3 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 11, History is the telling of past events. That certain events happened is usually, though not always, not in question*. The oral or written accounts of the events, i.e. history are highly subjective and subject to the biases of the historian and the vagaries of his or her culture. I bring this up, of course, because of the significance of this 9/11 anniversary. That the attacks happened ten years ago is beyond doubt. Most of us know that they were the action of a (relatively) small fanatical faction within the Islamic community. But the telling of the event, the process of making it history, has already started. Some, whom most of us consider to be a fringe group, express the opinion that the attacks were part of a US government conspiracy to justify wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Others place blame on the whole Islamic world and hold a deep animosity to all who profess that faith. To be sure, relations between the West and the Islamic world have been marked with conflicts including, but not limited to, the initial expansion of Islam, the check of that expansion by Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours, the Crusades, the battles fought by El Cid (who, by the way, led armies on both sides), the expulsion of the Moors from Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella (yes, those of the Christopher Columbus story) and Suleiman the Magnificent who laid siege to Vienna. (The internet is great for looking up stuff.) As to the question of who was the aggressor and who the aggrieved, well, that depends on who is telling the story: the historian. We do well to recall, though, that when Europe forgot its learning and lost its culture, the socalled Dark Ages, it was the Muslim world that persevered much of what had been known; astronomy, history, mathematics (including algebra an Arabic word), medicine, and philosophy. The Muslim world preserved this knowledge, added to it (the concept of zero in math originated there) and presented it back to the West. Thomas Aquinas work was seen as suspect for a while because it was based on Aristotelian philosophy and that was considered Muslim Islamic scholars had preserved Greek thought. So, we observe the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. We must not and cannot try to lay blame on the Islamic community for the actions of the members of a radical minority. We remember our dead, we console their families, and we pray for peace. If we care to work at it, we might even pray for our enemies: it would be the Christian thing to do. Peace now and always, *The Trojan War comes to mind. For a while it was considered by some as a folk tale of the ancient Greeks told in the llliad and retold in the Aenead. Then the archaeologists found ruins from the right time and at the right place with evidence of destruction caused by war. Even though no Welcome to Troy sign was found, it s pretty well conceded that Troy has been found. Still, the stories are history and are therefore an interpretation and enhancement of the event. Our personal tour - pointing out all the highlights of the Basilica - begins at 10 am. We will be leaving from the OLB parking lot at 9:15 am sharp and carpool to the Basilica which is located at 6280 N Sauganash Avenue in Chicago. Following our tour we will stop for lunch at the ORIGI- NAL Lou Malnati's Restaurant on Lincoln Avenue (a few blocks away from the Basilica). Each person is responsible for their own lunch tab. 5 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 11, Bulletin Building Blocks - 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time FEAST OF FAITH Offering and Intercessions In this holy moment with the consecrated bread and wine, the Body and Blood of Christ, upon the altar we pray for a share in the fruits of Christ s sacrifice. We offer to God what God has given to us, and we intercede for the Church and the world. We pray for the pope and for all the bishops, and we mention the bishop of our local church by name. We pray for the clergy and for all the people of God. We pray in a special way for those who have died. And we pray for ourselves, that one day, with Mary and all the saints, we may come to that place where Jesus already reigns. These prayers of intercession, like the General Intercessions earlier in the Mass, broaden our focus and remind us that the Eucharist is offered not just for those gathered, but for the salvation of the entire world. The Eucharistic Prayer leads us from an intense focus on Christ, present in the consecrated host in the hands of the priest, to a loving sweep of prayer that embraces the world. On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of the Roman Missal. Many have wondered why the Church is implementing a new translation of the prayers of the Mass at this time. When you really think about it, it makes all the sense in the world that the Church is implementing a new translation that is more faithful to the original Latin because the Mass is the very core of Catholic life. The prayers of the Mass express our Catholic beliefs and the more clearly we can express those beliefs, the more our faith can grow and be nourished. Many Church leaders, most prominently the late Blessed Pope John Paul II, felt that many of the current translations of the Latin were done hastily after the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, when the Church throughout the world began praying the Mass in the languages of the people rather than in Latin. The new translation that we will be using has taken nearly a decade to produce and, as Pope John Paul II desired, is closer to the original Latin. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago With summer coming to an end, it is time to look to a new season of adult faith formation. This year we will not start our Thursday morning and evening sessions until October due in part to scheduling our speaker, and, of course, Shir Hadash celebrating Rosh Hashanah, 9/ World Religions Judaism & Islam with Guest Speaker: Jerry Leitner Our 2011 Fall offering (beginning October 13) on Thursday mornings at 9:15 and again in the evening at 7:00PM is going to continue along the lines Fr. Tom started with The Birth of Monotheism in 2009 and last year s video A History of God. See the last two years posters in the Social Area!! This year we are going to have a guest speaker, Jerry Leitner, who will be speaking to us on World Religions beginning with a presentation on How to Talk about Religion and then two sessions each on Judaism and Islam for a total of five sessions beginning October 13 and ending November 10. Vicariate II Adult Confirmation Are you Confirmed? We have been invited again to be one of the two host parishes for our Vicariate s Adult Confirmation program. We will be hosting these on Tuesday evening at 7:00PM beginning September 13 and running through November 15 with the Sacrament of Confirmation being celebrated by Bishop Kane at St. Clement s on Tuesday, 11/29. If you have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation this is an excellent opportunity to prepare with your fellow adults. Women s Day of Reflection Saturday, October 22, with Sr. Kathy Sherman We have set a date for another Day of Reflection for the women of our parish: Saturday, October 22 to be held at Techny with guest speaker Sr. Kathy Sherman. Our theme will be Finding the Nearness and Mystery of God Through Prayer and Music. Mark your calendars now and watch for the registration. St. Vincent de Paul Chicago Hosting Friends of the Poor Walk The volunteers at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul traveled more than 135,000 miles in 2010 to help the needy. Now, SVdP is seeking the support of the community for its biggest fundraiser The Friends of the Poor Walk. The Friends of the Poor Walk take place at two locations on two separate days in September. The first walk takes place on Sept 24, 2011 from 8 a.m. to noon at Lake Katherine, 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive, Palos Heights. The second walk takes place on Sept 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at DePaul University, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave., Chicago. The funds raised through the Friends of the Poor Walk stay in the local community to assist with programs and services for the poor and underprivileged, said Frieda Bertello, executive director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago. Some of the needy individuals we serve walk several miles to receive help. There is strength in numbers, and we want to show our neighbors in need that we are here to help. Participants have the choice to walk at a north or south location, and the option to select the conference and/or council to represent. 7 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 11, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 9:30 AM Mass September through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. Children then rejoin their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each session consists of a sharing of the scriptures in a children s format, or conversation, and activity in response. Each Sunday the children will have a take home to share with their families. Food Pantry Running on Empty By Karie Angell Luc, suntimes.com Mary Lou Kratochwill oversees pantry inventory at the Northfield Township food pantry. This is the time of the year when the food pantry is the lowest says Kratochwill, August is typically when stock runs low. We re up to 600 families now using the pantry. There are a lot of people who have been using the food pantry this summer. Thankfully, donations of fresh fruit and vegetables have held steady. Fresh produce is available said Kratochwill, The Northbrook Farmers Market donates all its leftover produce on Wednesdays and the Northfield Farmers Market donates their leftovers on Saturdays, along with the Northbrook Community Garden and many other sources. Desperately needed items at the pantry include: Peanut butter, Pancake Mix & Syrup, Tuna, family-sized Soups, Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Cereal. Paper towels and toilet paper are staples. Extras might include allergy friendly goodies such as Oreo cookies or Goldfish, Gatorade, Cheez-It crackers or Handi-Snacks.
