In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. 3 Dear Parishioners, By now, many of you know that Bishop DiMarzio has stated that the Precious Blood will not be offered to the faithful until the flu season is over. He also asks that we refrain from shaking hands at the sign of peace and that hand sanitizers be available for the celebrant and the extraordinary ministers of holy communion. We are in compliance at O.L.A. Catholic Schools Week opens today at the 10:30am mass. We welcome our parishioner, Mr. Michael Long, the Board Chair of Holy Angels Academy, the Vice-Chair Mrs. Eileen McCarthy, the members of the Board, Mrs. Rosemarie McGoldrick the principal, and members of the faculty as well as the parents and students. All of the above play different roles and contribute to the functioning of the Academy. If you know of any child who would flourish in a Catholic School just advise his/her parents to enquire at Holy Angels or at another Catholic academy. Catholic schools have proven to be the primary form of faith formation for decades in our country. Financial assistance is available and is granted according to diocesan guidelines. 5 ARISE - Together in Christ We invite everyone, men and women, to come to the Arise program. For 6 weeks starting the week of February 11, 2018, you will walk with the Scriptures, hearing the message of Jesus. Meetings are once a week for 6 weeks, 90 minutes each session, in the parish facilities. Sign up weekend is February 3rd and 4th, after each mass, in the main vestibule.
