This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ s life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul s fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord s Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 3 Dear Parishioners, Today at all the masses, I will be soliciting your commitment and generosity to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Although there have been different names for the Appeal going back to 1977, when Bishop Mugavero instituted the first one, the purpose has always been the same: the diocese s ability to maintain essential services for the life of the local church. Each year that I had the privilege to serve as your pastor, I am edified by your willingness to sacrifice and I am confident that this year will be no different from previous Appeals. The month of May will open on Tuesday and it usually means warmer weather, blooming trees and flowers. It also is the traditional month to think of our Blessed Mother and her maternal role in the life of the Church in general and in the life of all of us, her children in the particular or individual sense. Here at OLA, we have a group of people who pray the rosary after the 8:30am mass in church and after the 11:45am mass in the chapel on a daily basis. Now that the weather will be nicer, why not come out to daily mass and honor Mary? If this is not possible, why not say a decade or two of the rosary on your way to or from your errands on the avenue? At this writing, Father Lewk is a patient for physical therapy in Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan. Father should be able to walk down the aisle on June 3, at the 12:00pm mass when he will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood. Save the date for the mass and parish reception following the mass. Let s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Una Reflexión Para Nuestro Tiempo No somos cristianos que vivimos por nuestra cuenta. Somos cristianos que vivimos, en la medida en la que estamos unidos a Jesús. La Iglesia es como un gran viñedo. En ella hay muchas vides. En ella hay muchos sarmientos. Pero el fruto es el mismo, los racimos. Los racimos producen el vino que alegra nuestras mesas. La imagen de Jesús - vid y cristianos - sarmientos nos ofrece una bella imagen de la Iglesia. No hay Iglesia sin la cepa que es Jesús. No hay Iglesia sin los racimos que somos cada uno de nosotros. La Iglesia es una comunión de vida. En la Iglesia todos vivimos la misma vida. Y todos estamos llamados a producir los mismos racimos. Y todos estamos llamados a producir ese mismo vino en el lagar del corazón de Dios, alegría y esperanza de los hombres.
