Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. 3 Dear Parishioners, On Tuesday, many people will celebrate Halloween. For many, this day means ghosts, witches, skeletons, and scary things. However, we know that its original meaning was about the eve of All Hallows (the name of a Catholic boys High School in the Bronx) which is old English for All Saints. I m not sure how the macabre took over the feast but it really is about the universal call to holiness that we all share due to baptism. It is also a feast of encouragement. All the holy men and women who are in heaven intercede for us and await the day when we join them. Wednesday, the Solemnity of All Saints is a holyday of obligation and the masses will be: Tuesday Wednesday 7:00 pm 6:45 am 8:30 am 11:45 am 7:00 pm (Spanish) Thursday will be the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, better known as All Souls Day. The universal Church prays for all those souls in purgatory, a state of being purified before entrance into heaven. The mass schedule will be: Thursday 6:45 am 8:30 am 11:45 am 6:00 pm (English) 7:00 pm (Spanish) Next Sunday, November 5th, we turn our clocks back one hour. It will also be Marathon Sunday. CATHOLICS CARE DeSales Media Group, the communications arm of the Diocese of Brooklyn, is seeking volunteers for a mission trip to Houston, Texas to help hurricane victims.
