Pope Francis described ques ons of this kind, about what you can or can t do, as casuis c. He explained: Not the great yes or no, with which we are familiar. This is God. Instead, the Pharisees reduce the Chris an life, the way of following God, to a ques on of yes, you can, or no, you can t. The ques on posed by the Pharisees concerned marriage; they wanted to know if it was lawful for a husband to divorce his wife. But, said Pope Francis, Jesus goes beyond the simple ques on of lawfulness, going back to the the beginning. Jesus speaks about marriage as it is in itself, perhaps the greatest thing created by God in those seven days of Crea on. From the beginning of crea on, God made them male and female. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Jesus words in the Gospel are very strong, the Pope said. He speaks of one flesh which cannot be divided. Jesus lays aside the problem of separa on, and goes to the beauty of the couple, who ought to be one. We must not focus, like these doctors do, on the answer Yes, you can divide a marriage, or No, you can t. At mes there is misfortune, when it doesn't work, and it is be er to separate in order to avoid a world war. But this is a misfortune. Let us go and look at the posi ve. Pope Francis told of how he met a couple who were celebra ng 60 years of marriage. He said he asked them, Are you happy? They looked at one another, and with tears in their eyes, answered, We are in love! It s true that there are difficul es, there are problems with children or with the couple themselves, arguments and fights but the important thing is that the flesh remains one, and you can overcome, you can overcome, you can overcome. And this is not only a sacrament for them, but also for the Church, a sacrament, as it were, that a racts a en on: See, love is possible! And love is capable of allowing you to live your whole life in love : in joy and in sorrow, with the problems of children, and their own problems but always going forward. In sickness and in health, but always going forward. This is beau ful. 2

5 Parish Life Epiphany Catholic School Our Stewardship Stewardship June 2/3 YOUNG ADULT BIBLE STUDY Bible Study will be Wednesday, June 13th, at 8pm, in Room 404 of the PAC Building. We are reading and reflecting on How to be Happy from the book of Matthew. On Friday, June 15th, we will have dinner at Chili s off of South Mason Road and the Katy Freeway at 6:30pm. This will be followed by an activity. THE GATHERING PLACE As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10 The Gathering Place provides social time for persons with Alzheimer s, Dementia, and Parkinson s. Our next event will be on Thursday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We are in need of help during the summer months! Volunteers work 9:30am - 2:00pm the second Thursday of the month. EPIPHANY JOB NETWORK At a loss where to start your job search? Been unemployed for many months? Re-entering the work force after a few years? Want to change companies or industries? Then it s time to join our networking group. Experienced facilitators are available to help. We meet Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Parish Activity Center. Clinic Care Kits We need travel personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, and family size toiletries donated. Please deliver them to the outreach center or leave in the collection box by the Church office. We will be putting the kits together in July. Baby Bottles due back next weekend Keep filling those Baby Bottles with money and return them on Father s Day weekend to help those affected by an unplanned pregnancy. 6

7 Adult Faith Formation Biblical Studies Summer 2018 Advanced Biblical Studies is open to adults who have completed the Archdiocesan introductory Scripture courses or their equivalent. These ten-hour courses are designed to focus on either individual books or small collections of related books of the Bible in an intensive and focused way. They are taught by instructors who have a specialty in Sacred Scripture. Two courses are offered this summer at St. Dominic Center, 2403 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Prophets of the Persian Period Saturdays, August 4 & 11, 9:00-3:00 The Book of Psalms Saturdays, August 18 & 25, 9:00-3:00 (Lunch break on your own: 12pm - 1pm) Contact the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis at for additional information. Adult Faith Formation To Go! The National Catholic Bible Conference was held at St. John Vianney in Houston in May, CD s from the speakers presentations are available for check-out at our Reception Desk. Listen to nationally recognized speakers such as Jeff Cavins, Fr. Mike Schmitz, and Dr. Edward Sri as they inspire you to live out your calling as a witness to God s unfailing love for every person in your life. Audio CD s are available for one-week checkout at no cost - only one CD at a time please! Great to listen to while driving! The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view. 8 Elementary Faith Formation Epiphany Youth Ministry Just 1 more week until we get Shipwrecked! An important orientation/work day for all volunteers is scheduled for this Wednesday, June 13th. We ll begin with mass at 9am and then move to the Family Center. We will end at noon. Our last Jeremiah 1:7 training will be held from 1-3pm that afternoon. This is the training for all high school students under the age of 18. Faith Formation registration forms have been mailed out. If you did not receive one, please stop by the parish office to pick one up. There are several pages of information that covers everything for Kindergarten students through 12 grade, including sacrament preparations. Take a quick look through everything and disregard items that don t pertain to your family s situation. June 30th is the deadline to register without incurring a late fee. It s never too early to think about teaching a class. We d love to share with you more about how to volunteer. Just call LouAnn, Dave, or Charlotte in the Faith Formation office.
