Moses says to the people: You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you lest you forget the Lord your God, who fed you in the wilderness with manna (Dt 8:2, 14, 16). Jesus will tell us: Do this in memory of me (1 Cor 11:24). The living bread, come down from heaven (Jn 6:51) is the sacrament of memory, reminding us, in a real and tangible way, of the story of God s love for us. Today, to each of us, the word of God says, Remember! Remembrance of the Lord s deeds guided and strengthened his people s journey through the desert; remembering all that the Lord has done for us is the founda on of our own personal history of salva on. Remembrance is essen al for faith, as water is for a plant. A plant without water cannot stay alive and bear fruit. Nor can faith, unless it drinks deeply of the memory of all that the Lord has done for us. Remember. Memory is important, because it allows us to dwell in love, to be mindful, never forge ng who it is who loves us and whom we are called to love in return. Yet nowadays, this singular ability that the Lord has given us is considerably weakened. Amid so much fran c ac vity, many people and events seem to pass in a whirl. We quickly turn the page, looking for novelty while unable to retain memories. Leaving our memories behind and living only for the moment, we risk remaining ever on the surface of things, constantly in flux, without going deeper, without the broader vision that reminds us who we are and where we are going. In this way, our life grows fragmented, and dulled within. Yet today s Solemnity reminds us that in our fragmented lives, the Lord comes to meet us with a loving fragility, which is the Eucharist. In the Bread of Life, the Lord comes to us, making himself a humble meal that lovingly heals our memory, wounded by life s fran c pace of life. The Eucharist is the memorial of God s love. There, Christ s sufferings are remembered and we recall God s love for us, which gives us strength and support on our journey. This is why the Eucharis c commemora on does us so much good: it is not an abstract, cold and superficial memory, but a living remembrance that comforts us with God s love. The Eucharist is flavored with Jesus words and deeds, the taste of his Passion, the fragrance of his Spirit. When we receive it, our hearts are overcome with the certainty of Jesus love. In saying this, I think in par cular of you boys and girls, who recently received First Holy Communion, and are here today in great numbers. The Eucharist gives us a grateful memory, because it makes us see that we are the Father s children, whom he loves and nourishes. It gives us a free memory, because Jesus love and forgiveness heal the wounds of the past, soothe our remembrance of wrongs experienced and inflicted. It gives us a pa ent memory, because amid all our troubles we know that the Spirit of Jesus remains in us. The Eucharist encourages us: even on the roughest road, we are not alone; the Lord does not forget us and whenever we turn to him, he restores us with his love. 2

The Sacrament of Anointing is for the strengthening of those who are ill, or who are aging. We celebrate the sacrament best in the community setting so that we can support you with prayer. 5 Parish Life Corpus Chris When we receive communion and hear the words, The Body of Christ, we receive, we accept Jesus true blood and flesh. But what about His other body? Have we accepted the body of Christ, the parish community around us these people with their weaknesses, their sins, their differences? Will we accept this body and heal it, feed it, care for it and cherish it? When you accept Him, can you accept this body of Christ too? He offers us the chance to drink from His cup. In the Eucharist, we meet Christ personally and, if we listen to Him, we know what drinking from His cup means our own sacrifice giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do His work on earth. 9 Biblical Studies Summer 2018 Adult Faith Formation Advanced Biblical Studies is open to adults who have completed the Archdiocesan introductory Scripture courses or their equivalent. These ten-hour courses are designed to focus on either individual books or small collections of related books of the Bible in an intensive and focused way. They are taught by instructors who have a specialty in Sacred Scripture. Two courses are offered this summer at St. Dominic Center, 2403 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Prophets of the Persian Period Saturdays, August 4 & 11, 9:00-3:00 The Book of Psalms Saturdays, August 18 & 25, 9:00-3:00 (Lunch break on your own: 12pm - 1pm) Contact the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis at for additional information. How Does Faith Grow? Adults from all faith traditions, or no religious background at all, are welcome to join the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our Catholic Faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare adults to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. 10 Elementary Faith Formation Epiphany Youth Ministry Epiphany VBS needs your help. We are looking for donations for the following items: White or Blue Icicle lights LED (with twinkling) x3; Fake plastic "island" plants (tropical / palms / etc.); 15 pieces of plastic fruit; 5 rolling pins; 5 plastic loaves of bread; Fun colored bendy straws (800); Swedish fish candy ("normal" kind); 10 bags Skittles candy ("normal" kind) 10 large bags; 500 clothespins; 10 large sponges; 20 pool noodles; 3 bags of 50 pound play sand; 85 leis; 20 non-bendable straws; 5 multi-colored foam sheets; ounce plastic cups; 100 large green paper plates; 600 bunch-a-balloons; 10 rolls of duct tape; Green paint (any shade or amount) - 10; Yellow paint (same as above); Brown paint (same) We will need all of these items by June 8. Please bring donations to the parish office. Faith Formation registrations have been mailed out. If you did not receive one, please stop by the parish office to pick one up. There are several pages of information that covers everything for Kindergarten students through grade 12, including sacrament preparations. Take a quick look through everything and disregard items that don t pertain to your family s situation. June 30th is the deadline to register without incurring a late fee. It s never too early to think about teaching a class. We d love to share with you more about how to volunteer. Just call LouAnn, Dave, or Charlotte in the Faith Formation office.
