Speaking to the crowds which nearly filled Saint Peter s Square on the hot July morning, the Pope focused on the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ or Corpus Christi celebrated in many parishes this past Sunday. The Gospel reading focuses on Christ s discourse on the Bread of Life which He delivered in the synagogue at Capernaum. Jesus stresses that he did not come into this world to give something, the Pope said, but to give himself, his life as nourishment for all those who have faith in Him. As disciples, the Holy Father said, we are obliged by our Communion with Christ to imitate Him, making our existence a broken bread for others, just as the Master has broken the bread that is truly His flesh. Pope Francis went on to say that each time we take part in Mass and are nourished by the Body of Christ, the presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit acts in us, shapes our heart, and speaks interiorly to us in a way that shapes our behavior according to the Gospel. The charity of Christ, welcomed with an open heart, changes us, transforms us, makes us able to love, not according to human measure [which is] always limited, but according to the measure of God, which is without limits. One cannot measure the Love of God, he said. In this way, we become able to love those who do not love us which, the Pope said, is not an easy thing to do and to confront evil with goodness, to forgive others, to share, and to welcome. By living in this way, the Holy Father said, we discover the true joy of giving back the great gift which we, without merit, first received ourselves. This is beautiful, he said: our life becomes a gift! This is an imitation of Jesus. There are two points that one must not forget, Pope Francis said: First, that the love of God is without measure, and secondly, that by following Jesus, we with the Eucharist make our life a gift. Pope Francis concluded by offering a prayer to Mary, in whom the Word was made Flesh, to help us rediscover the beauty of the Eucharist and make it the center of our lives. 2

Please Return Your Surveys as Soon as Possible (DROP-BOX AVAILABLE AT MASS) The questions contained in the survey deal with options concerning the renovation & expansion of our parish facilities. The surveys are your way of helping to shape the future of Epiphany of the Lord. All are asked to complete the survey and return it by the weekend of June 27 th & 28 th, Survey Weekend or to participate in an interview by June 26 th. If you have any questions regarding this important ministry or any of the requirements, please contact Deacon John Evanoff at SPONSOR COUPLES We are in need of Sponsor Couples to help prepare engaged couples for Christian marriage by inviting them into their (Sponsor Couple s) home for a series of five or six weekly meetings. This is not done by lectures, or by claiming that your own marriage is the model to be followed. Sponsor Couples share their experience of the good times and bad times of Christian marriage. The Sponsor Couple invites the engaged couple into the process of reflection and discussion, by which both the Sponsor and engaged couple grow to a better understanding of how to live and love as couples committed to Christian marriage. 9 Faith Formation Faith Formation Registration For the school year Registration for Faith Formation (FF) classes began on June 1 and continue through June 30. Late registration will begin on July 1 and will include a late fee of $10/family. If your child was enrolled in FF during the school year, a preprinted registration form was mailed to your home. If you are a new parishioner, or if your child is just beginning FF this year, contact our office to request a FF registration form: or religiousedu@epiphanycatholic.org. TEAMS of Our Lady An information meeting for Teams of Our Lady married couples group will be held on Sunday, (today) June 14 in Room 207 (nursery hallway) from 10:45 Noon (following the 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses). For information contact: philip_jena@att.net. Treasures from our Tradition A wedding celebrated in the Eastern Church has a form that was fixed a thousand years ago. In the West, our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world s structures tottered in the ninth century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride) after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed. Next the bed and all those present were sprinkled, too! That s a tradition that few Americans, either the betrothed or the clergy, are ready to revive! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. A Journey of Faith Awaits You I married a Catholic and promised to raise my children Catholic. Now that my children receive Eucharist they are asking me why I don t receive the Sacrament with them. I guess now is the time for me to ask myself this question and find out what I need to do to bring myself into a deeper relationship with God.
