Jesus tells us to ask our Father for bread each day. Nothing else: just bread, in other words, what is essential for life. Before all else, bread is what we need this day to be healthy and to do our work; tragically, so many of our brothers and sisters do not have it. Here I would say: Woe to those who speculate on bread! The basic food that people need for their daily lives must be accessible to everyone. To ask for our daily bread is also to say: Father, help me lead a simpler life. Life has become so complicated. Nowadays many people seem pumped up, rushing from dawn to dusk, between countless phone calls and texts, with no time to see other people s faces, full of stress from complicated and constantly changing problems. We need to choose a sober lifestyle, free of unnecessary hassles. One that goes against the tide. It would involve giving up all those things that fill our lives but empty our hearts. Let us choose the simplicity of bread and so rediscover the courage of silence and of prayer, the leaven of a truly human life. Let us choose people over things so that personal, not virtual, relationships may flourish. Let us learn once more to love the familiar smell of life all around us. When I was a child at home, if a piece of bread fell from the table, we were taught to pick it up and kiss it. Let us value the simple things of everyday life: not using them and throwing them away, but appreciating them and caring for them. Our daily bread, we must not forget, is Jesus himself. Without him, we can do nothing. He is our regular diet for healthy living. Sometimes, however, we treat Jesus as a side dish. Yet if he is not our daily bread, the center of our days, the very air we breathe, then everything else is meaningless. Each day, when we pray for our daily bread, let us ask the Father, and keep reminding ourselves: simplicity of life, care for what is all around us, Jesus in everything and before everything. 2

If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some alone time with God. Around the Archdiocese The 2018 Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass honoring couples celebrating their Silver (25th) Anniversary of marriage in the Catholic Church will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 3 pm. Whether or not a couple attends the ceremony, they are eligible to receive a special recognition. Registration will close on August 24, 2018 at midnight. Reserved seating will be limited. Should you arrive when the reserved space is taken, please sit anywhere else in the Church. Each couple will be able to bring a maximum of 6 family members or friends to the Mass. Couples that register after August 24th will not receive a prepared WAJ packet, or a signed recognition. The packet and recognition will be mailed to your home after verification of your sacramental marriage is confirmed. The 2018 Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass honoring couples celebrating their Golden (50th) Anniversary of marriage in The Catholic Church will be held on Sunday, October 21 st, 2018 at The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 3 pm. Whether or not a couple attends the ceremony, they are eligible to receive a special recognition. Registration for this celebration will be closed on September 30 th 2018 at midnight. Reserved seating will be limited for couples celebrating their anniversary, so please register soon to be able to reserve your space and also to make sure you will receive your acknowledgment on that day. Couples that register after September 30 th will not receive a prepared WAJ packet, or a signed recognition. Epiphany Parishioners, give yourselves a big pat on the back! As of July 10, we raised a total of $13,900. The Archdiocese Gabrielle Project, Catholic Charities Adolescent Pregnancy Program and the Pregnancy Help Center will receive 1/3 each, thanks to your generosity. Please feel good in knowing this will help save countless lives! We are still accepting bottles. FOOD DRIVE August 5th JOB FAIR AT EPIPHANY Thursday, July 26, :00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The event is FREE, there will be over 45 companies attending and they're ready to hire! Positions are in various fields, ranging from finance, healthcare, IT, retail, sales, and administrative, to name a few. This event is geared toward degreed, career-minded, professional job candidates. Candidates with no/ some college but substantial related work experience would also be well suited for this event. Ever notice how cranky kids (adults, too) get if they haven t eaten a meal on time? Those who may not know when they ll have their next meal feel even worse, in addition to being sick and/or unable to focus on schoolwork. Unbeknownst to many, there are several in the Katy area who could use help with meals. We can ease this burden by helping Boy Scout Troop collect items for our Food Closet, especially the following: Mac and Cheese, Pasta and Pasta Sauce. Also, we are in need of brown grocery paper bags. These can be brought to either parking lot after morning Masses. Place monetary donations in the Food Funds boxes located by the three openings to the church. Thank you for your assistance! 8

9 Adult Faith Formation INFANT BAPTISM PREPARATION A Baptism Preparation Session for parents and godparents will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon in the Family Center. Parents must attend a baptism preparation session before scheduling their child s baptism. Call to register for this preparation session. The next opportunity to attend a baptism class at Epiphany will be on Saturday, November 10, CATECHIST MODULES Gain confidence as a catechist and work toward Archdiocesan certification! Perhaps they experienced a Catholic Mass at the time of a wedding or funeral and were attracted and comforted by the prayer and ritual. Or, you may have witnessed the source of hope and comfort a Catholic relative, friend or co-worker found in their faith at a time of difficulty or crisis. Any one of these experiences - or a thousand more like them - might have started you thinking about what it would be like to become Catholic. VIRTUS: Protecting God s Children Saturday, August 25 1:00-4:00 p.m. Epiphany of the Lord Parish Activity Center (PAC). If you are over 18 and active in parish ministry or a parent volunteer for Epiphany Catholic School, you must be VIRTUS trained. All adult parishioners, ESPECIALLY PARENTS, are encouraged to be VIRTUS trained! Questions? Need assistance with the registration process? 10 Elementary Faith Formation Epiphany Youth Ministry Faith Formation registration is still open and we are accepting new and returning students. We ve heard from several families who have lost their materials. Please stop by the parish office and pick-up new materials. If you have questions, please contact anyone in the Faith Formation office. We are looking forward to a fantastic year. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help grow young disciples. You are never too old or even too young. Empty nesters and grandparents are some of our best volunteers. High school and college students bring a youthfulness that is infectious.
