A New Tabernacle for our Church I remember a number of parishioners commenting about how they enjoyed the improved landscaping in the front of the Church and along the walkway to the parking lots shortly after I first arrived. I believe that our campus as well as our Church is a wonderful place to spend time in prayer and ministry, a space that we should be grateful to Almighty God to have. I wanted to share with you another opportunity we have to add to the beauty and, more importantly, to the reverence of our worship space. This month, we are commencing a special endeavor to commission a new tabernacle for the Church and relocate it into the sanctuary (up behind the altar). As you may know, the altar and the tabernacle are the focal points of a Church. The Church teaches that the tabernacle should be located in a place that fosters our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This belief in the Real Presence is deepened by our often and sustained silent adoration of the Lord before and after Mass. Every time we enter the worship space, we should genuflect (bend one knee to the ground) as a sign of reverence and adoration to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle. This is why it is so important that the tabernacle should be located in an especially worthy place in a church. The Church also teaches that the Most Blessed Sacrament should be reserved in a tabernacle that is truly noble, prominent, readily visible, beautifully decorated and suitable for prayer. The new tabernacle will be custom made. Because of the size of our congregational space, we need a tabernacle that is larger than the standard dimensions of a prefabricated one. With a custom tabernacle, we also get to design some features that will be unique to our parish identity. The door of a tabernacle usually has a relief of a scene from the Bible. Our new tabernacle will have a relief of the Epiphany, a scene of the Three Kings visitation to the Holy Family. We can also customize the size of the tabernacle so that it complements our worship space. It will be made of precious metal and plated in gold, all of which will add to its visibility, nobility and beauty. I hope that you would feel as blessed as I do to be able to contribute to the new tabernacle and the associated expenses of relocating it in the sanctuary. Epiphany has a tradition of raising funds for special furnishings for the Church. We did this for both our church and chapel organs a few years back. I think it would be equally if not more appropriate to do so on this occasion. It takes from three to four months to construct the tabernacle once the funds are raised. It is my prayer and hope that your and my participation in this praiseworthy endeavor will be a time of anticipatory grace and deepening of the faith of our parish community. 2

Parish Office Renovations Update As you may have taken notice, we have been renovating our parish office for the past few months. Phase Two of our renovation project began last week. It will entail updating our reception area, our faith formation staff offices and adding a few offices for our pastoral ministry team (those who coordinate our funeral preparation and homebound ministry) as well as offices for those who oversee our weddings and Quinceañera celebrations. This past week, we moved into Phase Two of our renovation project. We moved out of the front portion of our office area (which included our receptionist waiting area). For the months of October and November, our parish office entrance will be located further back in the building (on the west end). The temporary entrance and receptionist area is located through the gates adjacent to the Child s Play entrance. There will be signs to direct you to the new area. If you have to meet with a priest, the faith formation staff or administration staff, this will be the entrance to arrive at. Our Youth Ministers will continue to be in the offices in the Family Center, and the Deacons temporary office will remain in the Outreach Building until the completion of renovations in November. As before, we apologize for any significant inconvenience and thank you for your kind understanding during this endeavor. As another friendly notice, the new library that has been relocated to the PAC building, upstairs next to the Epiphany Room will serve as a quiet reading room for anyone waiting to attend meetings on campus in the evenings or for parents or relatives waiting to pick a child up from Faith Formation. News in the Parish Eucharistic Minister Training We will be having a training session for anyone who is interested in serving as Eucharistic Minister on Friday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the church. In order to be trained as a Eucharistic Minister you need to meet specific requirements for this ministry. You must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, be an active, registered member of the parish, and if you are married, your marriage must be valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church. You must pre-register for this training. Please contact Gerry in the parish office to register or her at Gerry@epiphanycatholic.org Faithful Citizenship ~ Election Voting In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. This obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere feeling about what we should or should not do. Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil. Conscience always requires serious attempts to make sound moral judgments based on the truths of our faith. Next Tuesday, November 4, 2014, the national and local elections will be held. We urge all parishioners to exercise their right and responsibility to vote. You are invited to review the full text of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop s document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which could be downloaded at usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/ upload/forming-consciences-for-faithfulcitizenship.pdf 5
