Psalm O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading John envisions the holy city, the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23) or Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20. Gospel The oly Spirit, sent by the Father in Jesus name, will teach us everything (John 14:23-29) or John 17: The Call to Worship is With a Voice of Singing by Martin Shaw ( ), who studied with the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford and was associated with the stage work of Isadora Duncan before becoming organist of the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London. The Offertory is by Stanley Vann, born in Its text is from an ancient Celtic prayer: God to enfold me, God to surround me, God in my speaking, God in my thinking, God in my sleeping, God in my waking, God in my watching, God in my hoping. God in my life, God in my lips, God in my soul, God in my heart, God in my suf icing, God in my slumber, God in my everliving soul, God in my eternity. Sylvia Maddox, of the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, writes about this prayer in her book Praying With The Celtic Saints: "It was in a time of struggle and imbalance that a friend offered me a small book of Celtic prayers and praises. There was something in the rhythm of these prayers that reminded me of the rhythm of life. They contain an awareness of God s presence from the rising to the setting of the sun. Entwined with the reality of living, each action of the day becomes the essence of prayer." The Communion at 7:30 and 9 begins with a motet by the Elizabethan master Thomas Tallis ( ) who was a Gentleman (singer) of the Chapel Royal and enjoyed, along with William Byrd, a monopoly of printing music and music paper during Elizabeth I's reign. The text appears in the John s Gospel at verse 8, (following Jesus words, I am the way, the truth and the life), when Phillip asks to be shown the Father, and Jesus replies: If ye love me, keep my commandments and I will pray the father to give you another comforter (the oly Spirit), that he may abide with you forever, even the spirit of truth. The second piece is In pace, in idipsum dormiam et requiescat by the Elizabethan composer John Sheppard ( ), one of the inest English church composers of the Tudor era. In 1554 he applied, apparently unsuccessfully, for the degree of Doctor of Music at Oxford University, stating that he had studied music for 20 years and had composed many songs. e had worked at Magdalen College, Oxford, and by 1552 he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. is will was made on 1 December 1558 and he was buried on 21 December, but was invited to the coronation of Elizabeth I on 15 January 1559, evidently in ignorance of his death. The text of this piece is: In true peace shall I sleep and rest. If I give slumber to my eyes and to my eyelids drowsiness, I shall sleep and rest. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the oly Spirit. The Communion qt 10:30 begins with the Tallis If Ye Love Me (above) and continues with Peace I Leave With You by Walter Pelz (b1926), a nationally known American composer, arranger and organist who studied with the German organist and scholar einrich Fleischer. From 1969 to 1989 he was a full-time professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. The text is Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity May 1, 2016 Dear Parishioners: As we began our search for the next Principal of The Nativity School, we prayed that God would send us someone who is called to this ministry, taking up where Mrs. everon left off and leading us to where the Lord wants us to be in the future. We have truly felt the Lord s presence over these past few months as we conducted our extensive selection process. From a nationwide search we received 16 applications for the position, narrowing down the pool to the top ive candidates. One candidate continued to resonate strongly throughout the process as an excellent match to our learning community. It is now with great pleasure that I announce that this candidate, Mr. Paul Parker, has been appointed Principal of The Nativity School, effective July 1, Mr. Parker brings strong leadership skills, 22 years of experience in the Catholic education environment, and a great sense of delivering the Church s vision of education with clarity and precision. Driven by a philosophy of empowering Catholic educators and institutions, he worked most recently as ead of School at Pinecrest Academy, a private Catholic school in Cumming, Georgia. Mr. Parker was responsible for day-to-day operations of this K-12 school of 820 students and 85 full-time faculty. e was also the Director of Curriculum for the National Consultants for Education, where he was responsible for overseeing curriculum and curriculum development for a national system of schools. Prior to Pinecrest Academy, Mr. Parker spent 14 years as the ead of School and founding Principal of Canyon eights Academy, a private Catholic school in San Jose, California. ere he successfully developed the school to educational distinction, inancial sustainability and achieved recognition as one of the top Catholic schools in the Silicon Valley. Under his leadership, the school grew from the founding 6 to nearly 250 students, winning local recognition as the Best Preschool, Best Elementary School and Best Middle School for many years. Mr. Parker and his wife Stephanie have three sons and a daughter; their two older sons are in college, attending the University of Georgia and the American University; their younger son and daughter hope to attend Cathedral igh School. Mr. Parker and his family will be relocating to the San Diego area in June as he takes his new position at The Nativity School. You will have an opportunity to meet Mr. Parker at our Town all meeting on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:00pm in the oly Family Activity Center. Margaret everon has been an outstanding leader for our school, building such a positive and effective learning community. I want to take this opportunity to thank her yet again for her commitment to students, staff and families for the past 20 years. I appreciate all of your prayers during this transition time and look forward to you joining me in welcoming the Parker family with the graciousness and warmth that make The Nativity School and the Church of the Nativity the vibrant praying, learning and caring community that we are. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org) New Principal of The Nativity School: Mr. Paul Parker
