Psalm The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading You are the temple of God, and holy (1 Corinthians 3:16-23). Gospel Offer no resistance; love your enemies (Matthew 5:38-48). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. The Call to Worship is taken from a larger anthem of the same title by Henry Purcell ( ): Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again, I say, rejoice! The Offertory is by the Elizabethan composer Richard Farrant (ca ), a composer of English church music who became a Gentleman, or singer, at the Chapel Royal in the reign of Edward VI, but resigned his post in 1564 on being appointed master of the children's choir of St. George's Chapel, Windsor. The text is: Lord, for thy tender mercy's sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives. To decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee, now and evermore. Amen. The Communion begins with a motet by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria who was born at Avila, in old Castile in In 1564 he went to Italy to join the monastery founded by St. Ignatius Loyola as part of the struggle against Lutheranism, and was ordained 11 years later. He returned to Spain in 1586 in the service of Empress Maria, who was entering the Order of the Barefoot Nuns in Madrid, where he remained until the end of his life, performing several roles at the convent - priest, composer, music director, and organist. Considered one of the most significant composers of the late Renaissance, he devoted himself exclusively to the genre before his death in Madrid in The text is: Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Have mercy on me, for I am weak; heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed. The second piece at 7:30 and the third at 9 is by Richard Lloyd, born The text is by Christopher Wordsworth ( ) nephew of the poet William Wordsworth, of wandering lonely as a cloud fame: Love is kind and suffers long, love is meek and thinks no wrong, love than death itself more strong; therefore, give us love. Faith will vanish into sight, hope be emptied in delight, Love in heaven will shine more bright, therefore give us love. Faith and hope and love we see, joining hand in hand agree, but the greatest of the three, and the best, is love. The second piece at 9 and 10:30 is by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), the final chorus from his Cantata No. 207 written for the installation of Gottleib Kortte as Professor of Jurisprudence at Leipzig University in Bach, like many of his contemporaries, had no trouble plagiarizing his own work, and the piece was recycled as an homage to the Elector (Duke) of Saxony on his birthday. The text is: Praise the Lord, O praise the Lord most holy, praise him for his goodness. Glory to the Lord our King, glory to his everlasting name. Let all earth be glad, rejoicing in his holy name. Bach may have covered both heavenly and earthly bases in praising not only God, but also his patron, the Duke, both of whom would have been addressed as "Herr" in German. The third piece at 10:30 is Rene Clausen's setting of the text Set Me as a Seal Upon Thine Heart from the Song of Songs, containing the memorable line for love is strong as death.

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity February 19, 2017 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:2b Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: : Ü 4 H The G H G H G H G Lord is kind and mer - ci - ful. DIVINE WISDOM The Lord s message, through Moses, was to take no revenge and cherish no grudge... love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, Great in theory, but not always realistic! Then Jesus in today s Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the real world. Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Time, Talent and Treasure Registered Households: 1,227 Contributing Parishioners in 2016: 803 Our Parishioners contributed $15, in the weekly collection to further the Mission & Ministry provided by the Church of the Nativity. Thank you for giving what is meaningful to you, to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. Annual Catholic Appeal 2017 Our Parish Assessment: $115,000 Inspired by Pope Francis Post-Synodal Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, the theme of the Diocese of San Diego s 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal is The Joy of Love. Do you often find yourself without your checkbook or envelope on Sunday morning? Faith Direct is secure and convenient, and will even provide you with an optional offertory card to place in the basket during weekly collection. There is no cost to you, and the program provides a great benefit to our parish. Please consider using Faith Direct today! Sign up by visiting ( Our parish code is CA288. Call for more information. Inviting each of us to prayerfully consider making a sacrificial gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year, Bishop Robert McElroy explains that our participation accomplishes something simple but profound: it opens the door of faith for others and for ourselves. Because of your gift, someone will meet Jesus Christ, have the opportunity to experience His loving grace, know His Mercy and Love. Just imagine what good we could do if all 1,227 Church of the Nativity households contributed to the ACA!
