Psalm Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel Show us the Father, Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: Whoever sees me, sees the Father (John 14:1-12). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, All rights reserved. The Communion at 7:30 is by Josquin des Prez, born in the 1450's in France: ail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, serene Virgin. ail, whose conception, full of great jubilation, fills eaven and Earth with new joy. ail, whose birth brought us joy, as Lucifer, the morning star, went before the true sun. ail, pious humility, fruitful without a man, whose Annunciation brought us salvation. ail, true virginity, immaculate chastity, whose purification brought our cleansing. ail, glorious one in all angelic virtues, whose Assumption was our glorification. O Mother of God, remember me. Amen. The Call to Worship is by Noel Rawsthorne, born 1929: O Sing Unto the Lord: O sing unto the Lord a new song, let the congregation of saints praise him; let them praise his name in the dance, let them sing praises to him with tabret and harp. Let the saints be joyful in glory, O sing unto the Lord a new song. The Offertory is by Malcolm Archer: God be in my head, and in my understanding. God be in my eyes, and in my looking. God be in my mouth, and in my speaking; God be in my heart, and in my thinking; God be at my end, and at my departing. The Communion begins with an Adoramus te by Felice Anerio ( ): We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the World. The second piece is the famous Ave Maria credited to the French composer Charles Gounod ( ). Gounod, betrothed to Miss Anna Zimmermann, whose father was the general inspector of studies at the Imperial Conservatoire of Paris, often went to have dinner at a friend's place with his fiancée and her parents, before which he would wait for Miss Zimmerman in the living-room, and improvise on the piano. One day, his future father-in-law, a renowned pianist who was Bizet's teacher, heard Gounod improvising a tune which he accompanied with J.S. Bach's first Prelude in C Major, a melody which he considered charming. Gounod having played it a second time, Zimmermann hurried to write it down, then some days later, had Gounod listen to it played with a violin, and supported with a small choir. And so was born Consideration on Bach's Prelude which later became the famous Ave Maria, which Gounod never wrote, and did so much for his popularity. Zimmerman published it and handed back to Gounod a sum of two hundred francs for the purchase of the work, which went through several metamorphoses before becoming the version we know today. The composer Saint- Saëns said: The famous Bach prelude, these few bars to which I don't believe the author lent so much importance when he wrote them, made more for his glory than all that he'd written until then. The third piece is A Prayer for Mothers by Donna Butler, which begins: God bless the mother, who sings to her child, peaceful and calm, her words soft and mild. God bless the mother, awake in the night, rocking her child 'til morning light. Gather all mothers in tender embrace, Grant them your courage, your wisdom and grace, onor their place in your sacred design, of healing the world one child at a time.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity May 14, 2017 Pope Francis: Dear mothers: thank you! [On Mother s Day last year, while he was still the Bishop of Dallas, Texas, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, now the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life in Rome, published this article on the website of the Diocese of Dallas. Quoting from Pope Francis, Cardinal Farrell s article is a beautiful Thank You to all of our mothers, living and dead.] Nestled deep within Pope Francis marvelous Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of Love, is a paean to motherhood. I can think of no greater tribute to those who bore us and nurtured us in unconditional love, than these words of our oly Father. Dear mothers: thank you! Thank you for what you are in your family and for what you give to the Church and the world. A society without mothers would be dehumanized, for mothers are always, even in the worst of times, witnesses to tenderness, dedication and moral strength. Mothers often communicate the deepest meaning of religious practice in the first prayers and acts of devotion that their children learn. Without mothers, not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound warmth. A mother who watches over her child with tenderness and compassion helps him or her to grow in confidence and to experience that the world is a good and welcoming place. This helps the child to grow in self-esteem and, in turn, to develop a capacity for intimacy and empathy. Mothers are the strongest antidote to the spread of self-centered individualism. It is they who testify to the beauty of life. (Amoris Laetitia, ) May God bless our mothers and mothers-to-be with the wisdom, courage and faith needed to fulfill their preeminent role in shaping the future. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson, Pastor (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity May 14, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Easter I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: : ÜÜ Ü 4 4 G Lord, let your mer - cy be on G us, as we place our trust in F you. TE WAY Today we sense the apostles trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord s promise that he is going to his Father s house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God s wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Inviting each of us to prayerfully consider making a sacrificial gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year, Bishop Robert McElroy explains that our participation accomplishes something simple but profound: it opens the door of faith for others and for ourselves.
