We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. e must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The entrance following the courtyard rite is the processional hymn All Glory, Laud and onor. The verses were translated from the Latin hymn Gloria, laus et honor, written by Theodulf of Orléans, who became Bishop of Orléans under Charlemagne in 798, for Palm Sunday in 820. The German melody dates from the 17th century. The Offertory is Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? originally from the upper Cumberland region of Tennessee, this hymn was taken up by slaves in the South during the beginning of the Civil War. It was first published in Old Plantation ymns in The Communion begins with O Domine Jesu Christe by Francisco Guerrero ( ) who was appointed music director at Jaén Cathedral in Andalusia, the autonomous community in Southern Spain, at the age of 17. e later accepted a similar position in the capital, Seville. In 1589 he traveled to the oly Land, but coming home his ship was twice attacked by pirates, who threatened his life, stole his money, and held him for ransom. Back in Spain, a series of misfortunes led him to debtor's prison; at last his old employer at Seville Cathedral extricated him, and he resumed working there. is book on his adventurous vacation was published in 1590; he intended to return but unfortunately died in the plague of 1599 in Seville. The text is: Lord Jesus Christ, I worship you, who was wounded on the cross and given gall and vinegar to drink: I pray that your wounds may be a remedy for my soul. The second piece at 9 is a setting of a Passiontide text from Lamentations 1:12: O all you who pass along this way, attend and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow. This motet was composed by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria who was born at Avila, in old Castile in 1549, and is known to have gone to Rome around 1564, where he joined the monastery founded by St. Ignatius Loyola as part of the fight against Lutheranism. In 1575 he was ordained as a priest, but did not stay in Italy, returning to Spain in 1586 in the service of Empress Maria, who was entering the convent of Descalzas Reales in Madrid. Victoria remained at the convent until the end of his life, performing several roles - priest, composer, director of the choir, and organist. e is considered the most significant composer of the Counter-Reformation in Spain, and one of the most well-regarded composers of sacred music in the late Renaissance, a genre he devoted himself to exclusively before his death in Madrid in The second piece at 10:30 is a setting of the Passiontide hymn When I survey the wondrous cross, for the class of 1968 at Westminster Choir College, Princeton by Gilbert M. Martin. The text was written by Isaac Watts (author of the Christmas favorite Joy to the World ) in 1707 and set to the hymn tune we know in 1824: When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory Died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. The third piece is a Passiontide chorale with the text attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux in The melody was composed by ans Leo assler in 1601 and later harmonized by Johann Sebastian Bach: O sacred ead, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn. O kingly head, surrounded with mocking crown of thorn. The power of death comes o'er you, the glow of life decays. Yet angel hosts adore you, and tremble as they gaze.
3 Page Three Church of the Nativity March 25, 2018 oly Week and The Sacred Triduum The Easter Triduum Is the Apex of Our Christian Life Pope Francis has described the Easter Triduum (oly Thursday, Good Friday, oly Saturday and the Easter Vigil) as the apex of our liturgical year. It is also the apex of our lives as Christians. We begin the Triduum on oly Thursday by celebrating the Mass of the Lord s Supper, as we recall Christ s offering of is body and blood to the Father, which e gave to the Apostles as food for their nourishment, with the command that they perpetually celebrate these mysteries in is memory. We also recall the Lord washing the Apostles feet, through which e showed that the purpose of is life and passion was to serve God and neighbor, a service which we are called to imitate by loving one another as he loved us. This purpose is expressed also during our Baptism, when the Lord s grace cleansed us from sin and we put on the new self in the image of Christ (Col 3, 10). And it happens each time we partake in the Eucharist and enter into Communion with Christ to obey is commandment to love im as he loved us. If we take Communion without being sincerely ready to wash each other s feet we do not acknowledge the Lord s Body: Jesus service is to give of imself totally. On Good Friday we will meditate on the mystery of Christ s death and we will venerate the Cross. During the last instants of is life, before handing over the spirit, Jesus said it is finished (John 19, 30), meaning that Salvation has taken place; that with is sacrifice Jesus has transformed the greatest injustice into the greatest love. By is sacrifice sin has been overcome through love, an immense love which we are called to live and transmit. On oly Saturday we will contemplate Jesus lying in the tomb, and with Mary, the Church will keep alive the flame of faith, hoping against every hope in Christ s resurrection. Then, at the Easter Vigil, when the Alleluia resounds again, we will celebrate the Risen Christ, the center and fulfilment of the universe and history. Beginning with the Blessing of the Fire and the Lighting of the Paschal Candle, the Easter Vigil reminds us that Jesus Christ is the light that overcomes the darkness of selfishness and sin. The extended Liturgy of the Word recalls all that God the Father has done since the beginning of creation to prepare the world for salvation. Then the Blessing of Water reminds us that it is through the waters of Baptism that our sins are forgiven and that we will rise with Christ to new and everlasting life. Our Elect and Candidates will then receive the Easter Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist) and everyone in the congregation will be invited to renew their own Baptismal Promises, as together we thank the Father for all that is Son Jesus Christ has done to bring us is gifts of forgiveness and new life. As our Elect and Candidates receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, let us pray for them to our Father in heaven: Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson, Pastor (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)
