First Reading In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22) Second Reading Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel The account of Christ s passion according to Matthew (Matthew 26:14 27:66 [27:11-54]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, All rights reserved. Following the courtyard rite at 9 and 10:30, the processional hymn is All Glory, Laud and onor. The verses were translated by John Mason Neale from the Latin hymn Gloria, laus et honor, written by Theodulf of Orléans, who became the Bishop of Orléans under Charlemagne in 798, but was removed when Louis the Pious became the oly Roman Emperor in 818. During the subsequent power struggle he was placed under house arrest at a monastery in Angers, mostly due to Louis' suspicion that he had supported an Italian rival to the throne. During his detention, Theodulf wrote this hymn for Palm Sunday in 820. The melody dates from the 17th century. The Offertory is Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? Originally from the upper Cumberland region of Tennessee, this hymn was taken up by slaves in the South during the beginning of the Civil War. It was first published in Old Plantation ymns in The Communion begins with a motet by Orlando di Lasso ( ) also known as Orlandus Lassus, considered one of the great composers of the Flemish school. e was music director at the Lateran Basilica in Rome, and spent the last thirty-four years of his life in the service of Albert V in Munich. The text is: Blot out my iniquity, O Lord, have mercy on me, O Lord, according to thy great mercy. The second piece at 7:30 and 9 is Vexilla Regis by Anton Bruckner ( ). The original hymn was written by Venantius Fortunatus ( ) for a procession in honor of the arrival of a large relic of the True Cross which had been sent to Queen Radegund by the Emperor Justin II and his Empress Sophia. Queen Radegund, a Thuringian princess and Frankish queen, founded the Abbey of the oly Cross at Poitiers and was retiring to a convent she had built nearby. In celebration, the Queen asked Fortunatus to write a hymn for the procession of the relic to the church. The verse is usually translated as "The Royal Banners forward go..." but the meaning is closer to: The banners of the King advance, the cross glimmers mysteriously; life endured death upon it that life might be found. The second piece at 10:30 is a setting of the hymn When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, in an arrangement for the 1968 graduating class of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ by Gilbert M. Martin, a native of Southbridge, Mass. The original hymn tune by Lowell Mason appeared in 1824, and the text was written by Isaac Watts (author of the Christmas favorite Joy to the World) in 1707, beginning: When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory Died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. The third piece is a Passiontide chorale, with the text attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux in 1153 and the melody by ans Leo assler in 1601, harmonized by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ): O sacred ead, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn. O kingly head, surrounded with mocking crown of thorn. The power of death comes o'er you, the glow of life decays. Yet angel hosts adore you, and tremble as they gaze.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity April 9, 2017 oly Week and The Sacred Triduum The Easter Triduum Is the Apex of Our Christian Life Pope Francis has described the Easter Triduum (oly Thursday, Good Friday, oly Saturday and the Easter Vigil) as the apex of our liturgical year. It is also the apex of our lives as Christians. We begin the Triduum on oly Thursday by celebrating the Mass of the Lord s Supper, as we recall Christ s offering of is body and blood to the Father, which e gave to the Apostles as food for their nourishment, with the command that they perpetually celebrate these mysteries in is memory. We also recall the Lord washing the Apostles feet, through which e showed that the purpose of is life and passion was to serve God and neighbor, a service which we are called to imitate by loving one another as he loved us. This purpose is expressed also during our Baptism, when the Lord s grace cleansed us from sin and we put on the new self in the image of Christ (Col 3, 10). And it happens each time we partake in the Eucharist and enter into Communion with Christ to obey is commandment to love im as he loved us. If we take Communion without being sincerely ready to wash each other s feet we do not acknowledge the Lord s Body: Jesus service is to give of imself totally. On Good Friday we will meditate on the mystery of Christ s death and we will venerate the Cross. During the last instants of is life, before handing over the spirit, Jesus said it is finished (John 19, 30), meaning that Salvation has taken place; that with is sacrifice Jesus has transformed the greatest injustice into the greatest love. By is sacrifice sin has been overcome through love, an immense love which we are called to live and transmit. On oly Saturday we will contemplate Jesus lying in the tomb, and with Mary, the Church will keep alive the flame of faith, hoping against every hope in Christ s resurrection. Then, at the Easter Vigil, when the Alleluia resounds again, we will celebrate the Risen Christ, the center and fulfilment of the universe and history. Beginning with the Blessing of the Fire and the Lighting of the Paschal Candle, the Easter Vigil reminds us that Jesus Christ is the light that overcomes the darkness of selfishness and sin. The extended Liturgy of the Word recalls all that God the Father has done since the beginning of creation to prepare the world for salvation. Then the Blessing of Water reminds us that it is through the waters of Baptism that our sins are forgiven and that we will rise with Christ to new and everlasting life. Our Elect and Candidates will then receive the Easter Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist) and everyone in the congregation will be invited to renew their own Baptismal Promises, as together we thank the Father for all that is Son Jesus Christ has done to bring us is gifts of forgiveness and new life. As our Elect and Candidates receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, let us pray for them to our Father in heaven: Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson, Pastor (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)

About 6 million American adults have bipolar disorder. And, it s different than depression which affects nearly 15 million American adults.* Bipolar disorder and depression have many similarities. But they also have some key differences. It's important to know how to tell one from the other to get the right treatment. If you think you or a loved one might have bipolar disorder, it's important to raise your concerns with a mental health expert and work closely to arrive at the correct diagnosis. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition. Proper treatment is often a combination of counseling and medication. *source = National Alliance on Mental Illness (

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday God greatly exalted Christ and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. Philippians 2:9 Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: : Ü 4 My G God, my G God, G why have you a ban doned G me? SEEING CRIST CLEARLY We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul s letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. e is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us behold the Lamb of God before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we his Body through baptism, the church now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. Do you often find yourself without your checkbook or envelope on Sunday morning?
