Psalm - Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading - Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]). Gospel - Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Mass begins with a procession, in which the response Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned is repeated between verses of Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my complaint. If you, Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with you is forgiveness that you may be revered. I trust in the Lord, my soul trusts in his word. More than sentinels wait for the dawn, Let Israel wait for the Lord. For with the Lord is kindness, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all its sins. The Offertory is by Robert Fielding with text from Psalm 17: Keep me as the apple of an eye; hide me under the shadow of thy wings from the ungodly that trouble me. The Communion begins with the motet O Domine Jesu Christe by Gregor Aichinger ( ) who in 1584 became organist to the Fugger family of Augsburg, Bavaria, philanthropic merchants who became nobility under the oly Roman Empire. Later, Aichinger went for a two year visit to Rome for musical, rather than religious reasons, although he had taken holy orders before his appointment to the Fugger family. The text translates: Lord Jesus Christ, I worship you, who was wounded on the cross and given gall and vinegar to drink: I pray that your wounds may be a remedy for my soul. The second piece is Go Not Far From Me, O God by the Neapolitan composer Nicola Antonio Zingarelli ( ), known for his operas and sacred music. In 1811, while music director at St. Peter's in Rome, he refused to perform music in honor of Napoleon's infant son, who had been named King of Rome by his father. e was subsequently arrested and sent to Paris, where Napoleon freed him because of the popularity of his music. The piece begins: Go not far from me, O God; cast me not away in the time of age. Forsake me not when my strength faileth me. A brighter section continues: O let my mouth be filled with thy praise, that I may sing of thy glory and honor all the day long. The third piece is oly, oly oly from the German Mass by the Austrian master songwriter Franz Schubert ( ) who was completely overshadowed as a composer by the giant of his age, Beethoven. As a boy, Schubert sang in the choir of the Imperial Court Chapel in Vienna and studied though his college years with Antonio Salieri, Mozart's fictional nemesis. The German Masses are a form of (Tridentine) Low Mass approved by certain Catholic bishops in German-speaking countries. Before the Dialogue Mass that came into use in the 1940s, the Low Mass was said in a quiet voice by priest and servers, and was in most cases inaudible to the congregation. In the Austro-ungarian Empire and in the Catholic states of what is now Germany the custom arose of singing hymns in the vernacular throughout the Low Mass by the congregation or choir. The hymns were essentially texts that paraphrased the particular action of the Mass happening at that time. During the Kyrie (Lord have mercy), for instance, the congregation would sing a hymn asking God for mercy. This type of Mass was frequently used in small parishes that did not have the resources for a Solemn Mass or a igh Mass.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity March 5, 2017 The Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion Welcoming New Members into the Church This weekend, our Catechumens and Candidates in the RCIA Program will attend the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion with Bishop Robert McElroy at Golden all in San Diego. Please keep these men and women in your prayers during the Lenten Season as they begin their final preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. The Second Vatican Council restored the Catechumenate as the official way the Church prepares adults for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. As in the early Church, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a gradual process that involves the whole community of the faithful. Not only does the RCIA prepare individuals for entrance into the Church, it allows the members of the Church to renew their faith. This is especially true during Lent. During the course of the RCIA program, the individual follows a spiritual journey of steps accomplished through defined periods punctuated with formal rites. The first period is the Precatechumenate, when candidates inquire about the faith and receive evangelization. opefully, the person comes to that initial conversion and step of faith, aided by the grace of God. This period ends with the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens when the candidates publicly declare their intention to enter the Church. This Rite of Acceptance then begins the Period of the Catechumenate, during which the catechumens receive catechetical, ascetical and liturgical training. Catechetical instruction is of the utmost importance. This catechesis leads the catechumens not only to an appropriate acquaintance with dogmas and precepts but also to a profound sense of the mystery of salvation in which they desire to participate. The Rite of Election closes the Period of the Catechumenate. This rite is celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent. At this rite, upon the testimony of sponsors and catechists and the catechumens affirmation of their intention to join the Church, the Church makes its election of these catechumens to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. In the presence of the bishop, they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity. Now the catechumens are called the elect and they begin a Period of Purification and Enlightenment the final, intense preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation. On the next five Sundays of Lent, three scrutinies (rites for self-searching and repentance) and the presentations of the Creed and Lord s Prayer take place. This period concludes with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. After the Easter Vigil, the newly baptized and confirmed members of the Church (technically called neophytes ) enter the Period of Postbaptismal Catechesis or Mystagogy. The neophytes grow in their understanding of the mysteries of the faith and strengthen their bonding with the rest of the faithful. They should enter more fully into the life and unity of the Church. This period normally ends around Pentecost. The RCIA is a spiritually moving process beneficial to the whole parish community. As we draw closer to the celebration of Easter, let us pray in particular for those elect who will be entering our holy Catholic Church this Easter. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson, Pastor (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity March 5, 2017 Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: First Sunday of Lent The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve. Matthew 4:10 : Ú 44 Be mer - ci - ful O Lord, for we have G sinned. STRENGT AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God we want control, power, and answers to all of life s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Do you often find yourself without your checkbook or envelope on Sunday morning? Inviting each of us to prayerfully consider making a sacrificial gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year, Bishop Robert McElroy explains that our participation accomplishes something simple but profound: it opens the door of faith for others and for ourselves.
