Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading Paul explains God s call to him to preach to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19). Gospel Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow in the city of Nain (Luke 7:11-17). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, The Call to Worship is Awake, awake, ling off the night! For God has sent his glorious light; and we who live in Christ s new day must works of darkness put away. The Offertory is by Richard Lloyd (b. 1933), with text by Isaac Watts ( ) of Joy to the World fame: Come, dearest Lord, descend and dwell by faith in every breast; then shall we know and taste and feel the joys that cannot be expressed. Come, ill our hearts with inward strength, make our enlarged souls possess and learn the height and breadth and length of thine unmeasurable grace. Amen. The Communion at 7:30 and 9 begins with an Adoramus te by Orlando di Lasso ( ): We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, who by your holy cross has redeemed the world. e who suffered death for us, O Lord, O Lord, have mercy on us. The second piece is the motet Chantez a Dieu written in 1621 by the Dutch composer and organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck ( ). By 1580 he was organist at the famed Oude Kerk in Amsterdam; his duties there were probably to provide an hour of music twice daily in the church. e became famous for his brilliant improvisations at the organ and harpsichord, which gave him the informal title Orpheus of Amsterdam. This present piece demonstrates that he was also a skilled composer for voices. As a teacher, Sweelinck was in luential and sought after, and his pupils were among the most highly regarded musicians of the time. The text is from Psalm 96: Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; announce his salvation day after day. The third piece is one of the last works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ). In April of 1791, Leopold ofmann, music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, fell gravely ill. Mozart, who had never been an avid composer of religious music, saw an opportunity to enhance his income, and maneuvered to succeed him. Ironically, ofmann survived Mozart by two years. The Ave, verum corpus was composed in June, 1791, and dedicated to Mozart s friend, Anton Stoll, who was chorus master of the parish church in Baden. The setting is simple, and would have suited a reform-minded Austria where textual clarity and especially brevity were all-important in sacred music: ail true body: that was born of the Virgin Mary, that truly suffered and was sacri iced on the Cross for men, from whose pierced side lowed water and blood; be for us a foretaste of death and judgment. O sweet and gentle Jesus! Son of Mary. The Communion at 10:30 begins with the Lassus Adoramus te and continues with the Mozart Ave, verum corpus. The third piece is by the Restoration composer enry Purcell ( ), organist of Westminster Abbey: Thou knowest, Lord the secrets of our hearts. Shut not thy merciful ears unto our prayers, but spare us, Lord most holy, O God, most mighty. O holy and most merciful savior, thou most worthy judge eternal. Suffer us not at our last hour, for any pains of death to fall from thee.
3 Page Three Church of the Nativity June 5, 2016 Embracing the Joy of Love A Pastoral Message to the Diocese of San Diego Most Rev. Robert W. McElroy, Bishop of San Diego Last month, Pope Francis issued an authoritative teaching document on marriage and family life which he entitled The Joy of Love. Reflecting the consensus of bishops at two separate international Synods during the past two years, The Joy of Love seeks to invite dioceses throughout the world to enhance their promotion of marriage and family life, precisely because family lies at the heart of the Christian life in the world. In October of this year, I will convene a diocesan synod which focuses exclusively on the topics of marriage and family life that Pope Francis has raised in The Joy of Love. Each of our one hundred parishes will have a representative in the Synod. The majority of the representatives will be lay men and women, which is particularly important on this topic of marriage and family. There will be preparatory sessions during the coming months. The Synod in October will focus on five major challenges contained in The Joy of Love: Witnessing to the beauty and realism of the Catholic vision of marriage; The need to form a culture of invitation to unmarried couples; The nurturing of children; Ministry to those who have been divorced; and Bringing spiritual depth to family life in its various forms. It is my hope that our Synod will provide a moment of profound renewal and growth in our ecclesial support of the families in San Diego and Imperial Counties. And it is my hope that this Synod will be a genuine reflection of the Mercy and Compassion of God in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. In the final page of The Joy of Loving, Pope Francis offers a prayer to the oly Family which asks: oly Family of Nazareth Grant that our Families too May Be Places of Communion and Prayer Authentic Schools of the Gospel And Small Domestic Churches As the diocese of San Diego moves toward a Synod on the Family this October to culminate our celebration of this Year of Mercy, may we provide leadership in transforming our families ever more fully into authentic schools of the Gospel. May we identify new ways to witness to the beauty and realism of married life which is exclusive, permanent and fruitful. May we build a culture which lovingly invites and prepares men and women to accept ever more deeply in their lives a robust embrace of marriage in its fullness. May we build pathways to enhancing the spiritual depth of family life in San Diego and Imperial counties. And may we minister caringly, effectively and authentically to our brothers and sisters who have experienced divorce. oly Family of Nazareth, sustain us in this journey of faith and love. [For the full text of Bishop McElroy s Pastoral Message, please go to: Documents/Embracing_the_Joy_of_Love.pdf?ver= ] God bless you!

5 Page Four Church of the Nativity June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. - Psalm 30:12, 13 Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: : Üà I will praise you G Lord, for you have res - cued G me. OPE AND LIFE Today s readings tell the story of two widows. The irst reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
