Psalm Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and oly One of Israel (Isaiah 12:6). Second Reading Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! (Philippians 4:4-7). Gospel Whoever who has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. Whoever who has food should do likewise (Luke 3:10-18). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. The Call to Worship for this Gaudete Sunday is Rejoice in the Lord Alway, taken from the longer eponymous anthem by enry Purcell ( ), considered the finest and most original composer of his day, who despite his very short life was able to enjoy and make full use of the renewed flowering of music after the restoration of Charles II to the throne. As the son of a musician at Court, a chorister at the Chapel Royal, and the holder of continuing royal appointments until his death, Purcell worked in Westminster for three different kings over twenty-five years. In addition to his royal duties, he also devoted much of his talent to writing operas, or rather musical dramas, and incidental stage music. is best loved piece is the opera Dido and Aeneas, written for a girls' school in Chelsea. The writing of theatrical music seems not to have been regarded by Purcell as embarrassing or beneath his dignity as organist of Westminster Abbey, being in the very midst of a tradition that not only permitted but actually encouraged wellknown church musicians to provide lighter music for the theatre and opera, an accepted practice in the Continental cities as well as in London. The Offertory is by Christopher Tye, born probably in 1497 and died in 1572 or Once, when playing the organ at Queen Elizabeth I's chapel royal, he is said to have replied, when informed by her majesty that he was playing Little to delight the ear, that it was her ears that were out of tune. No record exists of a return engagement. The text is by the French academic Charles Coffin ( ) and reflects today s Gospel: O oly Spirit, Lord of grace, eternal source of love. Inflame, we pray, our inmost hearts with fire from heaven above. The Communion begins with The Best of Rooms by the American composer Randall Thompson, which takes as its text the poem Christ's Part (1647) by Robert errick: Christ, he requires still, wheresoe'er he comes, to feed, or lodge, to have the best of rooms. Give him the choice, grant him the nobler part of all the house; the best of all's the heart. The second piece is Zion hears the watchmen s voices, arranged from a chorus in the Cantata 140 by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), Wachet auf! (Sleepers, Wake! For night is flying). In this piece the choir sings the German chorale melody interwoven with one of Bach s most beloved themes as the text urges us to prepare the Coming of the Kingdom using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, of whom five fell asleep waiting for the bridegroom, and subsequently ran out of oil for their lamps, left to get more and were subsequently locked out of the wedding ceremony. Bach wrote over almost 300 cantatas for the liturgical year, compositions of fifteen or twenty minutes in length based on biblical themes, usually for soloists, chorus and small instrumental ensemble. The third piece is An Irish Blessing: May the road, may it rise to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the rain, may it softly fall upon your fields. And may God hold you in the palm of his hand. The Nativity Children s Choir will sing at the 4:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve. If your talented child in Grade 2 or above would like to sing, there may still be time to learn the music from a disc available in the Church Office. Find out more by contacting Paul Batchelor through the office or in person after Mass.
3 Page Three Church of the Nativity December 16, 2018 Announcing My Retirement as Pastor on June 30, 2019 [ere is the announcement that I made at the end of all of the Masses on the weekend of December 1 st and 2 nd calling parishioners attention to Bishop Robert McElroy s letter to me granting my request to retire as the Pastor of the Church of the Nativity on June 30, 2019.] And finally, I call your attention to the copy of Bishop Robert McElroy s letter on page three of this week s parish bulletin granting my request to retire on June 30 th. During this past year, I have had a number of conversations both with Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan and with Bishop McElroy about the possibility of my retiring this year, rather than waiting until Canon Law requires that I retire as pastor at age seventy-five in Interesting enough, the conclusion of my conversations with Bishop Dolan and Bishop McElroy seems to fit very well with the theme of my homily this weekend on the First Sunday of Advent: What are you waiting for? Bishop McElroy s letter explains very well my request to retire this year, when he says that after forty-seven years as a priest, I have manifestly earned a future life freed from the burdens of parish administration. The word retirement is, of course, a total misnomer when it comes to the retirement of a priest. A priest is ordained to be a priest forever, but a priest need not be assigned as a pastor forever. And that s why I have decided to retire this year (rather than waiting for two years), so that I can be freed to function more as a priest than as a CEO. What I love most about being a priest is celebrating the Eucharist and all of the other Sacraments, and in retirement I will have more opportunities to engage in truly priestly ministry and not parish administration, which our retired Bishop, Robert Brom, often referred to as administrivia. I look forward to being with you as your pastor for these next seven months, as we begin a new liturgical year, and as together we celebrate (first) Advent and the Christmas Season, and (then) Lent and the Easter Season. I am most grateful for the many kind messages of encouragement and support that I have already received from you as you have heard about my retirement. Thank you. And may God bless you for your countless kindnesses to me. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity December 16, 2018 Third Sunday of Advent Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: Ú Ú 4 : G Cry out with joy and G gladness, F The King of Israel, the L, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. Zephaniah 3:15b for among you is the great and ho - ly one of G Israel. REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Nativity Children s Choir will reconvene for its annual appearance at the 4:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve.
