Psalm Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading God has given us an undiminished inheritance, safeguarded for us in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-9). Gospel The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20:19-31). The Call to Worship is by Philip Riley: Peace be to this house, and all who dwell in it; peace be to all who in every place, call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Offertory is by Christopher Tye, ( ). Once, when playing the organ at Queen Elizabeth I's chapel royal, he is said to have replied, when informed by her majesty that he was playing Little to delight the ear, that it was her ears that were out of tune. No record exists of a return engagement. The text is by the French academic Charles Coffin ( ) and reflects today s Gospel: O oly Spirit, Lord of grace, eternal source of love. Inflame, we pray, our inmost hearts with fire from heaven above. The Communion begins with an Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) by Antonio Lotti, who was born around e gradually gained status, first as an organist and by 1733 as acting choirmaster at St. Mark s in Venice, the basilica where the Doge worshiped on special occasions. Apart from composing a considerable amount of music for St Mark's, he also wrote for the famed female choir at one of four orphanages in Venice. Music making at these institutions was so developed by the beginning of the eighteenth century that noblemen were attempting to secure places for their talented daughters education in them. For Venetian composers and performers, these institutions provided an important source of income. The second piece at 9 is a Regina Caeli by Franz Xaver Witt ( ), a German priest and musician who founded the Cecilia Society to revive the use of Gregorian chant and promote the composition of new liturgical music in an older style. The plainsong Regina Caeli chant is believed to have been written sometime between the ninth and the twelfth centuries. It draws attention to Mary s joy in the resurrection of her Son: O Queen of eaven, be joyful, Alleluia. For he whom you have humbly borne for us, alleluia, as risen as he promised, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. St. Gregory the Great heard its first three lines chanted by angels on a certain Easter morning in Rome while walking barefoot in a procession. e was so inspired, the story goes, that he was moved to add the last line. The third piece at 9 is by the American Lutheran composer Walter Pelz (b.1926), a nationally known composer, arranger and organist who earned a doctorate at the University of Minnesota, where he studied with the German organist einrich Fleischer. is several hundred works include verses, offertories, anthems, solos, cantatas, hymns, choral symphonies and organ works. The text is Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you. The Communion at 10:30 begins with the Lotti Agnus Dei and continues with the Pelz Peace I Leave With You (above). The third piece is A Clare Benediction by John Rutter: May the Lord show his mercy upon you, may the light of his presence be your guide, may he guard you and uphold you, may his spirit be ever by your side. When you sleep, may his angels watch over you, when you wake, may he fill you with his grace. May you love him and serve him all your days, then in heaven may you see his face.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity April 23, 2017 Second Sunday of Easter: Doubting Thomas and Divine Mercy Sunday Saint John the Evangelist, who was in the Upper Room with the other disciples on the evening of the first day after the Sabbath, tells us that Jesus came and stood among them and said: Peace be with you! and e showed them is hands and is side; e showed them is wounds. And in this way the disciples realized that it was not an apparition; it was truly e, the Risen Lord; and they were filled with joy. On the eight day Jesus came once again into the Upper Room and showed is wounds to Thomas, so that he could touch them as he had wished to, in order to believe and thus become himself a witness to the Resurrection. To us also, on this Sunday which Saint John Paul II wished to dedicate to Divine Mercy, the Lord shows us, through the Gospel reading, is wounds. They are wounds of mercy. It is true: the wounds of Jesus are wounds of mercy. Jesus invites us to behold these wounds, to touch them as Thomas did, to heal our lack of faith. Above all, e invites us to enter into the mystery of these wounds, which is the mystery of is merciful love. Through the wounds of Jesus, as in a light-filled opening, we can see the entire mystery of Christ and of God: is Passion, is earthly life, filled with compassion for the weak and the sick. And we can trace the whole history of salvation. All of this can we can see in the wounds of Jesus, crucified and risen. With Mary, in her Magnificat, we can perceive that is mercy extends from generation to generation. Reflecting on the mystery of the Lord s wounds, St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: Through these sacred wounds we can see the secret of [Christ s] heart, the great mystery of love, the sincerity of is mercy with which e has visited us from on high. On this Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope Francis invites us to..behold the way which God has opened for us to finally go from our slavery to sin and death, and thus enter into the land of life and peace. Jesus, crucified and risen, is the way and his wounds are especially full of mercy Keeping our gaze on the wounds of the Risen Jesus, we can sing with the Church: is love endures forever; eternal is is mercy. And with these words impressed on our hearts, let us go forth along the paths of history, led by the hand of our Lord and Savior, our life and our hope. A SEASON OF JOY They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers (Acts 2:42). This first line of today s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles Luke, Peter, and John who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst.
