The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. The Call to Worship is by Noel Rawsthorne, born 1929: O Sing Unto the Lord: O sing unto the Lord a new song, let the congregation of saints praise him; let them praise his name in the dance, let them sing praises to him with tabret and harp. Let the saints be joyful in glory, O sing unto the Lord a new song. The Offertory is a motet by the German composer Melchior Franck (b. 1579) who worked as court conductor to Prince Johann Casimir of Coburg and then his successor, Prince Johann Ernst, who unfortunately did not share Casimir's love for music and under whom err Franck s status and salary diminished steadily until he died in The text is Give peace in our time, O Lord. The Communion begins with a motet by Ludovico Grossi Viadana ( ) who held a succession of posts at various cathedrals in Italy, including Concordia (near Venice), Fano and Busseto. e died in Gualtieri, near Parma. The text is: O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of his passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory given to us. The second piece is a motet by the German composer ans Leo assler ( ), who like many of his contemporaries went to Italy to continue his studies. e returned to Germany in 1586, moving in turn to Augsburg and Nuremberg and finally to Ulm, where he unfortunately acquired tuberculosis, which eventually proved to be fatal, although he did have a brief stint as chapel organist in Dresden, where he composed his last works. The text, from Psalm 95, translates: Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, the sea in her fullness respond: the fields and all that is in them will be happy. Then all the trees of the woods shall rejoice before the face of the Lord, because he comes, for he shall come to judge the world with justice and the people with his truth. The third piece is a setting of the Prayer of Saint Francis of Asissi by Martin Shaw. The fourth piece is an Ave Maria by Jacob (aka Jaques) Arcadelt ( ), a Franco-Flemish composer active in both Italy and France. In 1538 he was appointed to the papal choir at St. Peter's Basilica before becoming a member of the Sistine Chapel. In early 1542 he made the acquaintance of Michelangelo, but his settings of two of the artist's sonnets were received with indifference; Michelangelo commented in a letter that he considered himself unmusical. In the end, Michelangelo paid Arcadelt with a piece of satin suitable for making into a doublet. e left Italy in 1551 to return to France, where he spent the remainder of his life. The Communion at 10:30 begins with the Viadana O sacrum convivium (above) and continues with Martin Shaw s Prayer of Saint Francis. The third piece is a Sanctus (oly, oly, oly) from the Solemn Mass in onor of Saint Cecilia, the patroness saint of music, by French composer Charles Gounod who was born in Paris in 1818 and educated at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1837.

3 Page Three Church of the Nativity November 13, Diocesan Synod: Embracing the Joy of Love Report on the General Assembly On the weekend of October 29th-30th, the Diocese of San Diego held the first diocesan synod in the nation of the theme of marriage and family life outlined in Pope Francis Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). A synod brings together representatives of the entire Catholic community in a diocese for dialogue, deliberation, prayer and decision making. For our synod here in San Diego, every parish had a delegate, as well as the university communities, theological faculties and members of the diocesan pastoral staff. These delegates included priests, religious sisters, mothers, fathers, deacons, and young adults of every culture and language. The deliberations at the synod pointed to the need for renewed dedication of married couples toward embracing the depth, permanence, sanctity and sacrifice which lie at the heart of the Catholic conception of marriage. The discussions emphasized the need to make a spirituality of marriage and family life more available to our parishioners, especially to young couples who often find it less automatic to bring prayer and the Gospel into their marriage and role as parents. The Synod pointed to the need to invite young couples lovingly, non-judgmentally and energetically into Catholic marriage and to provide mentors for them. The delegates spoke movingly to the need for the Church to reach out to divorced men and women at every moment of their journey, to support them spiritually and pastorally, to help them move through the annulment process, and to assist those who are divorced and remarried and cannot receive an annulment to utilize the internal forum of conscience in order to discern if God is calling them to return to the Eucharist. Finally, the Synod proposed a spirituality of family life which is deeply inclusive: embracing mothers and fathers beautifully bonded in their married love and the love of their children, as well as single parents, those who are widowed, our many military families where deployment brings great stress, LBGT families, families which deportation has split and families with members who have special needs. During the coming months, Bishop McElroy will be working with a committee of synod delegates who will focus on the implementation of these goals. It is our hope that through this initiative the grace of married and family life will be profoundly deepened. God bless you! Fr. Richard Duncanson (rfduncanson@nativitycatholic.org)

5 Page Five Church of the Nativity November 13, 2016 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. Psalm 98:5 Please join us in singing the Psalm Response: : Ú Ú Ú Ú 4 The G G G G Lord comes to rule the earth with jus - tice. GOD S EALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That s a pretty comforting notion especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and persevere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere in faith, this time and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. As Bishop McElroy urged, It is our opportunity to make possible the work that affects so many in our diocese: assistance to the poor, education of those who attend Catholic school, formation of new priests and care of our retired priests, evangelization and accompaniment of Young Adults, and the consoling presence of Christ for those imprisoned. As we Celebrate the Year of Mercy we encounter God s love when we express mercy and compassion, through stewardship, service and sacrifice. Just imagine what good we could do if all 1,227 Church of the Nativity households contributed to the ACA!
