Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop is not a surprising topic for the Advent season, but very surprising, perhaps, is what our readings urge us to be eager about: the cleansing of sins. Isaiah tells God s people to cry out loudly, proclaiming that the Lord will come with power to comfort them and forgive all their sins. Saint Peter inspires us to be eager to be found without spot or blemish. In Mark s Gospel, people from all over stream to the Jordan, acknowledging their sins and repenting. John the Baptist preaches the mighty power of the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin. Today s readings wake us up, reminding us how great God is. May we eagerly seek the powerful peace that God s forgiveness brings. REALITY CHECK The spiritual world is real, every bit as real as the material world. We cannot properly see spiritual realities like love, wisdom, and goodness, but we know they exist and influence our lives. We may not be able to point out hatred or sin on a map, but each our hearts and has real consequences for our relationships with others. For followers of Christ, acknowledging the reality of sin is not at all depressing. We naturally grow frustrated with ourselves when we sin, but Jesus has a different reaction. In His astonishing mercy, the Lord sees our sin as an occasion to show just how much He loves us - and how He loves us. Jesus Christ takes our own sin upon Himself and accepts the punishment - death - that should rightfully come to us. AIM HIGH In dying for us, Jesus shattered the limitations of human life. Sin had doomed our earthly existence, but then Jesus died for us and gave us an all-access pass to everlasting life. Saint Peter speaks gently to us about Jesus gift. Jesus is patient with us, to us, we can aim high each day, striving to avoid sin and do good. Not even the sky is our limit! Peter encourages us further. we are not trapped in the material realm. The salvation of God is real and unifying. 2 Dear Parish Family, How many towns do you suppose have a newspaper called The Herald? It s a good name for a newspaper because it refers to one who proclaims significant news. It also can refer to a person who comes before to announce what will follow, a forerunner like John. The angels who heralded the good news of Jesus birth fit into a long line of heralds who proclaimed that God s promises would at last be fulfilled. This week everyone seems to be announcing good news. Isaiah and the psalmist herald and describe others heralding glad tidings. Mark proclaims the gospel [or good news ] of Jesus Christ (Mark 1:1). He also depicts John as a herald in the tradition of Isaiah. And Peter speaks eloquently of God s promise and patience. Can we bring ourselves to hearken to their words and believe them? Please line up in cars by the Junior High walkway to pick up your children at 8:30 p.m. FAMILY REFLECTION Important Passage: Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay His promise, as some regard "delay," but He is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according to His promise, we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before Him, at peace. BIBLES AND CATECHISMS PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS First Communion is a two year process that typically begins in the 1 st grade and ends at the end of the 2 nd grade with a First Communion Mass. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. Also, children are asked to miss no more than one CCE class a school year in order to be prepared for the sacrament. Out of Sequence First Communion is a two year process for baptized children that have begun preparation for First Communion after 1 st grade. There are additional sessions after the end of regular CCE to prepare an Out of Sequence child to receive First Communion. Confirmation preparation requires two years of preparation, but teens can take up to four years, if needed. This preparation usually begins in the 9 th grade. Preparation includes weekly attendance at Sunday Mass, attendance at two confirmation retreats, all with Confirmation, and weekly CCE attendance. Students who attend Catholic high schools are to attend the first scheduled CCE class of each month as well as all the other components listed above. The youth are asked to miss no more than one CCE class per school year. Sponsors and/or the candidate s parents are asked to attend some classes and an Evening of Reflection to help the youth grow closer to Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many people think in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, It Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where s Waldo? children s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven.
