Yet it is not always easy to accomplish. Many things get in the way of taking this commandment to heart. Sometimes, it is things that get in the way, but more often, we get in the way. We tend to see things through our own perspective, rather than considering the other person s point of view. In our interactions with others, we often fail to truly listen, focusing instead on our next response or point to be made. We say we love our neighbor, right up to the point at which doing so requires some sacrifice of time, attention, or financial support, and then suddenly, a thousand reasons for keeping to ourselves emerge. Jesus knew this when He summed up the great LOVE GOD You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind (Matthew 22:37). In this greatest and first commandment, Jesus describes deep and intentional love of God. Like the Thessalonians to whom Saint Paul wrote, we are to turn away from anything that could become an idol, anything that takes first place in our lives ahead of God. Loving God so completely calls us to place our lives in the heart of God, assured that when we do, all will be well. When we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, we gradually learn to see the world and all people through the eyes of God, who is love. LOVE NEIGHBOR When God gave the covenant to Moses, the commandments of loving God and neighbor were clear, including what love of neighbor is all about. For example, You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourself in the land of Egypt (Exodus 22:20). In other words, care for the least among you; their struggles are not so different from your own. And remember, they are precious in God s sight, as are you. All are held in love by our good and gracious God. Jesus is the ultimate sign of God s love, and the perfect model of what it means to love God. Jesus teaches that real love requires sacrifice. There are moments when loving our neighbor requires us to put the other person first. No longer is it just nice to help the person who is poor, ill, lonely, in prison, homeless, or grieving. It is necessary. Their need is greater than our own. Failing to meet the person in his or her need is to ignore our very self. 2 Dear Parish Family, In an article on successful aging (New Theology Review, November, 2010), love is at the heart of growing old gracefully. Research shows that being in a loving relationship quiets the demons of depression and despair. So, if you want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus would agree. The rabbis of Jesus day argued about which was the greatest commandment of the six hundred thirteen in the Torah. When the Pharisees asked Jesus, He answered that what God wanted most from the chosen people who had been liberated from slavery This love one another as one loves oneself. Loving is a contagious activity. If you are loved, you tend to be loving. Paul is sounding this note when he writes to the Thessalonians about how they became Timothy and Silvanus, and of the Lord Himself, receiving the word and living in faith, joy, and love for each other, because they believed in God s love for them, revealed in Christ. generosity. The Lord called on Israel to show weak orphans and defenseless widows, and not extorting the poor by demanding interest on loans. May they teach your people in meekness and serve you in holiness with an undivided mind and a willing soul. May they be the light of your only begotten Son that the word of your gospel may be spread and our name may be glorified in every creature. May they serve at your holy altar with pure hearts and good consciences. Grant that they may prosper in all your commandments and the keeping of your laws, so that they may be able to minister joyfully on the day of your coming

FIRST RECONCILIATION RETREAT CCE and Day School Sunday, November 12 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Parish Hall BIBLES AND CATECHISMS PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS First Communion is a two year process that typically begins in the 1 st grade and ends at the end of the 2 nd grade with a First Communion Mass. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. Also, children are asked to miss no more than one CCE class a school year in order to be prepared for the sacrament. Out of Sequence First Communion is a two year process for baptized children that have begun preparation for First Communion after 1 st grade. There are additional sessions after the end of regular CCE to prepare an Out of Sequence child to receive First Communion. Confirmation preparation requires two years of preparation, but teens can take up to four years, if needed. This preparation usually begins in the 9 th grade. Preparation includes weekly attendance at Sunday Mass, attendance at two confirmation retreats, all with Confirmation, and weekly CCE attendance. Students who attend Catholic high schools are to attend the first scheduled CCE class of each month as well as all the other components listed above. The youth are asked to miss no more than one CCE class per school year. Sponsors and/or the candidate s parents are asked to attend some classes and an Evening of Reflection to help the youth grow closer to Christ. The bigspending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The Day of the Dead is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. October 13, 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most Holy Rosary, we implore you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary. By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask, through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

7 BALANCE Today s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who for both in the life of faith.
