1 HOLY ROSARY CATHOLIC CHURCH 1416 George Street Rosenberg, Texas Church Office (281) School (281) FATHER WILLIAM D. BARTNISKI, Pastor BRICK HODGE, Deacon CHARLIE BUHAY, Deacon ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON 1700 San Jacinto Street Houston, Texas (713) Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop The Most Rev. Joseph A. Fiorenza, Archbishop Emeritus The Most Rev. Vincent M. Rizzotto, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus The Most Rev. George A. Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop Education experts often debate testing: when to test students, why, and how. Our readings today suggest that testing is so central to the human experience that we require proofs even from God. In the book of Exodus, Moses gives two names to the spot where complain of their thirst, God provides proof of divine providence. Water flows from a rock, and God passes the test. In the Gospel story of the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus passes His own test with flying colors, convincing a skeptical woman that He is indeed the Messiah. Saint Paul s Letter to the Romans guarantees Christians permanent success - not because we are good at tests, but because God is. Jesus proves God s love once and for all by dying for us. PROVE IT What does it take to convince us of the truth? Some of us need simply to hear from a trusted authority. Others need time to think an argument through for themselves, step by step. Many of us tend to learn the hard way, experiencing life s lessons in dramatic and personal ways. Various kinds of evidence work differently on each of us. For the parched and wandering Israelites, a miraculous source of water persuades them to return to belief in God. For the Samaritan woman, Jesus prophetic knowledge of the intimate details of her life suffices. What will it be for us? What can convince us, forever, that God made us, saved us from death, and treasures us as beloved children? Saint Paul urges us to stop asking for proof; we need look no further than the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He reminds us how unusual it is for good people to sacrifice themselves for other good people; it is utterly preposterous for a good person to give his life for the ungodly, for sinners. Yet that is precisely what Jesus does for us. LIVE IT Our insatiable need for proof is nothing to be ashamed of. Hunger for evidence points to an active intellect. Even after we learn an important truth, we need to nurture that knowledge throughout our whole lives. Most of us first heard about Jesus when we were children. We must continue to deepen our understanding as we mature. In a similar way, the Samaritans first believe their fellow townswoman simply because of her testimony about Jesus. Then, after encountering Him themselves, they are convinced Jesus is the savior of the world: We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savor of the world. Personal experience confirms and deepens their faith. Harden not your hearts, the Psalmist tells us. Let s keep learning from God s signs all around us. 03/19/2017 SCHEDULE OF SACRAMENTS, PRAYER AND DEVOTIONS SACRAMENT OF PENANCE: Saturday: 11:00 a.m. - Noon Penance Service: Advent and Lent SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Second Sunday of each month at 12:15 PM by appointment SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: One year in advance, instructions required. 2 Dear Parish Family, As witnesses come forward to testify in a court of law they are asked, Do you swear to tell the truth, the Monday, Mar. 20 8:00 a.m.: No Mass Tuesday, Mar. 21 8:00 a.m.: Benjie Matocha Wednesday, Mar. 22 8:00 a.m.: Mildred Barcak MASS INTENTIONS but the truth? They must respond, I do before the court will hear what they have to say. Everyone expects, however, that their testimony will be colored by whether they are hostile or friendly toward the defendant. In today s Gospel account the woman at the well must have expected Jesus to be and a sinner, she was considered unclean by the Jews. No wonder she seems afraid and defensive in her answers to Jesus. Yet Jesus tells her the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She tells Jesus the truth, too, but it is only a partial truth, the truth that she is willing to admit to herself and to this stranger. When He responds by speaking the whole truth about her past, why doesn t she harden her heart and protest His rudeness, or simply take her bucket and go? It must be Thursday, Mar. 23 8:15 a.m.: Mary Bartniski Friday, Mar. 24 8:00 a.m.: Rose Cervenka Saturday, Mar. 25 8:00 a.m.: No Mass 5:30 p.m.: Steve Blackledge, Sr. Sunday, Mar. 26 7:00 a.m.: For the Families of Holy Rosary Parish 9:00 a.m.: John & Frances Chovanec 11:00 a.m.: Vocations & Religious Life SANCTUARY LAMPS The sanctuary lamps will burn this week for Edward, Rose & Mark Cervenka by Leroy & Marilyn Stavinoha and for Living & Deceased Members of KJZT #77 by KJZT #77. she is and who Jesus is. Then, perhaps for the first time in her life, she is free to testify the whole truth to everyone she meets. Only love can break through the defenses that we erect to hide the truth from ourselves and others. Only love can reveal the truth about a God who responds to our thirsts and ignores our fear and faithlessness. Only love can account for the fact that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Love, Peace & Prayers, We pray that this Lent will be a time of deeper understanding of what it means to be God s beloved child. We ask God to open our eyes to recognize those things that draw us away and to be open to how God might be drawing us closer. Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Mindful of our Patroness, Mary, and her example as parent, teacher and intercessor, we are committed to accomplish this mission through service, education, prayer and celebration of the Eucharist. Spring, Texas THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists portrayals of Jesus and from His very ministry, during which He often upset or reversed people s expectations about Him or the ways of God. This reversal is at play in today s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath His status. In addition He, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He - whose parched lips will say I thirst before He dies - is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life -giving waters of our baptism into His Body. - Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago, the custom of sending some pieces of consecrated bread from the Lord s table began to take hold. Originally, it was a way of assuring the sick and imprisoned of their bonds of faith and affection with the community from whom they were separated. By the third century, at least in Rome, we have evidence that the bishop would consign some of the sacred elements to presbyters or deacons. There was a crisis in the unity of the church early on, called the quartodeciman controversy, since some people wanted to celebrate the Pasch on the fourteenth day (quartodecima) of the Jewish month Nissan, even if it didn t fall on a Sunday. The debate so fractured the church that the historian of the era, Eusebius, reported a new development to the pope. He wrote that the churches holding to the Lord s Day sent out consecrated bread to the disgruntled people of the quartodeciman pastors with whom they were quarreling. Meanwhile, bishops complained about people taking the Eucharist home. St. Cyprian told a cautionary tale of a sinful woman who tried to open the casket containing the consecrated bread in her home. She was deterred from receiving, he said, by flames erupting from the box. Clearly, he wanted people to think twice before bringing Communion home! The Council of Nicaea defined the old rule of the church as allowing for reserving the Eucharistic bread for the sake of the dying. The same council could foresee circumstances of persecution when people might have the Eucharist on hand at the point of a sword. The first and enduring purpose for reserving the Eucharist is viaticum for the dying. -Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
