Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop Imagine a place where no one is hungry or thirsty, homeless or in need. In this place, people would willingly offer care to those who are ill or in prison; no one would be lonely or displaced. Everyone would be honored as people who possess inherent dignity as children of God. This is the image Jesus paints of His kingdom. Christ has established His kingdom here on earth, and yet there is much in the world that awaits its full and eternal expression. We see glimpses of it in the selfless care of people for the poor, imprisoned, sick, and lonely. These glimpses, and the words of Christ Himself, urge us to be people who care for the least ones among us. Jesus tells us that in doing so, we care for Christ Himself, who is our Lord and King. JESUS, SHEPHERD AND KING Jesus is our Good Shepherd. The shepherd gathers and protects the sheep, feeding them, and tending to their needs. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark, the Lord tells Ezekiel (Ezekiel 34:12). The shepherd also guides the sheep that do not follow as they should: but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly (Ezekiel 34:16). As sheep in God s pasture, we are to listen and respond to the voice of the shepherd, growing in obedience and following Him. Jesus Christ is also the king of the universe. As king, Christ will judge our actions or lack of action. To live as people who belong to Christ, we must allow Christ to be the king of our hearts, minds, and actions. COME, YOU WHO ARE BLESSED As people under the kingship of Christ, we must also be shepherds who tend to the flock. It is upon this that we will be judged. Yet how many times do we pass a person on the street without taking notice of his or her distress? Perhaps they are homeless, hungry, in need of psychological help or emotional support, and we walk by, maybe with a nod or a brief greeting with eyes averted, not knowing what to say or to do. We might offer a silent prayer as we move along to our destination. We may wonder why someone has not offered aid or taken the person to the nearest shelter. In our hearts we know that we could be that someone. Each of us has some particular something we must do in word, deed, or prayer, in person, or through the local and world-wide organizations that serve the poor. 2 Dear Parish Family, Tom is allergic to cats, even when they re not around but once were. His eyes turn red, and he starts to wheeze so that he has to excuse himself and leave. Oddly enough, he has lately befriended a neighborhood stray at his back door. He doesn t touch it, and he won t allow it into his house, but he feeds it regularly and even misses it when it doesn t show up on his stoop. Something moves us to care for the lost among us. It is often instinctive, and at times even contrary to our own best interests, as with Tom and his allergy to cats. Is such sympathy for the underdog written on the back of our psyches? Are lost souls really long-lost kin? Is it guilt that moves us to contribute to food pantries and bread lines or is it genuine compassion? If we are to form in human flesh, then those instincts to visit shut-ins imprisoned in their own homes and to free those who still find themselves locked into poverty are Godly instincts. It is holiness bred in our bones, incapable of being held in. giving to a food pantry or volunteering at a soup kitchen. Because someone is a stranger, we welcome them into our neighborhood and seek ways to comfort the immigrant. Because someone is imprisoned by illness or old age, we visit them and check in on them. And because in the face of so many needs, we seek ways to institutionalize our care through government policy and funding. It is all a Godly instinct. Rev. Joseph J. A signed Christmas caroling liability form is required for participation! PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS First Communion is a two year process that typically begins in the 1 st grade and ends at the end of the 2 nd grade with a First Communion Mass. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. Also, children are asked to miss no more than one CCE class a school year in order to be prepared for the sacrament. Out of Sequence First Communion is a two year process for baptized children that have begun preparation for First Communion after 1 st grade. There are additional sessions after the end of regular CCE to prepare an Out of Sequence child to receive First Communion. Confirmation preparation requires two years of preparation, but teens can take up to four years, if needed. This preparation usually begins in the 9 th grade. Preparation includes weekly attendance at Sunday Mass, attendance at two confirmation retreats, all with Confirmation, and weekly CCE attendance. Students who attend Catholic high schools are to attend the first scheduled CCE class of each month as well as all the other components listed above. The youth are asked to miss no more than one CCE class per school year. Sponsors and/or the candidate s parents are asked to attend some classes and an Evening of Reflection to help the youth grow closer to Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century of Sundays only in In 1925, the world was in The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today s world as well. In 1969, it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. So, a diocesan priest from the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston will serve wherever the Cardinal appoints him within the boundaries of the Archdiocese. For the most part, he lives among the people in the parishes of the diocese, ministering to the day-to-day needs of God s people. His ministry centers around the administration of the funerals, hearing confessions and anointing the sick. In a way, he is like a general practitioner or family doctor that caters to the needs of the people in his parish such CCE classes, prayer groups, young adult meetings, etc. 100th ANNIVERSARY MIRACLE OF THE SUN AT FATIMA Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in the village of Fatima in Portugal in She urged prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most Holy Rosary, we implore you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary. By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask, through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

7 CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ s work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ s saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls the least ones (Matthew 25:45).
