Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop As we enter into a new Advent season, our readings urge us to watch eagerly for our redeemer. Isaiah cries out to the Lord with feeling, Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down! Thanks be to God, we know the Lord has come down to us. God is, in fact, still present among us in the Eucharist and in every created thing. Yet, like Saint Paul, we know Jesus promises to come again; we await that mysterious, final revelation in fellowship with Jesus and one another. Even in the best of Christian communities, however, waiting can be dreary and difficult. Mark s Gospel gets our adrenaline flowing: Be watchful! Be alert! Although we have the enormous consolation of knowing Jesus already saved the world by his death and resurrection, we must ask the Spirit to rouse us to prayer and service as together we watch for Jesus. COMMERCIAL BREAK CLIFFHANGERS for a long series of advertisements. Dramas withhold their shocking endings, reality television makes us wait to see to in order to enjoy the resolution we long for. In a way, we are living in a commercial break. Forty days after rising from the dead, there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen CAUGHT DOING GOOD Thankfully, our daily life means so much more than any commercial break. We are not just marking time, because God treasures our daily thoughts, works, joys, and sufferings. Nothing escapes the loving attention of the Lord. Nothing is irrelevant to God. In fact, we are God s beloved servants, each with [our] own work, as Jesus says in the Gospel. God knows intimately our challenges and wants to accompany us in all we do. A line from today s reading from Isaiah can help us connect our daily work with God s love: Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways! 2 Dear Parish Family, (Read in an article recently) These days I live in what had been for well over a hundred years a parish convent for the sisters who once taught in the parish s grade school. Like every old house it about at nighttime and never seem to be heard in the daytime house. And because all of us who live here are adults, we say it s just the noises of an old house bedding down for a sleep - until one of us is home alone at night. Then, when the others return, we rush to tell them how Mother Caroline was up and The dark has a way of flaunting itself with fearsome noises and sowing mysterious unknowns. And when not only our bodies but also our very lives find themselves in the dark, when we don t know how best to deal with disciplining our children, or where to direct the well, such darkness can seem unbearable. Then the dark is too much with us. We re never quite sure what mysterious unknowns our God might raise up out of the dark. That may also be why each of us in our own crazy way tries to befriend the dark s noises. We say they re the sounds of an old kicking in, or we say it s Mother Caroline. One way or another we find a way to live with the darkness, for who knows what our God, the divine potter of the reading from Isaiah, may yet do with the damp clay of our lives? Rev. Joseph J. A signed Christmas caroling liability form is required for participation! Sacramental Sunday for Confirmation II Teens December 3 in the Parish Hall 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mass & lunch included. BIBLES AND CATECHISMS PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS First Communion is a two year process that typically begins in the 1 st grade and ends at the end of the 2 nd grade with a First Communion Mass. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. Also, children are asked to miss no more than one CCE class a school year in order to be prepared for the sacrament. Out of Sequence First Communion is a two year process for baptized children that have begun preparation for First Communion after 1 st grade. There are additional sessions after the end of regular CCE to prepare an Out of Sequence child to receive First Communion. Confirmation preparation requires two years of preparation, but teens can take up to four years, if needed. This preparation usually begins in the 9 th grade. Preparation includes weekly attendance at Sunday Mass, attendance at two confirmation retreats, all with Confirmation, and weekly CCE attendance. Students who attend Catholic high schools are to attend the first scheduled CCE class of each month as well as all the other components listed above. The youth are asked to miss no more than one CCE class per school year. Sponsors and/or the candidate s parents are asked to attend some classes and an Evening of Reflection to help the youth grow closer to Christ.

6 PRAY FOR OUR HEROES IN THE MILITARY WATCH OUT! In Advent, we celebrate our hope that the Lord might come more fully into our lives. The first reading from Isaiah voices the hope of to bring us back, when the Father sent His Son, Jesus, to save us. Our faith in Jesus leads us to a new way of looking at the world. Like the gatekeepers in Jesus Gospel parable, we need to keep our eyes open for Him. The recent re-translation of the prayers of the Mass can be The Corinthians were also watching for the Lord to come. They were thinking of Jesus as coming in glory. Though we don t see the full glory of the Lord, part of that glory is His presence in the sacraments. In them we celebrate not just the coming of the Lord, but His working in the world. Children have fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days something totally unconnected to religious life, like a small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of Gengenbach in Germany s Black Forest. Every year the townspeople invite an illustrator of children s books to create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in tone on December 17 from Advent longing and preparation toward imminent hope in Christ s coming. 7 GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God s faithful love for us, and call upon and we are sinful (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God s promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God s might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God s hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory.
