Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop Blessed Giles of Assisi, in the thirteenth century, wrote, No one can attain the knowledge of God but by humility. The way to mount high is to descend. This helps express the profound truth of today s readings. In Ezekiel s view, only the humble can acknowledge fault and turn to God with repentance. In the Gospel from Matthew, Saint Paul s stirring hymn tells the story of Jesus, who through his humility showed us the depths of God s love. Jesus Christ is exalted as Lord precisely because of his humility and service to God. In our own parishes and faith communities, just like the Christian community of Philippi, we are called to follow Jesus way, and live with humility and in service to one another. BY WHAT AUTHORITY? Today s Gospel describes the second half of a sharp exchange between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders. They asked, By what authority do you do these things? Much of this dispute is about authority. How could Jesus claim to represent God s purposes? This question continues to resonate today. Who speaks for God? Who doesn t? How do we tell the difference? Jesus response is, look at the evidence. Look at how, in response to John the Baptist and to Jesus, people were healed in body and in spirit. Look how people found new intimacy with God, and how they turned away from their sin. The authority of John and of Jesus rested not in some position within the religious institutions, but in the grace and healing power evident in John and in Jesus. CHANGING YOUR MIND The readings today make it clear that to be a follower of Jesus you have to be able to change your mind. More precisely, we must allow God to change us, to transform our minds. For most of us, this can be really hard. This is why the readings speak so much about humility. Humility opens up our capacity to be transformed. Humility on the other hand. Humility can be cultivated in the practice of reflection. This might mean claiming with the help of a spiritual guide or director. Humility can also be cultivated in actions of service. We learn Jesus humility through washing each other s feet. We can place other s interests ahead of our own, and relinquish our need to be in control. 2 Dear Parish Family, August, an older black woman, is talking about the problem with people to Lily, a younger white woman who has run away from an abusive father. Lily has said that people don t really know what matters. But do know what matters, but don t choose it. God tells Ezekiel that virtue s proof is in choosing to do the right thing. What you choose to do matters. So be careful not to go off the right path at the end of your days. On the other hand, you might be off the right path for years, but end up hopping back on at the very end, and you will have life. It doesn t sound very fair; nevertheless, it s where you are when the end comes that counts. And you don t know when the end will come. Jesus confronts the religious leaders with a parable. A father asks his two sons to do some work in the vineyard. BIBLES AND CATECHISMS PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS First Communion is a two year process that typically begins in the 1 st grade and ends at the end of the 2 nd grade with a First Communion Mass. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. Also, children are asked to miss no more than one CCE class a school year in order to be prepared for the sacrament. Out of Sequence First Communion is a two year process for baptized children that have begun preparation for First Communion after 1 st grade. There are additional sessions after the end of regular CCE to prepare an Out of Sequence child to receive First Communion. Confirmation preparation requires two years of preparation, but teens can take up to four years, if needed. This preparation usually begins in the 9 th grade. Preparation includes weekly attendance at Sunday Mass, attendance at two confirmation retreats, all 100th ANNIVERSARY MIRACLE OF THE SUN AT FATIMA Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in the village of Fatima in Portugal in She urged prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The youth are asked to miss no more than one CCE class per school year. Sponsors and/or the candidate s parents are asked to attend some classes and an Evening of Reflection to help the youth grow closer to Christ.

7 GOD S WAYS In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for The LORD s way is not fair! (Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down.
