1 HOLY ROSARY CATHOLIC CHURCH 1416 George Street Rosenberg, Texas Church (281) School (281) Father William D. Bartniski, Pastor Brick Hodge, Deacon Charlie Buhay, Deacon Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston 1700 San Jacinto Street Houston, Texas (713) Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop The Most Rev. Joseph A. Fiorenza, Archbishop Emeritus The Most Rev. Vincent M. Rizzotto, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus The Most Rev. George A. Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop We are now at the fifth Sunday in our Lenten preparation. The focus of the readings turns our attention from the rules we read about during the third week to a new covenant, a new relationship between God and all of us. Jeremiah tells us of God s intention to enter our very hearts, the center of our life. The psalm asks for a clean heart so that we are ready to receive the joy of salvation. Hebrews tells us that Jesus too prayed, was made perfect, and became the source of eternal salvation. In John, Jesus explains the contradiction that this new relationship involves: death becomes life. God gives everything to us, including forgiveness. God holds back nothing from us, giving us even the beloved Son, Jesus. WRITTEN IN STONE The rules written on the stone tablets given to Moses are easy to remember, if not so easy to follow. Today we learn that the rules are no longer outside ourselves but that God has written them on our hearts. God says, I will be their God and they shall be my people. We are now bound in a relationship with God and are not just following God s rules. The model for the relationship is Jesus. Jesus, Son though He was, was made perfect through His suffering and became the source of salvation for all of us, who are far less than perfect. Jesus describes this relationship as a grain of wheat, whole unto itself, that falls into the embrace of the earth and is broken in order to produce the life-sustaining wheat. WRITTEN IN FLESH When the rules are written on our hearts, we must look within to measure ourselves, to discover what God expects of us. like a deep friendship, a marriage, or parent and child, requires a whole-hearted commitment, a willingness to put the lives of others before our own. We share with Jesus such a relationship, a deep longing for God so that our lives have a meaning beyond their measure. Each of our lives is more than a series of experiences, events, accomplishments. Each of our expects more of us than rules. This relationship gives us more than rules. This relationship asks for our life and in return gives us eternal life and salvation. 03/18/18 SCHEDULE OF SACRAMENTS, PRAYER AND DEVOTIONS SACRAMENT OF PENANCE: Saturday:11:00 a.m. - Noon Penance Service: Advent & Lent SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Second Sunday of each month at 12:15 p.m. by appointment SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: One year in advance, instructions required. 2 Dear Parish Family, One of the earliest pictures of Jesus I can remember portrayed Him at prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. I still see His hands, clasped tight. They spoke to me of an inner struggle long before I knew about His words, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will (Mark 14:36). More than any other scene in the Gospels, this one brought home what it meant to say Jesus was truly man. Today s Gospel has been called John s version of the agony in the garden. The word agony (agonia in Greek) means struggle, and we can hear the struggle in Jesus awareness that the hour He has spoken of before in John s Gospel, beginning at Cana, has finally arrived. It is the hour of His being lifted up - the hour of both His glory and His crucifixion. It is why He came into the world, and yet we hear Him say, I am troubled. We hear Him wrestling with Himself, asking for release from the hour, but then recognizing that it holds the purpose for which I came. Hebrews affirms this when it says He offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one able to save Him from death, and He was heard because suffering and become the source of eternal salvation for all who listen to Him and follow in His steps. Children should attend Mass every Sunday to participate in the sacramental life of the church. In addition, there are Sacramental Sundays to help the children learn about reconciliation and the Eucharist. We, as a community of believers, are called to proclaim the Gospel, to be witness and sign of God s Kingdom on earth and to work for our salvation. Mindful of our Patroness, Mary, and her example as parent, teacher and intercessor, we are committed to accomplish this mission through service, education, prayer and celebration of the Eucharist. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means olive press, and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured - knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a gethsemane, and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and low into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says His own blood perspired from Him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or The Cry of the Lord, built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ALTAR SOCIETY MEETING & LUNCHEON 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20 Marian Hall All ladies of the parish are invited BE AWARE We need to be aware that happiness can sometimes sneak in through the door we didn t know we had left open. Anonymous SAVED BY GOD S LOVE a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
