Sheltz, Auxiliary Bishop When Jesus presents the images of salt and light in today s Gospel from Matthew, he is describing some of the primary to their world. As light reveals what is hidden in darkness, so Christians are to bring wisdom and truth to others. To be Christian is not to sit back, give thanks, and savor God s blessings. Just as salt and light are gifts from God for everyone, those who follow Christ are to be agents of God s love for all. Saint Paul describes this further, teaching that we might begin by embracing humility and vulnerability. Isaiah calls us to be generous and to work for justice. These are the characteristics of a city set on a mountain, a community of salt and light. LAMPS AND BUSHEL BASKETS Jesus uses the present tense, you are salt of the earth and light of the world. This can be troubling to hear, upon a little reflection, when we already suspect that we are not. It s easy to see how often we fail to truly be salt and light for others. This can lead to discouragement and a fear of failing again. But Jesus says that being salt and light is God s gift, and not our own accomplishment. He notes the bushel basket that prevents the light of the lamp from being seen. We have created and received all kinds of patterns of thinking and behaving that block our capacity to be light for others. But these patterns do not define us. Whatever our faults, we are primarily God s beloved and gifted people. We can have hope that God will assist us in addressing our bushel basket, to overcome what blocks our ability to love others. Jesus Good News for us is that we are ultimately not the bushel basket, but the lamp. CITY ON A MOUNTAIN However, along with salt of the earth and light of the world, we hear of a city set on a mountain. Clearly, these images are also directed to Christian communities. A parish, for example, is called to have a visible, caring presence in its local area. As salt and light, a community of faith can add its own flavor and wisdom to its surroundings. A faith community can have its own bushel basket, too. This might include unresolved internal conflicts, or a lack of welcoming to strangers, or just being too internally focused. These can prevent the community from demonstrating God s love. If you have a family member or friend you would like to include, please call the church office at TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription Title of the Cross, and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke.
