The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand threedimensional scene of the place of Jesus birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, igurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for surround or hedge. Over the centuries, the custom spread irst to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of igures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where s Waldo? children s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to ill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was wellestablished, particularly in Naples, and had a irm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to ind presepios with ive hundred igures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, Godwithus! 2

FAMILY REFLECTION OPPORTUNITY: Did you know that there is a Catholic Family Curriculum for the new Animated Movie, The Star? NCCL, in collaboration with the FCH has created a family catholic curriculum for Sony s animated movie The Star, which was released on November 17th. These family lessons offer catechetical and pastoral leaders, and families, new and varied ways to explore the Christmas story. Six themes were extracted from the movie, The Star, to encourage faith sharing and compiled into one curriculum. The themes include The Christmas Story, Divine Providence, Friendship, Prayer, Las Posadas, and Vocation. Each theme includes four sections: PRAYER, LEARN, REFLECT and ACT. The movie is heartwarming and hopeful, and will be loved by audiences for years to come. Help spread some Christmas cheer! 5 Holy Waiting Your outlook on life is deeply affected by what you expect. If life is just a rat race, a ierce competition, a struggle against other people to see who can get ahead irst, then you are waiting for a slap. However, if you are waiting and watching for goodness, kindness, a place to bring your lovefor you are waiting for beauty and truth wherever you may ind them, then you are waiting for a kiss. If we allow ourselves to be paralyzed by the injustice and the evil that we see in our world, then we become unfaithful to the call to prepare a way for the Lord. We don t prepare the world to receive Jesus by retreating into our own little worlds of comfort and protection. Pope John Paul II said in an address to a group of religious superiors, sometimes it might seem that love, justice and idelity are no l9onger present in today s world. Do not be afraid; the Lord is with you, he goes before you and follows you with the idelity of his love. Witness with your life what you believe! The God of consolations wants to gently hold us, comfort us, and tenderly love us. As we prepare for the celebration of the birth of the infantgod, are we not also being called to tenderness in our own lives? In a world where violence is destroying so many lives and so much of our environment, the Christian response of tenderness is needed more than ever, we need to respect and protect one another, and the earth of which we are a part. As we move towards the feast of the birth of the infant Jesus and as we prepare for his Second Coming, may we spread the tenderness of God in our own families and neighborhoods. The only money we receive right now is from the sale of lots. Over the years that balance has accumulated to a savings of approximately $30,000. With these funds, we have to maintain upkeep of the grounds, lawn mowing, snow removal and tree removal. We split the mowing and snow removal with the St. Mary s Parish 60/40. But with costs going up over our budget the last few years, that money is going out much faster than it is coming in. So the Cemetery committee would like to build up a Perpetual Care Fund. If we could get enough money in it, it would be able to sustain the upkeep of the grounds on interest alone, therefore insuring our grandparents, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children s plots. But we need your help to have this taken care of for years to come. Please help us get this started and consider a substantial donation to get us at a sustainable amount for the care of our families deceased members who are gone but count on us to look after their plots.
