2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Mark your calendar! - Parish Census: October 14th -22nd. STARTS NEXT WEEKEND Our parish hasn t taken a parish census for about 2 decades. Since we do not move anyone out of the parish unless we hear from them, we are very certain that we have hundreds of people registered who no longer consider themselves parishioners. We feel it s time to update our files to insure that they are accurate. Also, and text have become so popular, we are hoping to create a list of s and cell phone numbers that we can use to communicate, important parish information. We will keep this communication to a minimum and will keep all information absolutely confidential. And so, we will be conducting a census in October. We will ask every parishioner, no matter how long you ve been registered, to complete a new registration card for the people in your household. On the weekends of October and 21-22, we will have new registration cards available for you to complete. Please plan to stop on the way out of Mass to pick up a card and either complete it or take it home to complete and bring it back next week. If you are not available these two weekends, cards will be available in the parish office, or may be completed online. We will assume that anyone who has not completed a new registration by the end of November no longer wishes to be considered a registered member of the parish, so when in doubt, fill it out! Are you interested in being part of our Parish Pastoral Council? If so, there will be an open parish meeting on Wednesday October 18 in the Parish Hall at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be no more than an hour. We are looking for 4 new members to join the council. The Parish Pastoral Council serves as an advisory council to the pastor. It meets once a month or at the discretion of the pastor. It is made up of no more than 12 members. You must be a member of the parish to be on the council. The 4 new members of the council will be chosen by lot from those interested who attend the meeting on October 18. If you are not able to attend the meeting but would like to be included in the lottery please let me know either by a phone call or an . The 100th Anniversary of the Apparition at Fatima NEXT WEEKEND In this historic year of the Fatima Centennial ( ), the world is at an historic crossroad. Yes, we must listen to our Lady s request if we hope to enjoy God s blessings. He will hear us if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That is why we are doing the 2017 Public Square Rosary Crusade. 3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY Mare Draper, DRE or by phone: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION HAS STARTED with an AWESOME Ice Cream Social and Meet and Greet! Did you miss it? Registration for Fall is available ONLINE on our website! Can t register online? Call the RE Office and we will gladly help you! Please note: If you are in parochial school and are in a sacrament year (2 nd or 9 th ), please register for Sacramental prep online as well. This will help us order materials in a timely fashion! Thank you! There are still a few openings on Sunday for Pre-School and Kindergartners, Tuesday Evenings and the GIFT Program. Mondays are officially closed! Sunday: 10-11am, Tuesdays: 6-7:30pm. GIFT: Wednesday, October 11: 6-7:30pm. Save the Date: First Reconciliation Parent Meeting will be held during Religious Education on Monday/ Tuesday October 23/24 th from 6:15-7:30pm. High School/Confirmation 2018 Just a friendly reminder that 9 th grade Religious Education is required for all students anticipating the reception of the Confirmation in If you are not attending a Catholic high school and you are in 9 th grade, you need to be enrolled in our program. Please register online there are options if you think there may be an issue due to sports/school activities! Confirmation 2018 Confirmation 2018 Registration is OPEN and On-Line!. If you attend Catholic school and plan to receive the Sacrament in Fall 2018, you need to register in our program. The registration link is Click Confirmation 2018 and fill out the information. If you attend public, private or a charter school, you should be already registered in our Religious Education program and completed the Sacramental portion of the registration at that time. If you want to confirm your registration, please contact our office or us at rgarland@holyfamilynewark.org. (Please keep in mind that Confirmation is in addition to the religious education classes in our parish. If you attend Catholic school, religious education is not required; however, you are always welcome to join the RE classes with your peers. This is a great way to bond with your fellow Confirmandi well before the program begins. (Worth thinking about!) This Sunday, October 8th is Children s Liturgy of the Word. This Liturgy will be held 2 nd Sunday of each month November March (excluding the month of December). Fall Fest Volunteers are needed to make the event a huge success. If you are in 6 th grade and older, you can be the person who makes a difference! 4 Parish News and Happenings SILENT PRAYER: Our parish has a group of people who will earnestly pray for any needs you have. This is done anonymously via a telephone prayer chain. If you have a special need for which you are in need of prayer call: or before 7:30 p.m. and we will pray for you. October 8, 2017 Reflecting on this week s gospel, I can t help to think about how we treat others. While we may not be as physically violent as the tenants in this parable, we certainly can hurt others through more than just physical violence. We should remember that all that has been provided to us is from the Lord. These gifts go beyond just material possessions; they also include the world we live in and all those that live upon it. As you reflect on this truth this week contemplate how well you are treating these gifts that the Lord has provided you? Do you treat all with dignity and respect? In what way can you do a better job of showing love to your neighbors? In what way can you do a better job of caring for our Earth? MASS AT THE SHRINE OF SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church (Old Bohemia) in Warwick, MD on Sunday, October 22 at 4:00 pm. This is the last Mass scheduled at this historic shrine in Fr. Richard Jasper, the most recent priest ordained in the Diocese of Wilmington, will be the celebrant. A first-class relic of St. Francis Xavier, on loan from Geoff and Dorcas Gamble, will be available for veneration after the service.
