2 Information/New Member Class: Pastor Herman is teaching an information/new member class on Mondays at 5:30pm. The class is open to anyone and explains what the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod teaches and believes. Contact Pastor Herman at for more information. Kitchen Cleaning/Work Day: The LWML is sponsoring a work day on Saturday, August 6, 9:00am to deep clean and reorganize the church kitchen. Everyone is encouraged to come and help out, and if we have many volunteers, the cleaning should not take too long. 50 th Wedding Anniversary Celebration: Members and friends are invited to join in the celebration of the 50 th wedding anniversary of Jean and Michael Bristol at an open house on Saturday, August 13, 1:00-4:00pm on the grounds of the Lew Wallace Study, 200 Wallace Avenue, Crawfordsville, IN. Host Families Needed: Christian host families are needed to house students from a Chinese language school, who will be visiting Purdue from August The students speak English and have their own transportation. They are interested in learning more about American culture and are open to attending church services with the host family. If you might be willing to house a student or chaperone, please contact Anne Qu at AnneQu928@gmail.com. Rides for Visually Impaired Person: A visually impaired person is looking for a female who might be willing to provide rides for her to and from campus Monday through Friday beginning the week of August 15 th, as well as run occasional errands with her. She is willing to pay $20 a week and requests that the driver be able to accommodate her guide dog. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact the church office at ulutheranchurch@gmail.com or let Pastor Herman know. Pastor Out of Town: Pastor Herman will be out of town from approximately August 3-11, and we thank Pastor Mike Bristol for preaching on August 7. 3 Bible Study Opportunities: The following Bible studies are meeting throughout the week. New people are always welcome! Sunday Morning Bible Class 9:15am Study and discuss Scripture with others before Sunday morning worship in this class, led by Pastor Herman, looking at the Small Catechism. Monday Evening Bible Study 7:00pm Look in depth at the Augsburg Confession in this class, led by Pastor Herman or Pastor Barton. LCMS U Thursdays, 7:00pm WILL NOT MEET OVER THE SUMMER Come meet other students and study God s Word at the LCMS U led by Pastor Herman, featuring an open discussion and an opportunity to hear what God s Word says about issues in our world today. Men s Breakfast/Bible Class Fridays, 6:00am Join us for a Men s Breakfast/Bible Class at the Downtowner Restaurant located in the Market Square Shopping Center in Lafayette. Conversation Class Mondays, 9:15am WILL NOT MEET AGAIN UNTIL MID-AUGUST This class is for students, visiting scholars, and spouses, and covers word pronunciation, idioms, and American holidays. English Conversation/Current Events This class meets for one hour to read current news and information items, and discuss meanings of words and cultural differences. Soles4Souls Shoe Collection Update: We are continuing to collect all kinds of shoes for needy people around the world. Please donate your gently used or new shoes in the box downstairs to help this worthwhile cause. Thanks to Amy Leineweber for making a trip to the Tennessee Soles4Souls warehouse recently with 454 pairs of donated shoes, and to Nancy Maylath for securing a Thrivent grant to purchase many pairs of shoes! Water Bottle Collection: We are still collecting 16.9 fl. oz. water bottles for Food Finders Food Bank. The bottles are used to distribute laundry soap, and Food Finders currently uses about 2,100 bottles per month. Please deposit the bottles, uncrushed with the lid, in our collection container downstairs. Pocket Change Sunday July 31: The LWML is sponsoring monthly Pocket Change Sundays, encouraging people to bring in coins to donate for mission projects. Please plan to bring in your spare change on July 31 for our next collection. We also thank everyone who has already given change in previous weeks. We appreciate your generosity! Car for Sale: A previous attendee of our international Bible study has moved to San Diego, California with her husband, who serves in the U.S. Navy, and is offering her car for sale. The car is a blue 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT V-6 SE, 6-speed manual with 122,900 miles, and the asking price is $5200. For more information, contact Anne Qu at annequ928@gmail.com. International Friendship Program: Join the International Friendship Program (IFP) at Purdue as a volunteer and be the first to welcome a new international student arriving in August. Commitment is for one semester. Get together with your student 3 or 4 times. Families, couples and singles are welcome! Orientation is Wednesday, July 27, 12:10pm to 12:50pm just enough time to fit in during lunch break in Young Hall, Room 101. Parking passes to Grant Street parking garage given at the session! Welcome to our newest members! Hi, we re Steve, Colette, and Jacqueline Eversole, and we re happy to be new members of University Lutheran! We have been attending St. James since the 1990 s, and began worshipping at University Lutheran in December of last year. Just a few quick words about our family. In 1992 Steve married Colette, graduated from Purdue, and began working at Subaru of Indiana Automotive. Steve continues to work at SIA, primarily as a Staff Engineer in Quality. Colette is a stay-at-home mom, who enjoys playing the violin and taking care of our 3 pets (1 dog and 2 cats). Jacqueline is in her 3 rd year of volunteering at Columbian Park Zoo. She is also attending an online charter high school, and plans to study Psychology at Purdue in order to ultimately work with animals at a marine facility or park for her career. We look forward to being a part of the ULU family! 4 Men s Retreat at Camp Arcadia: Camp Arcadia, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, will again be hosting the 71 st Annual LLL Men s Retreat on September 8-11, Golfing, softball, and featured speaker Pastor Ken Klaus, Retired Lutheran Hour Speaker will highlight the 3-day retreat. Evangelism Conference: An Evangelism Conference will be held at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon on September 9 and 10 with the theme of Confessing Christ in a Contrary Culture. Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Rast, Jr., President of Concordia Theological Seminary, will be the keynote speaker. Rev. Hesham Shehab from Chicago will be one of the plenary speakers talking on Reaching Out to the Muslims and Chaplain Paul Lepley will be another plenary speaker talking about Reaching out to the Military Families. The cost per person is $45.00, which will include a dinner on Friday night and lunch on Saturday. After August 26, 2016 registration costs will be $55.00 per person. Radio Show: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL and hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken. You can listen at your convenience at and on the Lutheran Public Radio mobile app. Lutheran Hour Broadcast: When non- Christians pressure Christians to keep quiet on any given topic, we can retreat, push back, or choose to endure (Acts 5:27-34). In next week s broadcast of The Lutheran Hour, Speaker Emeritus Pastor Ken Klaus shares with his audience what is the right path to pursue in a sermon entitled Bullies. 5 Matrix SuperHero 5K: Matrix LifeCare Center will sponsor a 5K run, 2K walk, and costume contest on August 20 at Columbian Park Rush Pavilion. Volunteers are needed to help with the event, as well as runners and teams to assist with fundraising. For more information, visit Exchange Student Hosts Needed: Open your heart and home to a Lutheran exchange student from Germany for the coming school year. Volunteer host families (with or without children) as well as single people are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for the coming school year, one or two semesters, starting in August. EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. It is not too late to apply. Christ Academy at CTSFW: College students who are contemplating how they might serve the Church have a great option with Christ Academy/Phoebe Academy College taking place October 20 23, This event affords attendees the opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day life at CTSFW. Days will be filled with classes led by extraordinary CTSFW faculty, worship with the CTSFW community in Kramer Chapel, plenty of time to ask questions of our Admission staff and social time with fellow attendees. 6 Operation Christmas Child: Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is an organization that spreads the message of God to people throughout the world with the help of a simple shoebox full of fun and practical items. Please go to for more information and a complete list of items that are approved to put in the shoeboxes. Also check out the table with brochures from OCC at church. University Lutheran Church has been helping with this project for many years. We continue this year with the hope of reaching our goal of at least 150 boxes. To meet this goal, we need your help (collecting items, filling boxes, transporting them and praying for them). We encourage you to challenge each other, your families and the organizations you associate with to bring in the most boxes. Throughout the next months we will be having a collection for donations for Operation Christmas Child. We will have monthly suggestions of items to bring in, but other items and financial donations are welcome at any time.
