You may contact the church office at or in case of a pastoral need during Pastor Herman s absence. 50 th Wedding Anniversary Celebration: Members and friends are invited to join in the celebration of the 50 th wedding anniversary of Jean and Michael Bristol at an open house on Saturday, August 13, 1:00-4:00pm on the grounds of the Lew Wallace Study, 200 Wallace Avenue, Crawfordsville, IN. Welcome Back Church Service & Blast-Off Picnic: Please join us on Sunday, August 21, 10:30am for our annual Welcome Back Church Service, immediately followed by the Blast-Off Picnic, featuring free food and a chance to meet other students at ULu. We also need volunteers to bring in food for the picnic. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board in the hallyway, or you can sign up online at: Ice Cream Social & Game Night: Come by the church on Thursday, August 25, 7:00pm for our Ice Cream Social & Game Night. Enjoy free ice cream, play games, and make new friends! Sunday Evening Services Resume August 21: Beginning August 21, we will once again offer both the 10:30am worship service as well as the 7:00pm worship service. Please join us often! Get Involved! Call-outs and initial meetings for Bible studies, choir, altar guild, and other church activities will take place during the next few weeks. Check the church calendar for details at B-Involved Fair: If you are on campus on Saturday, August 20, be sure to stop by our LCMS-U booth at Purdue s B-Involved fair from 3-5pm at the Purdue Memorial Mall. LWML Meeting: All women are encouraged to attend our first LWML meeting of the semester on Wednesday, August 24, 7:00pm. We will be planning events for the upcoming year and discussing service projects and volunteering activities we would like to do. We would love to have new people join us! 3 Bible Study Opportunities: The following Bible studies are meeting throughout the week. New people are always welcome! Sunday Morning Bible Class 9:15am Study and discuss Scripture with others before Sunday morning worship in this class, led by Pastor Herman, looking at the Small Catechism. Monday Evening Bible Study 7:00pm Look in depth at the Augsburg Confession in this class, led by Pastor Herman or Pastor Barton. LCMS U Thursdays, 7:00pm Resumes September 1 Come meet other students and study God s Word at the LCMS U led by Pastor Herman, featuring an open discussion and an opportunity to hear what God s Word says about issues in our world today. Men s Breakfast/Bible Class Fridays, 6:00am Join us for a Men s Breakfast/Bible Class at the Downtowner Restaurant located in the Market Square Shopping Center in Lafayette. Dinner and International Bible Study Sundays, 5:00pm Pastor Herman leads a Bible study following a free meal. Currently we are reading about different biblical heroes of the Christian faith. Conversation Class Mondays, 9:15am WILL NOT MEET IN AUGUST This class is for students, visiting scholars, and spouses, and covers word pronunciation, idioms, and American holidays. English Conversation/Current Events This class meets for one hour to read current news and information items, and discuss meanings of words and cultural differences. The class will not meet regularly over the summer; however, if you are interested in attending, contact Yogi Yergler at purdueyy@gmail.com for schedule details. 10 Information/New Member Class: Pastor Herman is teaching an information/new member class on Mondays at 5:30pm. The class is open to anyone and explains what the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod teaches and believes. Contact Pastor Herman at pastorherman@icloud.com for more information. Soles4Souls Shoe Collection Update: We are continuing to collect all kinds of shoes for needy people around the world. Please donate your gently used or new shoes in the box downstairs to help this worthwhile cause. Thanks to Amy Leineweber for making a trip to the Tennessee Soles4Souls warehouse recently with 454 pairs of donated shoes, and to Nancy Maylath for securing a Thrivent grant to purchase many pairs of shoes! Water Bottle Collection: We are still collecting 16.9 fl. oz. water bottles for Food Finders Food Bank. The bottles are used to distribute laundry soap, and Food Finders currently uses about 2,100 bottles per month. Please deposit the bottles, uncrushed with the lid, in our collection container downstairs. Pocket Change Sunday August 28: The LWML is sponsoring monthly Pocket Change Sundays, encouraging people to bring in coins to donate for mission projects. Please plan to bring in your spare change on August 28 for our next collection. We also thank everyone who has already given change in previous weeks. We appreciate your generosity! Car for Sale: A previous attendee of our international Bible study has moved to San Diego, California with her husband, who serves in the U.S. Navy, and is offering her car for sale. The car is a blue 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT V-6 SE, 6-speed manual with 122,900 miles, and the asking price is $5200. For more information, contact Anne Qu at annequ928@gmail.com. Ordination/Installation of Toby Schmidt: We pray God s rich blessings for Toby Schmidt, who served as campus missionary and worked out of University Lutheran from , and who was ordained and installed as Associate Pastor at Cross View Lutheran Church in Edina, Minnesota on Sunday, July 24. 4 Volunteer Drivers Needed: The Office of International Programs at Purdue is sponsoring a free shuttle service staffed by volunteers. From August volunteer drivers meet airport shuttles from Indianapolis and Chicago when they arrive at the Purdue Memorial Union. Drivers then offer to take new international students to their residence halls or to off-campus housing (because they will be coming with a lot of luggage). Interested drivers must view the following video: Volunteers must also fill out an approval form and online van training quiz. Volunteers Needed to Check in International Students: The Office of International Programs at Purdue is looking for volunteers to help with checking in international students from August Volunteers are needed to assist with directing students to different parts of the process of checking in with their passport and visa documents. Sign up online at: International Friendship Program: Join the International Friendship Program (IFP) at Purdue as a volunteer and be the first to welcome a new international student. The commitment for a host with students is one semester. If you get to be friends and want to continue past the semester that is fine, but meeting 3-4 times during the semester with a student is really doable. If people can take two students it is actually easier. If you are willing to take more than two that is great too! Families, couples and singles are welcome. Host Families Needed: Christian host families are needed to house students from a Chinese language school, who will be visiting Purdue from August The students speak English and have their own transportation. They are interested in learning more about American culture and are open to attending church services with the host family. Men s Retreat at Camp Arcadia: Camp Arcadia, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, will again be hosting the 71 st Annual LLL Men s Retreat on September 8-11, Golfing, softball, and featured speaker Pastor Ken Klaus, Retired Lutheran Hour Speaker will highlight the 3-day retreat. Scholarships are available, so check out the informational poster and registration brochures located on the hall bulletin board or contact Jerry Hogue at jehogue@hotmail.com / (cell) for more details. Evangelism Conference: An Evangelism Conference will be held at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon on September 9 and 10 with the theme of Confessing Christ in a Contrary Culture. Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Rast, Jr., President of Concordia Theological Seminary, will be the keynote speaker. Rev. Hesham Shehab from Chicago will be one of the plenary speakers talking on Reaching Out to the Muslims and Chaplain Paul Lepley will be another plenary speaker talking about Reaching out to the Military Families. The cost per person is $45.00, which will include a dinner on Friday night and lunch on Saturday. After August 26, 2016 registration costs will be $55.00 per person. Radio Show: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL and hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken. This week's topics include: The "For You" of Biblical Christianity, Mary Mother of Jesus, The Temptation of Jesus, Sexual Morality in a Christless World and more. You can listen to what you want when you want at and on the Lutheran Public Radio mobile app. Lutheran Hour Broadcast: Continuing the "August Archives" broadcasts of The Lutheran Hour, next week s sermon is entitled In Spite of Everything. Pastor Gregory Seltz preaches another classic sermon by Dr. Oswald Hoffmann, based on Romans 8:28. The Lutheran Hour is heard every Sunday in our listening area at 7am (720 AM); 7:30am (97.3 FM); 9:04am (107.7 FM); and 10am (97.3 FM). 4 9

5 Matrix SuperHero 5K: Matrix LifeCare Center will sponsor a 5K run, 2K walk, and costume contest on August 20 at Columbian Park Rush Pavilion. Volunteers are needed to help with the event, as well as runners and teams to assist with fundraising. Owned and operated by the LCMS, KFUO offers an array of audio resources from worship services to inspirational music to indepth study of God's Word through programs including "The Bible Study," "Ask the Pastor," "Studio A," and "Law & Gospel. Christ Academy at CTSFW: College students who are contemplating how they might serve the Church have a great option with Christ Academy/Phoebe Academy College taking place October 20 23, This event affords attendees the opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day life at CTSFW. Days will be filled with classes led by extraordinary CTSFW faculty, worship with the CTSFW community in Kramer Chapel, plenty of time to ask questions of our Admission staff and social time with fellow attendees. One way is to tell them about the Prayerfully Consider Visit which takes place on the CTSFW campus October 13 15, During this three-day event they will have the opportunity to experience daily life at the Seminary while worshiping with the CTSFW community, attending classes, meeting with faculty, learning about financial aid options and getting to know the Fort Wayne area. Indiana District Youth Gathering: The Indiana District Youth Gathering will take place November at St. Peter s Lutheran Church, Columbus. The theme for the gathering is based on Ephesians 4:1-6, focusing on ONE. The guest speaker is LCMS Pastor James Gomez, and music will be provided by Adam Cappa and his band. The event will feature a variety of Bible studies, songs, fellowship, and service. More information and a registration form are posted on the bulletin board in the hallway. 5

6 Operation Christmas Child: Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is an organization that spreads the message of God to people throughout the world with the help of a simple shoebox full of fun and practical items. Please go to for more information and a complete list of items that are approved to put in the shoeboxes. Also check out the table with brochures from OCC at church. University Lutheran Church has been helping with this project for many years. We continue this year with the hope of reaching our goal of at least 150 boxes. To meet this goal, we need your help (collecting items, filling boxes, transporting them and praying for them). We encourage you to challenge each other, your families and the organizations you associate with to bring in the most boxes. Throughout the next months we will be having a collection for donations for Operation Christmas Child. We will have monthly suggestions of items to bring in, but other items and financial donations are welcome at any time. In January 2013, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Campus Ministry rolled out LCMS U, an initiative to connect and support Lutheran students as they head off to college and face countless challenges to their biblical worldview, doctrine, ethics, and practices. Currently, there are 175 LCMS U chapters around the country, and University Lutheran is one of them! To learn more about the work of LCMS U, visit Higher Things Youth Retreat: Higher Things will sponsor a youth retreat September at St. John s Lutheran Church, Columbia City, Indiana. The theme is Being Christian in an Adult World, and the guest speaker is Pastor Peter Ill. Cost is $25 per person, and you may register online at higherthings.org/retreats/registrations. Worship for Shut-Ins: Worship for Shut-Ins is a 30 minute Lutheran television worship service. It includes the readings for the day, prayers, and a Lutheran pastor delivering a message that is one-on-one to the viewer. The program airs Sundays at 10:00am on WHMB-TV40. Sunday Worship Schedule: Bible Class, 9:15am Morning Worship, 10:30am (Communion: 1 st, 3 rd, 5 th Sundays of the month) Evening Worship, 7:00pm (Beginning August 21) (Communion: 2 nd, 4 th Sundays of the month) Office Hours: The church office is open Monday to Friday, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
