3 September 7, 2014 ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL? Robert George is a professor of jurisprudence at Princeton and is not one to mince words. In May of this year he spoke at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. and entitled his talk Ashamed of the Gospel? One of his great points is that we will not be judged by history but by God. He is talking about the fact that you often hear people talk about the judgment of history and the passage of time. This seems to be their concern: how things will appear later on. The concern should be how does this or that issue measure up to the law of God. Just this morning (Thursday) I listened to a radio talk show in which one of the hosts mentioned that the public s opinion on a certain issue had changed a great deal in the past ten years. Of course, he is absolutely right. The public has a very flexible attitude towards any number of moral questions and is rather easily convinced along the path of least resistance. People do not want to be thought of as behind the times or outdated. It is sad to note that any number of older people who used to have rather firmly held moral convictions have now been brought along by the tide. They want to be considered to be with it. They absolutely hate the idea of being outdated or old fashioned. They make the point that the young people do this or that and pay little or no attention to the moral standards of the past. Even some good Catholics at times claim that while many college students may have vastly different moral ideas, these same students are active in works of charity and social justice. Some feel that even if you don t go to Mass or worry about the commandments, it s ok as long as you are charitable. Charity is the great law of the Gospel, but it does not eradicate or dispense with the Ten Commandments. For example, it is fantastic to go on a mission trip or do some other wonderful work of Christian love, but it is still necessary to attend Mass and obey the other commandments. The Holy Eucharist is absolutely central to the faith and is the sacrament of charity. As a matter of fact, those who receive Holy Communion are by that very fact urged on to works of love in imitation of Christ. We need not be too worried about public opinion, but we have to be careful that we always have the mind of Christ. We must love God and our neighbor if you fail to do one you really don t do justice to the Gospel.

4 At the same time, as Robert George said so well in May, we must never be ashamed of the Gospel in its fullness. If we are, Christ will be ashamed of us. We must never be afraid to declare the truth even if it make us uncomfortable. Today there is a tremendous amount of political correctness: going along with almost anything so as not to offend almost anyone. Being quiet about the Gospel is not a virtue! Jesus put it this way: When the Pharisees were upset because Jesus disciples were acclaiming Him as the Messiah, Jesus replied: If these (the disciples) were quiet, the very stones would cry out. ( St Luke 19:40) Catholics cannot be quiet about the truth! Cardinal O Connor had a great line about political correctness. He put it this way. Political correctness is not worth a comma in the Apostles Creed. He was so right. In Jesus and Mary, T H E C A T H O L I C U N I V E R S I T Y O F A M E R I C A C O L L E C T I O N The Catholic University of America, located in Washington D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. Some of our own diocesan priests have received education and have specialized in different ecclesiastical courses and are now serving our Diocese. Next week (September 13th/14th) is the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Every dollar given directly supports aid for students from dioceses across the country, including our diocese. Please be generous. Am I my brother s keeper? All three readings today suggest that for the Christian steward, the answer is Yes! STEWARDSHIP 09/01/13 $28,631 08/31/14 $25,420 (-11.03%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. 6 FRIENDS OF SAINT AIDAN (FOSA) SECOND COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 6TH/7TH Friends of St. Aidan is a fund that was established with the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to those families who are not able to pay for Catholic Education at Saint Aidan School only. These are members of our Saint Aidan School family that are being faced with the difficult decision of leaving the school because of a traumatic event (job loss, family problems, etc.) in their lives that makes paying for a Catholic Education impossible. The reason we established FOSA is due to two factors; 1-The Diocese Tomorrow s Hope Fund has been depleted and more families are looking toward it than ever before to help pay for Catholic Education. 2-We can no longer pass the burden on to the other families in the school. Perhaps you might consider a donation as a memorial to a loved one. At a time of loss many families inquire about memorial donations to our school and our parish. This is a wonderful opportunity to memorialize a loved one. We have memorial cards that are sent to the families of the person for whom the memorial has been purchased acknowledging the gift. The funds we raise will only go to those families in need as determined by the Pastor and Principal. Donations envelopes are available in church and in the Rectory office. For information please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104. If you can t feed a hundred people, than feed just one Mother Theresa Make a difference. Make the hope and dream of Catholic Education a reality. Make a donation. Thank you and God Bless! MAY WE HAVE YOUR ADDRESS? In an effort to improve communication with our parishioners, please send us your address so that we can keep everyone up-to-date on important events that might occur from time to time in between Sunday bulletins. Please it to Rosemarym@staidanparish.org.

12 Catholics for Freedom of Religion Preserving Freedom for All We enter another year to live our Mission to educate and advocate for our 1 st Amendment Right to Freedom of Religion. Monthly meetings will continue; please consider joining us in this important Mission. Why is it important to be informed and aware? Because our religious liberty is being chipped away and it needs to be front and center. Examples of this chipping are myriad the closing of Catholic adoption agencies because they believe that every child deserves a mother and a father ministries being told they can t minister to the poor unless they advocate and refer for abortion, and, of course, the government trying to force people of faith to violate their consciences through the HHS mandate in the health care bill. Religious Liberty is a God-given right, and one that must not be taken away on any level.usccb Ad Hoc Com. for Religious Freedom As students stock their backpacks, they need to be prepared with knowledge of their religious liberty rights. Several incidents of schools banning Bless You in response to a sneeze have occurred this year. For example, a Georgia college assistant professor will give students a 1% deduction to their final grade for each occurrence if the phrase slips out which is unlawful. 16 SYMBOLON I am very excited to present to you a program which will enrich our parish. The name of the program is SYMBOLON: The Catholic Faith Explained. The program can be accessed at any time via the web through a computer, smartphone, or tablet. It is a state-ofthe-art video series led by a team of dynamic teachers who provide a clear and comprehensive explanation of the Catholic faith. Filmed on location in Rome, the Holy Land, and Calcutta, it journeys through the core teachings of the Catholic faith and aims to educate adults and young people about their faith and how to bear witness to Christ in their daily lives. Here are some of the ways that Symbolon could be used in St Aidan: RCIA Catechumenate and Dismissal Sessions Catechist Training Small Christian Communities Pre-Cana Before/After Mass Bible Studies Individual Families: as an in-home tool to help parents to educate their children in the Faith Baptism Program I know SYMBOLON will be an invaluable resource for our parish and I would like to explain, in detail, all the wonderful features this program brings. If you are interested in learning how to participate and implement this faith formation program for St. Aidan Parish please contact me at or at toticon@aol.com. I thank you in advance for your participation as we seek to transform the world for Christ and His Church! Toti Conforti SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER When you go to Mass, look around to find new people you have not seen before, say hello and invite them for coffee after Mass. If they refuse, just explain how nice is to make friends with people of the same faith! Maybe next time they will say yes. This month there are many different programs we can participate in our Church, check the bulletin or ask a member of a ministry for one that would interest you. It will deepen your relationship with Christ and transform the way you live your Faith. Try to bring a neighbor with you or a friend that would not otherwise be able to come. Share your reactions and feedback at (516) x9101. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

18 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Today I was ready to start experiencing nice, cool, autumn weather, and we are having a 90 degree day! I hope when you read this note it will be back to normal, enjoying 70 s! September is such a nice month, the month dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, which we commemorate the 15 th of this month; also on the 8 th we celebrate the birth of our Blessed Mother. Many others commemorations fall in this month: on the 14 th is the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, on the 29 th we remember the Holy Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Mother Theresa on the 5 th and Padre Pio on the 23rd. WOW!! How many saints to pray for all our needs. Many times I confide that I love Pope Francis and I try to read all his commentaries daily. One that was very interesting is the follow: How many of us, myself included, have lost our bearings, we are no longer attentive to the world in which we live, we do not care, we do not protect what God created for everyone and we end up unable even to care for one another. Pope Francis How truth this is! This week I decided to bring a few challenging CDs Contraception, Cracking the Myths by Prof. Janet Smith. This talk includes a lot of research on the subject of contraception, couples living together before marriage, etc. You will learn things you never knew about what contraception is doing to relationships, to female bodies, and to the environment, all of which is never presented or discussed by doctors or the media and so most people are completely in the dark about what they may be doing that is so harmful. If you believe in being informed before making life-altering decisions, you should listen to this talk. Pass it to other couples you know. Prove it God.and He did by Patty Schneir. This is a personal testimony by Patty about how she believed herself to be a good practicing Catholic and yet rejected the Church s teachings against the use of contraception, until one day she was challenged about on a talk she heard in a parish mission. In her prayer that followed that mission, along with the reading of Scripture, over a period of time, God showed her through Scripture and through her study of Theology of the Body about the truth of Church teachings on this subject. Green Sex: the Case for Natural Family Planning - Jason Evert- If sex is natural, why are we so eager to make it artificial? In this presentation, Jason presents the case for Natural Family Planning as he unveils the beauty of God s plan for sexuality. The best gift to a couple to be married or recently married! There are CDs truly informative, listen to them and give them away. You will help people to have a real encounter with Christ and help our parish in its plan of Evangelization. May the Lord bless your efforts! Toti Conforti The Booster Club is administered by The Saint Aidan s School Board. All proceeds will directly benefit the school. ** Join now for the new school year! ** $30 Annual Membership runs September August chances to win every month Prizes Weekly Monthly 1 $25 1 $50 4 $20 2 $25 Monthly Bonus Prizes $100 in January, February, April, May, July, August, September, October and November $500 in March, June and December Name Phone Address City, State, Zip address I would like numbers at $30 each. $ enclosed Make all checks payable to Saint Aidan s Booster Club and return to the Rectory office.
