2 Page 2 Herald Volume 37 Issue 11 Discipleship Ministries gathered to grow Book Discussion November 12 9:00am (Note Date Change to 2 nd Saturday) Join Hosanna s monthly book discussion for lively discussions along with coffee and treats. Discussions are normally the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 am, but in November we will be meeting on the second Saturday due to other activities. The book to be discussed on November 12 is Something From the Oven by Laura Shapiro. Ms. Shapiro deconstructs food from the '50s and the industry that foisted it on American households. She describes how some foods developed for soldiers during World War II were successfully transplanted into the home, while others died unappetizing deaths. Join the book group for a discussion of this very informative book. The book discussion group will not meet in December. The next meeting will be on January 21 and the book to be discussed will be The Girl on the Train by Paul Hawkins. You may contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net with questions or for more info. Young Adult Care Packages Young adults (approx years old) transitioning to college, the work force, military or other positions are encouraged to visit the Young Adult page on our website. If interested, fill out your current contact information and let us know if you'd like to receive a small care package. 3 gathered to grow Discipleship Ministries Herald Volume 37 Issue 11 Page 3 The Confirmation ministry is in full swing! We appreciate the willingness of our Confirmation small group leaders (Kelly Gangelhoff, Wonda Moehnke and Stephanie Stevens) as we continue learning/growing our faith through service, study and fellowship. So far this fall, we have had time to study and learn about Martin Luther and the Reformation. Theme questions that we ve pondered include: If we follow Jesus, why do we call ourselves Lutherans? Since the church is so divided, I don t understand how the Reformation could be a good thing. I don t know how just one person like Martin Luther could totally change the church. Additionally, our group has served and enjoyed s o m e f e l l o w s h i p together. In October the group prepared 27 meals for Susan s Suppers (thanks to families for their food donations) and also helped make more fleece hats for the Mittens and More outreach. Later this month, the group will be helping with the meal for our 9th grade Confirmands and will help to pack our young adult care packages. Thank you to all who support this ministry in so many various ways. Advent Devotional Booklet 2016 Hosanna has a wonderful tradition of members writing daily devotions for the season of Advent and Christmas. Please sign-up at the information desk for one or more of the dates. A Bible verse based on the theme of service is assigned for each day. Deadline for the devotions is November 11th. You can send these to jodi.solum@hosannalutheran.org or drop them off in the office. Pastor s Evening Bible Study Pastor s evening Bible study is on Thursdays. This year we are studying the Books of Jeremiah & Lamentations. Jeremiah was a prophet from 626 BC though 587 BC. This covers the period when Babylon took control of Judah until the Temple was destroyed and the people were taken in to captivity in Babylon. The studies will be on Thursday nights at 6:30. Bible study will not meet on Thursday, November 24th due to the Thanksgiving holiday. 5 gathered to grow Music Ministries Herald Volume 37 Issue 11 Page 5 Why Attend Worship? Once again I (Nancy Wales) have seen a chart that shows the decline of church attendance across the nation during the last 20 plus years. These polls or surveys always raise questions about the decline. Are people too disheartened with religious institutions? Is there too much cynicism in our culture about having faith? Are people less connected to nature in their daily lives and the mysteries of creation and their Creator than they were 50 years ago? Is it because there is no longer a designated worship time in our culture since other organizations and businesses offer many other things to do on Sunday mornings? Do career and work responsibilities affect availability to attend worship services? With extended families living farther apart, does that influence the number of weekends people are traveling? Is emphasis on God being pushed to the background rather than being front and center? The list could go on. So why take the time to worship? Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton, the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, wrote an article entitled Worship is the heart of all we do in the May 2015 edition of The Lutheran. Below are some excerpts which answer this question:..we are church. At the heart of what we do is worship, and at the heart of our worship is the crucified and risen Christ. Everything else we do is formed, nourished, sustained and transformed by our life as a faith community gathered around word and sacrament, abiding in the love of God. Without this intentional, regular communion with God and each other it s not possible for us to speak an authentic word of hope to a broken world the world God so loves. When we gather for worship we hear God s word of promise; we confess our helplessness; receive forgiveness; we pray; and we welcome new brothers and sisters through baptism, promising to support them in their walk in faith. We are fed with the bread of life and receive our Lord poured out for us. And then we are sent back into the world. Worship is essential for the church s life and service... Most of all we should come to worship expecting to be changed. We are touching, tasting, feeling, hearing and seeing the one who knows us and loves us completely. Our lives are restored. We are set free. Fed for the journey we are set loose to go in peace and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. "Snowed In"... in November What's your favorite thing about getting snowed in? Baking cookies or making warm soup? Playing games or working on puzzles? Watching a good movie with great snacks? Sledding or building a fort? Hosanna is putting together a silent auction basket with the theme "Snowed In" for the annual fall concert at Bethel Lutheran Church on Friday, November 18 to benefit Family Promise of Rochester. The benefit concert is one of Family Promises biggest fund raisers and this is the first year they are having a silent auction with the concert. So please consider contributing something for the basket--it could be big or small. Depending on what we receive, we may put together more than one basket! ("Snowed In" AGAIN!) We will be taking "Snowed In" items now until Sunday, November 13th. Donations may be dropped off in the designated area in the gathering area. Susan s Suppers Thanksgiving season is the perfect time to give thanks with a grateful heart to all the volunteers helping with Susan s Suppers. You are truly appreciated and much needed. 10 Page 10 Herald Volume 37 Issue 11 Hello, On Saturday, September 24th, Pastor Meiers, Sonja, & Chris Meiers, and my wife Terri and I participated in the 3rd annual Bishop's 5 K Walk /Run. It was very rewarding to be part of this event with over 130 participants. Bishop Delzer participated and emphasized how We can make a difference by Moving Together to Finish Hunger. This year s goal was to raise $10,000 to benefit Channel One and Echo Food Shelves. Donations DO change lives: President s Message $720 (feeds four families for one year) $180 (feeds one family for one year) $45 (feeds an individual for one year) $1, (feeds six families for one year) Every $1 donated to Channel One Regional Food Bank, can provide enough food for four meals. There are so many wonderful ministries we have that help support people in our community and aid in fighting hunger. Our Hosanna monthly food pantry, Caring & Sharing Basket, Susan s Suppers, Family Promise, Thanksgiving meals, and annual ELCA fundraisers are ways in which we as a congregation are Moving Together to Finish Hunger. You can make prayers to end hunger a part of your regular prayer life. When you pray, Give us this day our daily bread, include people who are hungry in our community, country, and around the world. President Ray Ashworth Many Thanks Your caring words, prayers for healing, cards, Susan s Supper, and other meals have brightened my days as my injuries heal from the fall I took. Steve and I are richly blessed to have such a caring and faithful church family. Nan Peters
11 Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 37 Issue 11 Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, Paul tells us, Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice (Phillipians 4:4). How can we but rejoice when we remember that we are created to be God s children, that in Christ, we are reclaimed and forgiven, that God protects us from all danger and guards and keeps us from all evil. To rejoice in God and God s gifts is to know real joy. Joy is not completed when only receiving. We give because God first gave. The Lord s loving and giving are contagious. We are caught up in response. We then know a double joy of receiving and giving. If we don t have fun as Christians, and appear to be stodgy and dull, it is probably because we let fear and anxiety keep us on the borders of the kingdom. We don t plunge into the deep. We are like swimmers who have ventured into the lake, wading out with caution, testing the waters, standing there up to our knees, looking back longingly at the people basking in the sun on the beach or looking wistfully to the real swimmers who are swimming in the deep. The widow with her two copper coins (Mark 12:42) had fun. Jesus implied that in giving her little gift out of her poverty she had more joy than those who gave only what they could easily spare. Zacchaeus made the plunge (Luke 19: 1-10). Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold. And Jesus commented, Today salvation has come to this house. Zacchaeus was frolicking in the deep. The cluster of early followers found a new joy. They held all things in common and distributed to the poor. (Acts 2:44-45) Our congregation s worship theme for November is entitled: Sent to Serve with Our Treasure. We are called as disciples of Jesus to share a portion of what we have been given for the purpose of sharing the gospel and caring for those in need. Stewardship, then is a matter of utilizing the gifts we have for the work of God s Kingdom. Our need to give is fulfilled in two ways: by giving in response to God s goodness to us, and by giving as a tangible response to the needs of the world. Thus we are blessed in giving as in receiving. Please prayerfully consider your support of Christ s mission through the ministry of Hosanna Lutheran Church. Estimate of Giving for 2017 will be received at both worship services on November 20. May God bring joy to your life as you share your blessings with the world.
