Confirmation Wednesday night Confirmation sessions for Hosanna's current 7th/8th graders came to an end on Wednesday, May 18th. On this last evening, the group joined together with family members, small group leaders and staff to enjoy some fellowship, evaluations and root beer floats! A great game of kickball ended the evening. Previously, in April, the 8th grade class had a chance to visit Luther college in Decorah, IA. While on campus the youth participated in worship, toured the college, took part in some learning sessions, enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria and of course visited the Whippy Dip. Confirmation continues into the summer with both our 7th/8th graders spending some time at camp at Good Earth Village in Spring Valley, MN. Our 7th grade youth will spend a week at camp - hiking, worshiping, swimming, learning, singing and joining in games. The 8th graders will have a 2 night 2 day retreat during the same week where they will start their preparations for their Affirmation of Baptism worship coming up this fall. Please pray for our youth, staff, and leaders at Good Earth Village for a safe and enjoyable time at camp.

Page 4 Herald Volume 37 Issue Annual Carnival and Memorial Garden Ministries gathered to grow sent to serve 2016 Annual Carnival Memorial Garden By: Becky Grant During the growing season, members of the Memorial Garden meet weekly to tend, plant, and enjoy plantings that beautify and celebrate the lives of those we love. We welcome Hosanna members to join us. We work on Tuesday mornings, and a second evening group is being planned. Let us have a bit of your time and we will teach you about our favorites. Each month, a member of our Team will be sharing a story and picture of their favorite garden flower. We hope this brings more people to view the place we work and learn so much from, not only by digging in the dirt, but by sharing what we know with each other. Every day last summer while walking to and from my car to work, I noticed an interesting grass like plant that had violet blue star shaped flowers with gold center that rise above fine foliage. The flowers seem to worship the sun, remaining tightly closed until warmed by the sun rays. I investigated and learned this little gem of a plant, Blue-Eyed Grass Lucerne is not a true grass. A relative of the Iris, this little native charms for many weeks in early summer and if conditions are right blooming until late summer. It is my new favorite plant for the reasons already mentioned as well as it is low clump-forming, low maintenance, tolerates dry conditions and a source of nectar for native bees and other pollinators such as butterflies. I understand it is deer resistant too. I added several to my garden, perhaps you will too. Happy Gardening, Becky Grant

gathered to grow Outreach Ministries Herald Volume 37 Issue Page 5 Papua New Guinea Thank you again for the support you have given me here in Papua New Guinea. I am finishing my four year term here and will be returning to the United States in early July. It will be hard to leave, but I believe that, at this time, my gifts can better be used elsewhere. I would like to share with you some of the things I have learned while here. 1) I found that I've taken living conditions in the United States for granted. I assume refrigeration, electricity, running water, washing machines etc. as a right, not the privilege it is. Even though our students have water to their kitchens and overhead lights, they still spend much time and energy in daily chores like washing clothes. I need to remember to be thankful for these everyday things. I am also thankful for the good health care in the United States. Here, even where doctors and community health workers are available, they are often hampered by corruption and lack of supplies. 2) Learning a new language was, for me, harder than I anticipated. Tok Pisin is considered an easy language to learn, but I am still not able to express myself well. This has limited my ministry, especially with the women who often don t know much English. It has also meant that I have not taught many theology classes. If I apply for international teaching again it will have to be a location where I can teach in English (like Hong Kong). 3) The concept of family is much broader in PNG than in the US. Children may live with other relatives than their parents and it is seen as normal. Even the words for describing your relatives show that. For example, the younger sister of your mother is your small mother (if I have it straight). Families tend to be larger so children have to fend for themselves at an early age. Bikpela i blessim yu, Pastor Ann Klavano Senior Flierl Seminary Papua New Guinea Community Garden Summer Help Needed Hosanna s Community Garden has been planted. Now it needs maintenance throughout the summer. There s weeding and watering and eventually harvesting to do. Most of the produce harvested goes to Channel One or to the families who come to Hosanna s Pantry. Please consider being part of Hosanna s community garden team. If you have gardening experience or even if you re a novice and would like to get involved, you may contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net or call We have two returning Channel One families gardening in the plots up the hill, Yvonne and her family who last year moved to Rochester from Cameroon, and Prang and her from Cambodia. Be sure to say hi and welcome them if you see them out in the gardens during the summer.

Page 6 Outreach Ministries...sent to serve Red Cross Shelter Team Holds Quarterly Meeting The Hosanna Red Cross Shelter Team held a quarterly meeting on April out of the 26 members were able to attend as follows: Barb Anderson, Diane Click, Ashley Edvenson, Julie Edvenson, Jane Johnson, Keith Johnson, Laurie Maidl, Pastor Bill Meiers, Sonja Meiers, Lisa Nordman, Gene Ohnstad, Judy Ruegg, Stephanie Stevens, Bill Weis, Karla Weis, Beth Wiegand, and Niel Wiegand. Highlights of the meeting include the following: The team welcomed Ashley Edvenson as its newest member! Ashley will be completing training over the spring and summer months. Jane Johnson discussed her recent deployment to Mississippi to assist with sheltering in response to flooding. It was Jane s first national deployment and it was a rewarding experience! All team members were encouraged to complete at least one continuing education online training course between now and the fall quarterly meeting. During the last half hour, the team broke into subgroups to review new forms and documents. Herald Volume 37 Issue Blood Donation: When you Give, others Live. You may not know this, but Hosanna is part of the Blood Assurance Program at Mayo. What this means is that if you need blood, the blood donor center will waive the processing fees not covered by insurance for Hosanna members even if you are unable to be a blood donor! I've attached the Hosanna Lutheran group participation in 2015 for your review. As you can see, Hosanna has about 11% of the members donating and the goal is to reach 25%. In past years we have had a day for donation at Hosanna. Instead, now there is an option for a group of four or more people to be picked up and dropped off from the church. Mayo will provide the transportation to and from the downtown donor center. You will find this brochure located at the church kiosk that outlines this service, "Team up and save lives.". If you are interested in donating, but still uncertain, please review some other materials that you can find at the kiosk: 1) Blood donation frequently asked questions, 2) What is your blood type and who can you help?, and 3) Our patients need your help every day. This summer, the worship theme for Hosanna is healing. By donating a unit of blood, you would be helping someone else heal whether from surgery, an accident, or disease. Donating blood can also be healing to us as the donor, as what better feeling is there than when we can help someone in need. Could we increase our # of Hosanna members donating? I am happy to help make that happen. If interested in donating as a team of 4 or more, please let me know and I'd be happy to help arrange a donation date for your group. I can be reached by phone, or weis.karla@mayo.edu. Whether you are a new donor or a returning donor, in the spirit of healing, please consider donating a unit of blood. Please be sure to mention you are a Hosanna member at the time of donation.

President s Message Page 10 Hello, Herald Volume 37 Issue Hope everyone is having a really nice spring and getting all of that yard work done now that the weather is finally giving us a break. Track and Field has been less than fun with all of the rainy, cold days. As some of you know I took a trip to Madrid, Spain April 16th through April 22nd. I was selected by IBM to attend the 2016 Technology Academy. Training presentations were 6 hours per day, each session was a different topic, so there was a little information overload by the end of the week. Before the week started some of my coworkers and I had a chance to visit downtown Madrid which was referred to as City Center. The three of us roamed around the city for 2 or 3 hours then caught a hop-on hop-off tour bus. There were 2 tour options old and new, we took the old tour. I really enjoyed the historical information and the building architecture was incredible (see photos below). During the week I was able to meet many of my foreign coworkers. Some from US and others from places like Egypt, China, Canada, and India. There were about 2100 people there, and about 20 from my organization. One fun technology note was the use of Google translator, I could speak into the iphone in English and the phone would translate to Spanish for me. It was a great way to get around and communicate. I know many have commented on the cross tower already, but I would just like to add my thanks to all that were involved from planning to the installation, great job. What a beautiful addition to our church. President Ray Ashworth

Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 37 Issue Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, Summer worship at our church begins on May 29 and ends on September 11 with one worship service at 9:00am and coffee hour with donuts served following the worship service at 10:00am. The overarching theme for summer 2016 worship is: For The Healing Of The Nations. Many of the Bible Texts assigned for the months of June, July, and August focus on the theme of healing. Healing happens in three spheres in scripture. They are personal healing, societal healing, and global healing. In our own lives, that of our nation and the world itself there is such brokenness today. Jesus enters into our lives, the national and international scene with a message of reconciliation and healing. Come and experience healing in your own life and broader community as Jesus teaching as recorded in the Gospel of Luke bring us Jesus words of comfort and healing.
