4 Herald Volume 39 Issue 9 Music Ministries Page 4 Grace and Exodus For many years, I didn t like to sing with a group at church. Why? I had all the best reasons for not doing it. I didn t sing in a choir growing up, so I don t really know how to sing with others. I don t know if I have the time. Other people have better voices than me. Finally, my desire to sing and most importantly be in fellowship with others who love to sing and make music was more important than any excuse I had. Making music and sharing it with others is a great experience. Both Grace and Exodus are wonderful opportunities to do just that. We make it easy and fun; all experience levels are welcome. (Although with Exodus, it s good to have a couple of years of playing under your belt). I have recordings of most songs, so you can practice at home. We work during rehearsals, so you feel comfortable playing the music. If you are interested in trying either or both groups out, please contact Catherine at catherinedavis01@gmail.com. Praise! Hand Chime Ringers Needed Praise! Hand chimes is an intergenerational music group which welcomes people ages years old. This would be a fun experience for individuals, couples and/or families. No musical experience is needed, just a willingness to learn. Each person only needs to keep track of one or two notes. Praise! is scheduled to meet Wednesdays beginning September 12th from 5:00-5:30pm. Please consider this opportunity to make music together to enrich our worship services. Contact Cynthia McLaren, (cynthia.mc200@gmail.com) if you plan to participate or if you have questions. Children s Choir At Hosanna we value each person s voice. That is one of the reasons we include all children in music sessions who attend the education hour. Each child has gifts to share and they greatly benefit from this musical experience of learning Christian songs. As schools decrease music education and there are fewer opportunities to learn songs of faith, it is crucial for Hosanna to offer this experience to our children. These sessions are divided into two age groups Cherub Choir for three-year olds to Kindergarten and Kids Kwire for Grades 1-6. We call them choirs because the children are learning how to sing in a group and learning the basics of performing as they are also forming a community of believers. Another purpose is to sing praises to God and develop a closer relationship to the Holy Trinity. The Cherub Choir and Kids Kwire share their music with the congregation about every 4 weeks bringing joy and enthusiasm to our worship services.

5 Page 5 Herald Volume 39 Issue 9 Hosanna Choir Does singing change the world? No, but singing changes people and people change the world. - Quote f rom Andrew Donaldson, worship leader and musician Music Ministries I frequently state that the congregation is the most important choir in worship. It invigorates all of us if each of us sings out with confidence and true praise to our Lord. However, there is a place in worship for a choir that has taken the time to rehearse meaningful part-songs and learn liturgies and hymns to lead in worship. Because of the time they have taken to practice, our worship is enhanced. Although you see the choir standing as a group during worship (and often looking very serious and focused on the music), what you don t see is how strong their relationships have become because of their participation in choir. You miss them praying together, sharing their joys and concerns; you miss out on the jokes and laughter; you miss out on the tears when the music brings strong emotions to the surface; you miss out on hearing their statements of faith; and you miss out on the support they give to each other in all aspects of their lives as they become a family. Don t miss out on this opportunity to reinforce your faith. Rehearsals are on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Contact me at music@hosannalutheran.org or if you plan to attend, have questions, want to participate but can t rehearse on Wednesdays, or want a singing lesson. I say, Come one, come all! PARTICIPATE IN MUSIC MINISTRY TEAMS Rejoice in the Lord Always and in All Ways! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving: let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! -Psalm 95:2 Be a part of sharing God s love, mercy and inspiration through music by participating in Hosanna s Music Ministry Teams. Pastor s Evening Bible Study Pastor s evening Bible study begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20 th. This year we will be studying the Books of Joshua, Judges & Ruth. Central to the Bible's history of the nation of Israel, the books of Joshua, Judges & Ruth reveal how God used people with different backgrounds, personalities, strengths, and flaws to bring the tribes of Israel into the land of Canaan and lead them to victory over many opponents. There is a signup sheet at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Area. Bible study books are available in the church office. Questions can be directed to Paul or barbpaul@charter.net. Book Discussion September 15 Consider joining the book discussion group this fall. You ll read a variety of books, engage in fascinating discussions and enjoy good Christian fellowship. Discussions are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. Coffee will be on and members take turns bringing treats. The book to be discussed on September 15 is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. The story centers on Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat who, in 1922, is hauled before a Bolshevik tribunal and sentenced to confinement within the attic of the luxury Metropol hotel. His confinement gives him a unique first-hand look at some of the most significant events of Russian history as they unfold outside his window. It explores themes of justice, the psychology of the imprisoned, and finding one s purpose in life. The book was praised for its in-depth portrayal of the lead character and its detailed depiction of post-revolution Russia. The books scheduled through the end of the year include: October 20 Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate November 10 The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion You may contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net with questions or for more information.

9 Herald Volume 39 Issue 9 9 Page 9 Hosanna Lutheran Church August 13, 2018 Council Minutes Council Page Pastor s Report: Dave moved (Sinde seconded) that we accept his June and July reports. It passed unanimously. Pastoral acts included a burial, a baptism, and three funerals. Vibrant Faith is still contributing and a recent meeting was very helpful. The 40 th Anniversary celebration was very enjoyable! Outreach: God s work. Our hands. is Sunday, September 9. The service projects are ready to go with a couple more possibilities being finalized. Faith Formation: It was a very busy Summer! Campers at Good Earth Village, Vacation Bible School, and a Youth Gathering! Vibrant Faith is proving very helpful and still providing guidance. People are using the calendar and space requests properly. Having the sermons available online is a great option. Music & Worship: There has been good attendance throughout the summer. It was a great VBS. Pastor s 40 th anniversary celebration was memorable. The preparation and support for the numerous funerals is greatly appreciated. Offering the Bread of Life was a nice fellowship opportunity for building relationships. More will be shared about the St. Olaf Music Conference. Fellowship: Several funerals taking place while team and congregation members were in short supply caused concern, but all went well. The funeral team is considering using Sign-up Genius to organize like the lectors. Support: The properties committee needs a member. There will be a fire inspection soon. The parking lot improvement is in progress. A smoke detector will be installed for scouts to be able to stay overnight. There is a small maintenance needed on the heating and cooling system. Light bulbs are being replaced. There will be a sprinkler system check soon. Next Council meeting on Tuesday, September 11 at 7pm. 10 Page 10 President s Page Herald Volume 39 Issue 9 Happy September!!! Where has the summer gone? Some of the things that I think about as we begin the month of September are the following: crisp mornings and cooler evenings, changing colors in the landscape, young adults leaving for their dorm rooms and college, the start of the school year and Sunday school, football, sweatshirts, and our God s work. Our hands. Sunday! Have you ever really stopped and thought about what our hands can do? For that matter, where our feet can take us? Think about everything we do with our hands and feet. As I thought about this, it led me to the following Bible verse. Ecclesiastes 2: 24: So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. Isn t that a powerful verse? The Hand of God..He does have a hand in everything we do! And this is good, indeed! On Sunday, September 9 th, Hosanna will once again participate in God s work. Our hands. This is a special day for Hosanna: a day to serve and love our neighbors as a congregation. We do many things throughout the year in service to others, but during this day, we can all work together on a project or projects as an individual or as a family! Our committee and outreach advocates are working hard to get this event ready for all of us! And this will be an exciting day! The ELCA has participated in this service since 2013! This day has been dedicated as a day of service: to share God s love with all people. Each year, we have had dedicated ministry teams that work on various service projects throughout the year, but on the 9 th, all will have the opportunity to participate in one or more of the offered service projects! Have you ever stopped to think about the service that you can provide to someone in need? From recycling of crayons, to planting a tree, harvesting our garden, hanging a birdfeeder, helping with Susan s Suppers, working or helping at Neuro House, cleaning up our section of Highway 52, installation of fire alarms: just to name a few of the projects being planned for Sept 9 th! Watch for more information, flyers and announcements at church. If you have any questions, talk to our Outreach Advocates: Kelly Ganglehoff or Dawn Koster. Look at your hands: see what amazing instruments they are: and think of what you can do with them! Then look at your feet and see where they can take you: outside the walls of our homes and Hosanna, as we are sent to serve. The Hand of God is alive and well at Hosanna! Thank you for your service! God s Blessings! Lisa Hosanna s Adopt-a-Highway You can help clean Hosanna s section of Highway 52 east of Apache mall. The walking, bending, and lifting will improve your fitness level. The next cleanup day is Sunday, September 9th at 12:00 p.m. as part of God s work. Our hands. Sunday. We will be done by 1:30 p.m. or probably before. There is a signup sheet in the gathering area or contact Paul or barbpaul@charter.net.

11 Herald Volume 39 Issue 9 Pastor Meier s Page Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, I was reading Gerhard Frost s booklet, Hungers of the Heart. Here is a thought worth pondering. We suppose that if Jesus would only become contemporary in the way that we are contemporary, if he could walk on our street, or better yet, up our alley, and enter our home, we would willingly let him enter our hearts, but the truth is that explanations never made disciples, and our quest for full and final answers is an enemy of our welfare. Only in encounter with God, where God has the first and the last word can we know the joy of discipleship. To bow before the mystery is to leave more and more, yes even all, to God. That is the Blessed assurance we have as Christians. Our life, our all begins and ends in God. We are a people of faith. We live in the promises of God. When we enter into discipleship with Christ, we enter into a relationship with the living God. That relationship empowers us to do the work of the kingdom. Again Dr. Frost speaks to this in Hungers of the Heart. A baby s birth is God s signal from the future. It tells us that God has not given up on the world. God has not and will not abandon us. This promise is the central hope at which we light our flickering lamps. But God doesn t only dream, God gives, and gives again, and shows us how we can enter into the dream by sharing his gifts with others. In this way God satisfies our longing to belong, to love and to give. On September 9th we as a congregation, have the unique opportunity to share God s love and give of ourselves to address the needs of others. God s work. Our hands. is our annual coming together for a focused day of service born of thanksgiving. Living in the assurance of God s love, let us show our faith in tangible discipleship as we serve our neighbor. See you in Church.
