2 Page 2 Herald Volume 38 Issue 10 Discipleship Ministries gathered to grow Book Discussion October 21 Join the book discussion group this fall. You ll read a variety of books, engage in fascinating discussions and enjoy Christian fellowship. Discussions are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Coffee will be on and members take turns bringing treats. The book to be discussed on October 21 is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This classic piece of American fiction, published in 1925, follows Jay Gatsby, a man who orders his life around one desire: to be reunited with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost five years earlier. Gatsby's quest leads him from poverty to wealth, into the arms of his beloved, and eventually to death. Join in the discussion of this pitch-perfect portrayal of the Jazz Age, and searching critiques of materialism, love and the American Dream. The book scheduled for November 11(note earlier date) is A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. You may contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net with questions or for more information. First Communion Hosanna's First Communion retreat will be coming up on Saturday, Nov. 4th. Fifth graders interested in taking First Communion are asked to attend this retreat (with their parent(s)) from 9:00a - noon. The worship service where First Communion will be distributed will be held on Sunday, Nov. 19th at 10:30. Vibrant Faith At Hosanna Thank you to all who participated in the Vibrant Faith workshop or adult education on the weekend of Sept. 16th-17th. Tom Schwolert, our coach, has provided the team with a compilation of the leadership surveys that were completed by those at the workshop on Saturday. Our next step? Tom writes: Thank you for your welcome of me last weekend at Hosanna. I know it took time and work to gather people together for the workshop and forum and I m glad you were able to get good participation. It is clear to me that this faith community is anxious to do some things. I understand the temptation to just start doing some new things. But we must be patient and take time to discover and discern what God is calling Hosanna to do......your prayer and devotion to this process are so important. We must listen to God s leading. May you see God s active presence and love in new and exciting ways in this process. Tom. So, our next steps include continued prayer while we discover and discern individually, within our casual conversations, through participation on our ministry teams and as a congregation. Thank you for taking the time, at your ministry team meetings, to "discover" and "discern" what God is calling us to do. Hosanna's Vibrant Faith team (Pastor Meiers, Laurie Maidl, Lisa King, Nancy Wales, Barb Schepp and Darcy Youngstrom) will also be focusing on this process with an additional online meeting with Tom during October. If you should have any questions about the process or the materials shared during the Vibrant Faith weekend, feel free to contact any of the individuals listed on the team and thank you for your continued prayer.

Please contact Hosanna s Support Advocate or a member of the Properties Team for more information regarding cost, etc. 2005: Construction of wall 2006: Memorial Garden plant care ministry team formed : Fundraisers conducted by team, donations of plants grown from seed or given from member s gardens were planted : Cost of plant materials, lawn sprinkler system, garden and urn drip lines, decorative concrete border and many other supplies have been supported by fundraisers, generous member donations, memorial gift tributes, Thrivent Financial matching funds, member directed Thrivent Choice dollars, and Thrivent Action Team Grants. Hosanna s budget does not fund this ministry. The Memorial Garden is a forever commitment our congregation made in 2004, when this idea became a reality. The promise was made to care for the wall and its surrounding grounds. This is an important, ongoing ministry requiring care of the garden into perpetuity. Presently, the ashes of three Hosanna members are interred in the garden; Marlin Bushman, Alvin Knutson and Joyce Bandel. It is with honor and respect for them and their families that the ministry team works to maintain this space. All are welcome to visit the garden to remember, reflect, meditate, pray and enjoy God s beautiful gifts. Currently, a few committed gardeners care for this space May Oct. We are greatly in need of more volunteers to carry on this responsibility into Hosanna s future. See any team member to learn more. Sandy Scheuneman, for the Memorial Garden Ministry Team: Nan Peters, Ginny Solberg, Connie Ness, Julie Edvenson, Carolyn Dahl, Judy Ruegg, Becky Grant, Sally Nelson, Kathy Plantz Fall cleanup Saturday, October 14, from 9:00-12:00. Volunteers are needed for this activity and all participation is greatly appreciated. This year we will perform our usual general cleanup of the outside property. This will include trimming of shrubs, raking of leaves and an overall cleanup of the outside property. We would also like to attempt a thorough cleaning of walls and ceilings in the bathrooms and kitchen areas. These areas are in need of extra attention and we plan to update these areas with painting and repairing/replacing worn out items at a later time. Volunteers will be required for both projects so please plan to help. It will help if you can bring your own rakes, trimmers, and your favorite general cleaning supplies to get this accomplished. Please call Guy Griesmann ( ) if there are questions or leave a note with Jodi Solum (Secretary).

6 Page 6 Herald Volume 38 Issue 10 Outreach Ministries...sent to serve Quilters Group October 20 Hi! My name is Janet Walsh and I, like many people, have a passion for something that I love to do. Mine is quilting. One reason I love quilting at Hosanna is I find fabric on our shelves and cut it into 101/2 inch squares to my hearts content. I can help piece quilts together and I can sew them together or they can be sewn at the monthly quilting meeting. Another reason I love quilting at Hosanna is the fellowship I have with all the women who quilt. We start out each month with a morning coffee hour, we discuss whatever is going on in our lives. Then, we start to find a quilt, whether we need to piece one together or put batting and backing together, like what we did for God s work. Our hands. Sunday. Then we break for lunch and more fellowship. At the end of the day we see what we have accomplished during the day. Then we wave good-bye and start anticipating next month s meeting. Thank you God where I can share my passion with others. The Quilters meet the third Thursday of the month at 9:00 am. Community Food Response Fight Hunger Run/Walk - October 9 th Please join other Hosanna members for a Fight Hunger Run/Walk on Monday, October 9 th, 6:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at TerraLoco, th Street Southwest. You can participate in a one-mile walk or else a 5K fun run. Please bring a $5.00 donation to participate and a non-perishable food donation. Proceeds will benefit Community Food Response (CFR.) There will be refreshments and information about CFR following the event. Spread the word! Bring a friend! Prayer Shawl Group October 9 and 27 The Prayer Shawl team meets twice a month, once in the evening and once during the day. Meetings this month are on the 2nd Monday at 6:30 pm and on the 4th Friday at 1:00 pm. If you like to knit or crotchet or would like to learn, you may join this caring ministry at any time. Contact Carolyn Dahl at crdahl25@charter.netwith questions. Members may also stop by the office to pick up a prayer shawl for a family member or friend in need of prayer and comfort. Samaritan Bethany Worship Escorts Needed for Month of November Hosanna is scheduled to provide worship escorts at Samaritan Bethany during the month of November. Samaritan Bethany is a senior living facility located at 24 8 th Street Northwest. Three to four worship escorts are needed for each worship service. The first arrival time for volunteers is 8:30 a.m. (for the 9:00 a.m. service) and the second arrival time for volunteers is 9:30 a.m. (for the 10:00 a.m. service.) Worship escorts transport wheelchair-bound residents to and from the chapel. More information and sign-up sheets can be found at the Welcome Center. Please contact Keith Johnson if you have any questions at kgjjej@charter.net or Mittens and More We ve had cool weather already but nothing like the icy, frigid, biting temperatures we will experience in the next several months. It s time again to begin collecting winter outer wear for our neighbors and friends who are unable to obtain these necessities for themselves. Please gather you re gently used/clean winter outer wear that you no longer need or use. You can also purchase items at our local thrift shops: Savers, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army Store. Most needed items at this time are mittens/gloves, boots, jackets, snow pants, and sweaters in all sizes. Please place the items you ve donated in the box in the conference room. We are called to love our neighbors as Jesus Christ has so unselfishly loved us, and when we do not care for those with needs, we are also ignoring Christ our brother. Thank you.

7 Herald Volume 38 Issue 10 Page 7 th Hosanna s Pantry October 27 & 28 Join Hosanna s Pantry team this fall. It s a great way to share God s love with families in need and work together as a family. Children as young as 5 are invited to help with their parents. It s a great way for teens to earn service hours. The pantry will be Saturday, October 28 from 9:00 11:30 am. Setup is Friday, October 27 at 10:00 am. There s something for all ages to do. You can help with the pantry set up on Friday. Or you can help greet families, help them shop, carry out groceries or clean up on Saturday morning. There s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson, at barbpaul@charter.net or with questions. Outreach Ministries The following service projects were accomplished by the work of our hands: We made 75 tied Fleece Caps for Mittens & More Ministry. We assembled 240 packages of 6 Can Soups for visitors during the week and for Channel One families. 44 plates of cookies (dozen per plate) were bagged, divided, and delivered to Dorothy Day, Hope Lodge, and Gift of Life Transplant House. 50 Camp Noah Kids Kits were assembled and will be delivered to a Camp Noah office at Luther Seminary. We helped tie and pin 2 ½ quilts together for the Quilters Ministry. About lbs. of garden produce (potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, zucchinis, green beans) was harvested and delivered to Gage East Apartments/Empowerment Center. Three teams of two people each split up in the afternoon and installed a total of 20 smoke alarms and 8 carbon monoxide detectors at 8 different residences. Thirteen people helped with Adopt-a-Highway and cleaned up our section of Hwy 52 S. and collected 32 bags of garbage. On Wednesday, September 13 th, thirteen members prepared, cooked, and served dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. We served about 30 people and had enough to make to go plates for the staff to put in two other kitchens for families to eat at their convenience....sent to serve Thank you to everyone who participated in our 4 Annual God s work. Our hands. Sunday! Hebrew 6:10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. Hosanna s 4th annual GWOH s Sunday was filled with worship, fellowship, food, fun, and community service projects. The front of the sanctuary was decorated with three blue banners, with yellow cutouts of people s hands. Two banners with pretty blue shades of ribbons hung down the middle of the pulpit and altar which were adorned with white cloth. The worship service started with a vibrant processional with the congregation singing Praise, praise, praise the Lord, Praise God s Holy name Allelulia!, while people of all ages carried in colorful crosses and swim noodles decorated with ribbons. They marched around the aisles of the sanctuary and placed the crosses and noodles against the back of the wall and around the altar.

October th Anniversary of the Reformation A special documentary film, Luther and the Reformation, will be shown during the adult forum. This film was produced especially for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. Should Children Sit Through Big Church? The short answer to the above question is definitely, YES!. At Hosanna families of all sizes and ages are embraced and are encouraged to attend worship. Children bring wonder and energy to our worship experiences and they learn from observing adults around them. We continue with intergenerational worship because everyone benefits. Here are some thoughts from an article of the same name by Pastor John Piper: Authentic, heartfelt worship is the most valuable thing in human experience. The cumulative effect on children, between the time they are born to 17 years old, of 800+ worship services spent with parents/guardians in authentic communion with God and his people is utterly incalculable.. The aim is that the children catch the passion for worshiping God by watching mom and dad (and other adults) enjoy God week after week.the bottom line is heartfelt, passionate encounters with the living God in worship should be the greatest desire of a parents heart. And there is no better place or time to impart this than with mom/dad/ guardian doing it together with their children in worship.

10 President s Message Page 10 Herald Volume 38 Issue 10 Greetings Hosanna friends: Jesus said This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you This love is very apparent in our congregation, not only for each other, but for those we can help beyond our building. God s work. Our hands. was a great example of what we do well. It was so fun to see people of all ages, from preschoolers to seniors, working together. We were able to put together 6 Can Soup and Camp Noah kits, make fleece hats and quilts and dig more produce from the garden. When we think of all the people that will benefit from 2 hours of our time, it is amazing! And later that week we were able to make dinner for the families at Ronald McDonald House. They were very grateful and one little girl summed it up nicely when she gave Barb Schepp a big hug as we were leaving, thanking us for being there. I would like to thank Terri Ashworth for her hard work in helping to organize this event. She started the ball rolling and it took off from there. This was the first year Dan and I were able to participate and we both had a great time! Then last week we began our Vibrant Faith ministry with Tom Schwolert, who will be our coach. Tom was able to hear and see many of the things we are already doing at Hosanna. As Tom said, we, the people of Hosanna, are the church. It is not the building we worship and meet in. And Tom will help us to look at how we can expand all the amazing work we are already doing into a ministry plan to help us grow even more, both inside and outside the walls of Hosanna. The church of today is different than it was several years ago. And we have the opportunity to grow in our faith and in our mission as we are gathered to grow and sent to serve! May the Lord guide us as we progress!! 11 Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 38 Issue 10 Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, October 2017 marks the month of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Here are some reflections on the Reformation then and now written by Marcus Kunz and Amanda Lauer who serve on the 500th anniversary committee of the ELCA. Martin Luther and Lutherans Today Who was Martin Luther? Martin Luther was a Catholic monk and priest living in Wittenberg Germany, in the early 1500s. When he began questioning the church teaching that was used to justify selling indulgences, a fierce controversy began over the church s teachings on forgiveness, grace, and faith; the content of preaching; and the church s ministry. Luther was eventually excommunicated from the church and outlawed by civil authorities, but his witness of God s forgiving mercy in Christ found many supporters. What happened on October 31, 1517? On this date Luther sent a letter to the Catholic archbishop Mainz that urged renewed preaching of the gospel and the love of Christ instead of continued promotion of indulgences, which had silenced gospel preaching. He did not choose the day at random. Church representatives were actively marketing indulgences in a neighboring area, and the next day, All Saints Day, was a church festival associated with the church s teaching on merits, which was used to promote the selling of indulgences. He also enclosed a copy of his 95 theses, which were also likely posted on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg the same day. Why is this still relevant today? All of us continue to live in a culture where judgment, guilt, and shame are everyday experiences and where bullying words, abusive actions, and shaming political discourse permeate our public and private lives. The indulgences controversy may be a relic of the past, but the healing and reconciling message of God s mercy and forgiveness in Christ that Luther and others served is still needed-and still surprisingly contested. Who are ELCA Lutherans today? What is your teaching and practice? Whenever ELCA Lutherans gather and are asked for one word to describe who they are, overwhelmingly the answer is grace. Martin Luther described grace as God s favor or good will toward us in Jesus Christ. This liberating experience of who God is for humankind is the heart of Lutheran teaching and practice as Lutherans live and serve in a wide range of contexts in the United States and globally. Why do you have the word evangelical in your name? What does that mean? Evangelical combines two Greek words that mean message and good (news). Martin Luther and others in the sixteenth century called themselves evangelicals because they were committed to proclaiming and serving the message of good news in Jesus Christ-that is, the message of God s forgiving mercy and compassion. The ELCA continues to use this name for the same reason. Come join the celebration at Hosanna of our heritage as we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation during the month of October. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers Pastor Acts August 26 Wedding Alicia Wildfeuer and Trevor Kinney
