During Minnesota Food Share Month in March we reached all the goals we set! We donated over $2,500 to the Channel One Virtual Fund Drive (the exact amount won t come in until the first week in April). We brought in 150 bags of groceries. That money is being divided between Hosanna s ELCA scholarship fund, the Women s Shelter, Interfaith Hospitality Network and ELCA Good Gifts to match our hunger themes during Lent. Finally, we bought 31 baby chicks through our Buck-a-Chick drive during Lent. Since we reached the goals that were set, Pastor Meiers will be shaving off his mustache and Lisa Kipp will have red stripes in her hair this month! We accomplished a lot and had fun doing it! LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR DAY A Day to Unite for the Common Good May 4 On May 4, young and old will unite in a day of service to love our neighbors in Rochester. The event, sponsored by Rochester ELCA churches, aims to bring people together to create connections and strengthen the community. The idea began when a group of area pastors started talking about how we could be the church in ways that were meaningful to those who weren t a part of a church. The team working on this project hopes that this event gives people a positive experience of Christians and the church as a whole. The day will focus on four areas: children and youth, senior adults, parks and environment, and construction and maintenance. All ages are invited to participate and any one, whether a part of the church or not, is welcome to participate. The planning team has also reached out to University of Minnesota-Rochester and Rochester Community and Technical College. We have also partnered with the United Way of Olmsted County to recruit volunteers. Our goal is to have at least 500 people serving on May 4! You can learn more at the event s facebook page: lyndroch. You can register to serve at the United Way s Volunteer Central website: volunteer.truist.com/ olmsted/loveyourneighborday. Pre-registration is preferred, but service sites will be available for same day registrants. For questions, loveyourneighborday@gmail.com.

9 Herald Volume 34 Issue 4 Page 9 gathered to grow sent to serve Council Page COUNCIL SUMMARY March 12, 2013 The 402nd Council meeting was called to order by President Noel Sederstrom at 7:00 pm, March 12, In attendance were: Noel Sederstrom, Keith Johnson, Lisa Nordman, Alice Kub, Paul Anderson, Karla Weis, Barb Anderson, Chris Johnson, Dave Wall and Pastor Meiers. Also present were Becky Grant and Jolene Olson. Pastor Meiers led a devotion from Leading on Purpose. The Council Minutes from February (with corrections) were approved. The Pastor s Report from February was approved. The Financial Reports from February were approved. Becky Grant came as a representative from the Memorial Garden Team and gave a presentation. There are currently eleven members on the team which was established in early 2000 to maintain and care for the plants in Hosanna s Memorial Garden. They meet weekly to plant, weed, deadhead, mulch and fertilize as well as take care of the lawn for the immediate area. One of the challenges is the misconception of the role of the Memorial Garden Team, which is plant care versus the mission and oversight of the Memorial Garden structure. We talked about how more awareness is needed on the policies and procedures so the congregation has more knowledge regarding the Memorial Garden. There are many opportunities for new members to check out this important ministry. Thank you for all the work that this team has done. Jolene Olson came as a representative from the Sunday School Team. The curriculum being used this year, Spark, has had positive feedback. It is lectionary based so follows the church sermons and it seems to be a good fit for our congregation. Vacation Bible School will be held the week of June 17, 2013 and the curriculum has already been picked out. They are also working on the end of year carnival. Thank you to everyone on this team as it is a very important ministry for Hosanna. Noel Sederstrom gave a Business and Finance update. Things are looking good and financially we should be fine through September. There will also be additional money from the Head Start program that is not in the budget as they will be using more space and staying longer. More children will be at Hosanna and they will also be staying into November. Keith Johnson is responsible for stewardship and is working with Larry Iverson on what a year round program would look like. He is hoping to take more of a holistic approach and include different areas of stewardship such as time, talent and treasures. He will give a full report at the next council meeting. Council Advocates had time to make comments regarding their reports. Chris Johnson has been upgrading the internet and is looking at a better web hosting solution. Barb Anderson said the church will be purchasing a new camera. Noel Sederstrom talked about being able to use our web-site to stream live and archive the church services. More research will need to be done on that topic. Pastor Meiers discussed the staffing vision for Hosanna. The personnel committee has been and will continue to meet with the different groups affected to identify needs and see how things are going. Pastor Meiers said it will be important to make sure that the staff added will be able to accommodate a broad number of ministries including youth, education and pastoral duties. The budgeting cycle is when decisions need to be made so it s important to have this done by October. We will really see the impact this fall when all the programming happens and Lisa Kipp is gone. Carol Strand will be helping out ten hours a week and that could be used to help fill in some of the needs for confirmation and worship planning. The discussion of staffing will be an agenda item for April. It will be important to keep the personnel committee updated on our thoughts and have them attend council meetings since they will be helping to make a recommendation. Barb Anderson has received positive feedback on the new Hosanna web-site. It is wonderful and a big improvement. Thank you to everyone that helped with this. The meeting adjourned at 9:25pm. Respectfully submitted, Lisa Nordman councilsecretary@hosannalutheran.org

10 Page 10 President s Message Herald Volume 34 Issue 4 Ever since it was first created, I was haunted by the Blue Tree. I found myself drawn to it, on the northeast lawn of Saint Marys Hospital placed there in honor of Officer Shawn Schneider, shot in the line of duty. When my mom and dad came to visit us that Christmas, I had to show it to them, and I could barely manage to tell them the story behind it without choking up and crying. Imagine my shock a couple of months ago, when looking for historical notes about Hosanna as I was trying to organize our church council retreat. Barb Anderson had thrust the church s 25th anniversary booklet in my hands and it was chockfull of old photos. And there was the picture of Pastor Reinschmidt baptizing Shawn Schneider. I had no idea Shawn was brought into God s family at Hosanna, the first baptism those many years ago. I knew Gary and Sandy Scheuneman were Shawn s aunt and uncle. I found that out a few days after he was shot in Lake City, a police officer just doing his job, trying to rescue a young woman who had asked her mom to call 911 for help. She couldn t get away from a man with a gun, her ex-boyfriend. So Officer Schneider responded and was ambushed while trying to respond to the call. What courage. The Blue Tree was put up while the vigil for him at Saint Marys went on, everyone praying for him to make it. Time has passed since he was buried at Lake City with all the honors the law enforcement community could muster. But even time cannot take away the brutality of what happened, the shock over losing him, the ache for his family. Now we honor his courage at a memorial bearing his name Sandy says this has happened on Lake City s waterfront and it is worth seeking out. There s a bench there to enjoy the awesome beauty of Lake Pepin in the summertime and remember. There s also a bench on Hosanna s east side lawn, where you can sit and remember people you love. It s at our Memorial Garden. For many years Sandy has been helping take care of this beautiful place. The ashes of three of our members are scattered at the Memorial Garden, and we have promised to keep this place for their families. Gary and Sandy are so much a part of our Hosanna spirit with those smiles that will melt a wintry snow bank. They bring a joy to our Hosanna family! Shawn most likely had an inkling that he was walking into danger. Police officers know that domestic disputes are among the most deadly kinds of calls. Just think of Jesus absolutely knowing what he was facing before he was seized and put on trial, and mocked, and tortured, and then left to die. Thank God that our Lord s triumph over death changes everything! We are baptized into his life, his death, his resurrection, and the life to come. Life in all The Scheuneman Family its fullness we can face it all with courage and joy. Peace, Noel Sederstrom Gary and Sandy are both from Elgin; they grew up together. We ve been a couple since age 16, says Sandy. In a small town, you do everything together, and everybody is friends. Now they re both retired; Gary after working for a medical and industrial welding and gas company, Sandy working in a variety of settings in nursing, at a Montessori School and in the end retail sales. Their son Chad and daughter Kelly are both married and they are blessed with eight grandchildren. We weren t charter members of Hosanna, but the next thing to it, says Sandy. It has a small family feel. We each came from a small congregation, an intimate setting the people of Hosanna are our family now.

11 Herald Volume 34 Issue 4 Page 11 Pastor Meiers Page Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, How quickly two years have passed! Lisa Kipp began her internship with us on September 1, She will complete her tenure at Hosanna on April 30 having served half time for the past two years as our Intern Pastor. In May, 2013, Lisa will also complete her theological education at Luther Seminary in St. Paul. Lisa has been enrolled in Luther Seminary s Distributive Learning Program which has enabled her to pursue her call to the ministry while continuing to work, raise her family and participate in course work over the past seven years. She will graduate on May 19, 2013 with a Master of Divinity Degree from Luther Seminary. Having completed her formal education, Lisa will now be eligible for call as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She will meet with the candidacy committee of our Southeastern Minnesota Synod and her approval committee at the seminary as she seeks a call to serve as a pastor of a congregation in the ELCA. It has been my privilege to have served as Lisa s supervising pastor and Hosanna s ministry has greatly benefited from her leadership. Lisa s deep commitment to the Christian faith, her creativity in planning and leading worship and education, her genuine concern for the welfare of others and her bright presence in our community of faith will be deeply missed. Lisa will preach her final sermon at the 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Sunday, April 28. A reception in her honor will be held between services and a lunch and program will follow the second service. Please plan to attend as we thank Lisa for her faithful service to Hosanna and wish her God s blessing as she completes her theological education and seeks a call to serve as an ordained pastor in the ELCA. Thank you, Lisa, for your time with us. God bless and guide you and your family in the path he would have you take.
