3 gathered to grow Discipleship Ministries Herald Volume 37 Issue Page 3 Book Discussion February 20 The book discussion group meets the 3 rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Coffee is on and members take turns bringing treats. There s been a change in the book chosen for February. The group will be reading the classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott instead of 1984 by George Orwell. This historic novel is set in New England during the civil war. While on the surface a simple story about the four March girls journeys from childhood to adulthood, Little Women centers on the conflict between two emphases in a young woman s life that which she places on herself, and that which she places on her family. Through the four different sisters, Alcott explores four possible ways to deal with being a woman bound by the constraints of nineteenthcentury social expectations. Come and join in the lively discussion of this classic coming of age novel. You may contact Barb Anderson, barbpaul@charter.net, with questions. The book scheduled for March 19 is The Residence by Kate Anderson Brower. LENTEN SUPPERS The time for Hosanna s traditional Lenten Soup Suppers has nearly arrived. All members can participate in this priceless fellowship opportunity, which will again help make the Season of Lent a special time at Hosanna. As in past years we will need volunteers (individuals or groups) to provide Main Course (see below) and Bread. In addition, we will need people to help serve and cleanup. You may ask what do I need to know? Well here are some details: When/What: February 10 (Youth serving) February 17 (Men s Bible Study serving) February 24 (Soup) March 2 (Soup) March 9 (Soup) March 16 (Soup) Time: What: How: 6:00 PM 8-9 Soups 7 Breads 3-4 Servers/Cleanup Signup Sheets in the Narthex Remember you can signup for more than one Wednesday!! One time bring Main Course (see above), another time bring Bread. You don t have to serve or cleanup if you don t want to. You don t even have to stay and eat. In that way less food will be needed!! If enough volunteers don t step forward, we still have food, however it will not be as good. For further information or if you are too shy to use the signup sheets at church you can call Paul or at barbpaul@charter.net.

Nancy Wales, Director of Music and Worship, approached the choir members about changing the title of the group to make it sound more inclusive and to make the purpose of the group more apparent. At the beginning of this renaming process, the present name was analyzed. In the dictionary the word senior has two main meanings: 1. older or 2. of higher rank or longer service. In the past, many churches labeled choirs as junior choirs for children/youth and senior choirs for the adults. In today s culture senior more specifically suggests elderly adults rather than just adults in general. Our choir is definitely open to high school students and adults of all ages, not just older adults (senior citizens). The higher rank definition is not something we should want to infer in regards to the choir either. All of our music ministry groups are important and serve a unique purpose. The music each group offers in praise to God is equal to the others. For the process of renaming this music group, choir members were presented with 24 ideas for names plus had the opportunity to offer other suggestions. After two written surveys of members opinions narrowed the list, the name that received the most votes on the third and final survey was Hosanna Choir. Continuing to label the group as a choir is very appropriate because the definition is an organized group of singers who perform together, especially in church, typically combining smaller groups of singers who sing different parts at different pitches. This group exists to sing during worship services and does sing choral music for 4-part mixed voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Changing to Hosanna Choir not only connects the name to our church, but is an exclamation used to express adoration, praise or joy to God and is an abbreviation of the biblical Hebrew hōšī ā-nnā which means save, we pray. Renaming the choir to Hosanna Choir gives this vocal group a clear indication of its purpose. The choir will continue to offer quality choral anthems of adoration and praise to God and provide worship music leadership.
5 gathered to grow Music Ministries Herald Volume 37 Issue Page 5 Heroes of the Faith Hosanna s 25 th Intergenerational Musical March 6 8:00 and 10:30 am at Hosanna 3:00pm at Samaritan Bethany on 8 th Heroes of the Faith, Hosanna s 2016 musical, is a unique field trip. Biblical characters come to life to teach modern day people how to become heroes. We all learn lessons of faith when the tour group discovers David, Deborah, Elijah, Moses and others while touring a museum exhibition. Through dialogue and songs these Bible heroes tell about their exciting adventures and how ordinary people become extraordinary heroes who can help change the world when they listen and follow God s command. Want to be involved? Participate in the cast by contacting Nancy Wales (music@hosannalutheran.org) or help with the production crew of the musical. Sign up on the production crew sheet at the Welcome Center if you are interested in assisting with the set, props, costumes and/ or publicity. Hosanna s music ministry has been presenting intergenerational musicals since No musical was presented in 1996 and two musicals were performed in the same year in 2004 so that makes Heroes of the Faith the 25 th musical. This musical was also presented in 2000 and there will be a display of photos and the program from that production so you can check if you recognize any of the people. Be prepared because we will invite each of you to fill out a form answering the question, Who is your hero of the faith? It could be a hero from the Bible, a historical figure, a person of modern times, someone in your family or someone else you have known. 8 Worship Ministries gathered to grow Page 8 Adult Forum February 2016 Sundays at 9:15am February 7- Disaster and Hunger Over the next six weeks we will reflect on hunger, hope, and God s love in a world of both abundance and need. This first week we consider the consequence of disaster which leads to hunger. February14- Hunger and Daily Bread Each adult forum session during the Lenten Season is based on a devotion from the ELCA World Hunger s 40 Days of Giving. Week two asks the question, What does daily bread mean? February 21- Setting the Table This, the third of our six week Lenten study on hunger, is based on I Corinthians 11: St Paul speaks to us through his writing to the church in Corinth encouraging our awareness of community. Living in community means caring for all who are a part of our community. What implications does St. Paul s call to care for all in our community have to do with hunger issues? February 28- Power and Powerlessness In Luke 13:1-5 the gospel writer directs our attention to Jesus teaching on justice. Too often the victim of injustice is blamed for their life s situation. Jesus offers a new way of seeing the world which seeks to assist those on the edges of society. 10 President s Message Page 10 Herald Volume 37 Issue Last month I started with (Let it snow Let it snow Let it snow), it eventually did and we had a white Christmas. This month I m starting with: Let it thaw Let it thaw Let it thaw Enough snow and cold already, I m ready for spring. This is the year that Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow and has an epiphany Which is that he s just a hefty rodent that knows nothing about weather. As Lutherans, we are in our own Epiphany. We remember Jesus Baptism and how we can lead others to Christ. The water droplets on the windows are a nice touch from the Worship Planning Team as a reminder of the Season of Epiphany. In preparing for our annual meeting I was once again reminded of all that goes on at Hosanna. For the size of our church, we really do a lot. There was recently an article in the Post Bulletin highlighting the Empty Nest Sitter Service, from which another church has already visited the service to see if it is something they could replicate. We were also highlighted on the channel 6 news for our pantry. These are just a few examples of gathered to grow sent to serve. While these areas of service have been publicly recognized, there are many ways people use their talents to serve at Hosanna that are no less important. It all makes up the 40 page annual report. As I step away from my term as President, I want to thank the Church Council, Pastor Meiers, the staff, all the work groups and committees that feed into the council, and the congregation as a whole. You all made it easy to be your president. God Bless, Jim Hello, My name is Ray Ashworth and I have been a member here at Hosanna Lutheran since I will be celebrating 32 years at IBM this May. This is my 8 th year coaching pole vaulting at Century High School and I am looking forward to adding Stephen Ministry to my plate. My wife Terri and I have been married for 31 years in July. Terri is employed at the Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School working as a secretary in the counseling office. We have 2 children, Alexa is 21 and Hayden is 19. Alexa recently graduated from St. Cloud State University with a BS in Community Psychology, a minor in Art, and a minor in British studies. Hayden is serving in the Army Reserves, and attending Dakota County Technical College, where he is in the Heavy Equipment and Diesel mechanic program. Hayden also works as an intern for McQueen Equipment, in St. Paul. I'd like to thank Jim Hansen for all of his time and effort as the 2015 president. Thank you to those who assisted with the 2015 nominating committee, Jim Hansen, Barb Anderson, and Ryan Chadwick. It was nice to have all of the positions filled before we started the year off. Thank you to Barb Anderson for all of her hard work as our Outreach advocate. Thank you to Lou Hermansen for his work as the 2015 Secretary. I am looking forward to working with those advocates that will continue their role in 2016 and the new advocates joining us this year. I am excited about the new cross tower and the upcoming Forty days of giving - national campaign to raise money and stock food shelves As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17 God works through each of us in different ways and as we move forward we should challenge ourselves to use the gifts and abilities we were given to encourage and strengthen each other in our stewardship. 11 Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 37 Issue Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, The Gospel of Luke tells us that, when the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51). This image of Jesus resolutely determined as another translation states it to journey toward his rendezvous with destiny is a fitting image for the season of Lent. During Lent, we make our own journey to Jerusalem with Jesus, determined to leave behind the old self, equally determined to put on the new self, to borrow terms from St. Paul. For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death (Romans 8:2). During Lent, we focus in a special way on Jesus call to repent, to change our point of view and our priorities in life, by attempting to respond more faithfully to God s self-gift of grace. The most basic way we repent, of course, is by growing in love of God and neighbor, and to that end, we embrace those expressions of our faith that enable us to die to the old self traditionally, we fast, we share what we have with those who are in need, and we focus on worship and prayer. During his ministry in Galilee, Jesus cured many people and received much support from those he helped. There must have been a certain comfort in this situation, just as we tend to be satisfied with what is familiar. Yet, Jesus was determined to make his journey to Jerusalem to fulfill the will of his Father. We join Jesus on that journey these forty days of Lent with guidance from the ELCA World Hunger s 40 Days of Giving. The Adult forum on Sunday will introduce the Bible Study that will be the Theme for the Lenten Service that follows on Wednesday at 7 pm. Lenten Devotionals will be provided as a resource for daily reflection at home. During Lent, Jesus invites us to join him as he travels toward death and resurrection. May we willingly accept his invitation to journey with him this Lenten Season. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers December Pastoral Acts December 30 Funeral Worship for Dick Podolske
