3 gathered to grow Discipleship Ministries Herald Volume 38 Issue 2 Page 3 News from up North Hello and happy, blessed winter from up north. Now St. Paul doesn t seem to be too far up north, but when you are homesick for your Hosanna family, it just might as well be 500 miles away instead of 90 miles. Don t get me wrong, I love my internship site. It s a great place to learn and grow, and the people are wonderful. But it s not home. The last couple of months have been extremely busy for me. I preached my first funeral, I planned all of the Wednesday Advent worship services, and now am in the midst of planning the Wednesday Lenten services for E8. E8, or Eastside 8, is a cohort of ELCA churches from the east side of St. Paul. We will be doing shared preaching among these eight churches for the Wednesday night services. This is great experience, and it is also enjoyable to get out into other settings to share the good news of Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to this opportunity. On a personal note, Scott has a new job. He is working for Preventice here in Rochester. We are fortunate that we did not have to go too long without income. Thank you for your prayers, and we appreciate your encouragement along this down time. We have learned to be patient and trust that God knows what God is doing in our lives. And another thank you goes out to the congregation for your financial support during seminary. I will be graduating in May and will be ready for first call at the end of internship, which will be in August. It s hard to believe that these past four years of schooling are nearly over. Your monetary backing, emotional support, and prayers have helped get me through some days that were more than challenging. My heart is full of love for you. Saying thank you does not seem to be enough, but please know that everything you ve done for me is greatly appreciated. God bless you all. Yours in Christ, Carol Life Changing Opportunities with Your Sunday School Offerings Each week nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars get dropped into our various Sunday School offering containers. While these individual coins may seem small in value, when added together they have helped to provide an education for a young lady that lives in Kunnathur, India. Baby Kuppusamy, who is in 12th grade, has had the opportunity to participate in the Project Education India program. This program makes it possible for girls to have a safe place to live, receive 3 meals a day, medical care, and the ability to go to school. The majority of the students who stay in a boarding home through this program are children of day laborers. Their parents travel to find work and because of this travel it is very difficult for the children to remain in school. The wages earned by a day laborer is minimal and thus, their parents do not have the financial means to pay for their children to live in a boarding home. That is where your nickels, dimes and quarters have come to help! Through your offerings, we have been able to support Baby's education for 4 years (at a cost of $300/year)! Please keep Baby, and all young people preparing for final exams, in your prayers. May her dedication to education bring her many future opportunities.

It s usually a very informal, but lively discussion and the books vary from classics to popular fiction or non-fiction. The book to be discussed in February is Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. The cast includes Daniel who is modest and sincere, the flamboyant King Darius and three conniving Advisors Astrofar, the Royal Astrologer; Taxalot, the Keeper of the Vault; and Crushafo, the Captain of the Guard. Also important to the script, are the People of Babylon and of course, the hungry, man-eating beasts the Lions. Join us as we unfold a tale of greed, jealousy and evil plotting for personal gain. Find out what happens when a royal decision has unexpected consequences. Share in the triumph of Daniel s faithfulness to God and the miracle of his amazing rescue from the mouths of lions. The musical will be presented on March 19 at 8:00 and 10:30 am worship services and at 3:00 pm at Samaritan Bethany. Rescue in the Night was also presented in 2002 so photos and the program from that production will be on display that day. Want to be involved? There is still time to participate in the cast so come to Monday night rehearsals at 6:30 pm. Help is also needed with the production crew of the musical. Sign up on the production crew sheet at the Welcome Center if you are interested in assisting with the set, props, costumes and/or publicity. Contact Nancy Wales (music@hosannalutheran.org) if you have questions. Epiphany Season Epiphany Day is a Christian festival on January 6 marking the visit of wise men from the East who came to worship the Christ Child and which celebrates the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles. In the dictionary, an epiphany is usually a sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something. It is an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. The length of the season of Epiphany depends on the date of Easter. Epiphany always starts on January 6 and lasts until the start of Lent and could have four Sundays if Easter is early or as many as nine Sundays if Easter is later. This year the season goes until February 28 and includes eight Sundays. The Baptism of Our Lord and the Transfiguration of Jesus are also celebrated during the Epiphany season. Throughout this season it is revealed that Jesus is the Son of God, a divine being. The Epiphany season is symbolized by light, celebrating the manifestation of God s grace to all people - a light shining in darkness. Starting Date is March 6th Hosanna has been invited to volunteer one day per month for Community Food Response North a second location for this organization. The original location, housed at Bethel Lutheran, has been in operation since Community Food Response (CFR) is a not-forprofit, volunteer-led organization which rescues excess food from area restaurants, cafeterias, and grocery stores and distributes it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In 2015, CFR rescued over 9 tons of food and provided nearly 75,000 meals to over 11,000 needy families! The new second location, housed at Bethel Baptist Church, 3945 Tenth Avenue Northwest (next to the Holiday Station Store on 37 th St. Northwest), will serve residents of Gage East Apartments and others living in the north end of Rochester. Please mark your calendars! Hosanna s volunteer day will be the first Monday of each month, starting on March 6th. CFR is closed on major holidays. Shifts are: 2:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Duties of the first shift include: driving to pick up food (1 2 volunteers) and sorting and organizing food (3 5 volunteers.) Duties of the second shift include: filling food bags for clients, breaking down boxes, and rinsing and stacking coolers (5 volunteers.) One of the main pick-up locations for food for CFR North will be the new Hy- Vee Food Store located at 4221 West Circle Drive Northwest. Adults, youth, and families are welcome to help out! Please watch for sign-up sheets at the Welcome Center by early February. Further, an adult forum regarding CFR North will be held on February 5th in the gathering area at 9:15 a.m. Beth Kosta, CFR Board President, will give a presentation and she will also be available to answer questions. ---Keith and Jane Johnson, Community Food Response North, co-coordinators for Hosanna Hosanna s Pantry February 24 & 25 Bring your family along to help with Hosanna s Pantry in Working to provide food to families in need is a wonderful way to serve together. There s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net with questions. Susan s Suppers Do you like to cook? Do you like to socialize? 7 ...sent to serve Outreach Ministries Herald Volume 38 Issue 2 Page 7 Prayer Shawls February 13 & 24 The Prayer Shawl team meets twice a month, once in the evening and once during the day. Meetings are on the 2nd Monday at 6:30 pm and on the 4th Friday at 1:00 pm. If you like to knit or crotchet or would like to learn, you may join this caring ministry at any time. It s also possible to work at home and then bring your finished shawl to the church office. Please contact Carolyn Dahl at crdahl25@charter.net with questions. Members may also stop by or call the office, , to pick up a prayer shawl for family or friends in need of prayer and comfort. Quilters Group February 16th Hosanna s quilters meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 9:00 am 2:00 pm. Coffee and treats are served in the morning and everyone brings their own lunch. You don t have to be an experienced quilter to participate. Quilts are pieced and sewn and tied together. They are given to families in need locally and around the world through Lutheran World Relief. Please contact Julianne Jahn or Janet Walsh with questions. Hosanna s Little Free Pantry It s Here! Hosanna has added a little free pantry to our food ministry. Based on the idea of the little free library, it s a smaller, more private way to help families in need in our community. They can stop by to pick up just a can or box of food or a paper product or personal care item that they desperately need without having to come in to our building to talk to anyone about it. Thank you to Kim Rupprecht for his great work in building our little free pantry! He installed it just below the steps of our lower east parking lot. That puts it off the street and give families some privacy to park and pick up items. Members or neighbors can easily stock it in that location also. There are still decisions to be made: what name should we give it, how should we decorate it when the weather gets warmer (so far it just has a tan base coat), and how can we keep it stocked with the items that families need. We found out that we aren t allowed to use our left over Channel One food from our monthly Hosanna s Pantry, due to USDA regulations. That means we have to use only member donations. We also want to publicize our little free pantry to our neighborhood and our community. If you d like to help make some of those decisions, please contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net or , or Outreach Advocate, Terri Ashworth, at terri@ashworthhome.com.

Balance ended up balancing even though giving was down since we did not have as many expenditures. Two CDs will be purchased to get more money with interest. 10 President s Message Page 10 Herald Volume 38 Issue 2 Hello, In just a few weeks the 2017 Track and Field season will start. Track and Field is one of my favorite times of the year and I look forward to the returning athletes and the new prospects. I have some really good talent coming back on the boy s pole vaulting team and several strong beginners on the girl s team. Coaching energizes me and it makes me happy to see some of the graduates move on and compete at collegiate level. I wish all of them continued success! God continues to provide Hosanna with many blessings, one being the New Cross Tower, which is a strong, visible addition to our church was a great year for Hosanna as we continue to live by our words, God s Work, Our Hands. We demonstrate this in so many ways as we serve our community and continue to support ELCA World Hunger, Channel One, and Good Earth Village. I would like to thank the Church Council, Pastor Meiers, the staff, the ministry teams, committees, and the entire congregation. I enjoyed serving as church president for I learned a lot and continue to grow in my faith and being a faithful servant of God. May God guide Laurie Maidl and the new council as they serve for God bless you all Ray Ashworth Greetings Hosanna friends As I start my year as Hosanna Council President, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and my family. I have been a nurse at Mayo Clinic for 37 years and sincerely enjoy the work I get to do every day. My husband, Dan and I have been married for 33 years. Dan also works at Mayo Clinic, as a groundskeeper at the Mayo Foundation House. We have 3 children. Derrick is currently in his fellowship in Health Care Administration at Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis. Liz is in her third year of Medical School at Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri and Kaitlyn recently started her first semester in the Nursing program at M-State in Moorhead. We also consider Hosanna part of our family. We have received support and friendship from our fellow members. We all grow together as we serve others. Thanks to Ray Ashworth for his leadership for Hosanna this past year. Thank you also to Rachel Gray, our outgoing Council Secretary, Natalie Sand, Discipleship Advocate and Fred Lust, Worship Advocate for their service, commitment and contributions to our congregation. And I would also like to thank Sinde Finnegan and Amy Johnson for their work on the Nominating Committee this past year. We have filled the ballot for 2017 and I look forward to working with the new council members as well as those who will continue in their role again this year. 1 John 4:16 says And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. God s love does live in us and he works through us in many different ways. We can share the love he has for us with others as we continue our service within and outside the walls of Hosanna in this upcoming year. God s Blessings Laurie Maidl

11 Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 38 Issue 2 Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, Epiphany now that is a word you don t hear discussed over the water cooler at work. But it is one of the seasons of the church year and we find ourselves right in the middle of it as you read my article. The root words (epic=upon and phanos=light) help us understand what the word itself means. When light shines on something, it becomes visible, seeable, revealed or manifest. Epiphanies are manifestations or revelations of God in our world, the reality of God in human events. Although it is possible to get abstract, mysterious or symbolical when speaking of epiphanies, an epiphany is a specific, concrete event which causes us to see reality in a different light. An epiphany is an event which by its very nature changes everything. It uncovers the hidden. There are no disinterested observers because only those given eyes to see experience them. Epiphanies are identifying moments because they reveal who God is and who we are. We are midway through the liturgical season of Epiphany. We celebrate a concrete event which changes everything: God in flesh made manifest. This season of the church year allows us the opportunity to see and be changed. May God grant us new vision in this season. We see with the eyes of faith. We see God s Kingdom coming into fruition through His Son, Jesus and our ministry as the church. We see the light of Christ breaking in fresh among us. Once we were in darkness, but now in the Lord we are light. Let us live, then, as children of light. Ephesians 5:8 May the light of Christ shine on you brightly.
