4 Page 4 Herald Volume 37 Issue 7 Memorial Garden Ministries gathered to grow sent to serve Memorial Garden By: Nan Peters Amongst my favorite spring/early summer perennials are the many varieties of the colorful bearded irises. They hold special childhood memories for me and they also serve as an honorary tribute to our former Garden Team Member, the late Pam Fullem. My childhood home in Breckenridge was the home to the grape koolaid scented iris. Transplanted rhizomes continue to give all that come to my front door the same grape kool-aid smell that I enjoyed by my back door growing up. Their smell continues to entice me to try a new variety every now and then. Pam s appreciation of bearded irises was very evident as the Garden Team collaborated on perennials that would give the Memorial Garden an early burst of color in the spring. Pam commented that she would really like to see some bearded irises in the garden as she had too much shade in her yard as irises need about 4-6 hours of sun. She encouraged us to put them in the Memorial Garden and assured us we d enjoy them, giving the Memorial Garden the early burst of color we were looking for. I fondly remember the shopping trip and the careful attention that was made by Pam as we read the various plant tags. We had so much fun looking at all the different varieties. Two of the bearded irises in the Memorial Garden were purchased on that late summer, early fall day; the tall dark purple and the broken color pattern border iris which has streaks of color on the fall of the iris. Their color is enhanced by the majestic tall white bearded irises from Sandy Scheuneman s garden. By the time you read this, the bearded irises will be done blooming in the Memorial Garden and the tall stems will be cut back to the foliage. The foliage won t be fan cut for another six weeks or more allowing the rhizomes time to strengthen before our long harsh winter sets in. Next spring when you see the spectacular bearded irises in the Memorial Garden, affectionately remember our former Garden Team Member, Pam Fullem, whose fascination and love for these colorful spring plants encouraged the Garden Team to put them in the Memorial Garden for everyone to enjoy. Blessed be her memory. Bearded Irises This-n-That Bearded irises are divided into six groups based on bloom time, height, and flower size. They range from the 4 inch miniature dwarf to the tall bearded iris that can grow to about 3 feet tall. Their spectacular color can last for weeks or even months if you have rebloomers. Helpful tips: plant in the sun, keep the rhizomes at soil level, it s okay if the rhizomes show above ground, deadhead each flower as it fades and then the entire stem once all the flowers are done, irises like it dry, divide once they don t seem to bloom much, best to divide in the summer after they are done blooming, fertilize with a early spring and again a month after done blooming, leaf spot and iris borer are common bearded iris problems. Garden Team Member, Nan Peters

5 gathered to grow Outreach Ministries/VBS Pictures Herald Volume 37 Issue 7 Page 5 Papua New Guinea Missionary By Pastor Ann Klavano This is my last newsletter article as my time here in Papua New Guinea is coming to an end. As you read this I'll be packing for my return to the United States. I am in the midst of submitting my name to synods for finding a congregation in the US. I may apply for international mission work again, but want be back in the US for awhile. Please keep the people of Papua New Guinea in your prayers. Special needs for them include: 1) Outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Lutheran Church. Like the ELCA it is a shrinking, aging church. The population of PNG is growing but many young people are leaving the church. The national church leadership has been distracted by a fight over financial issues. With newly elected leadership things may improve. 2) A decrease in the violence in the communities. While I, thankfully, have lived in a quiet location, there is a lot of tribal (wantok) fighting that goes on. This has spilled into the cities where people from one area will riot against the people from another area. These are age old differences that will require a true change of heart by God. While this is my last newsletter article, I plan to occasionally reflect in my blog how I adjust to life back in the US. You are welcome to follow it at While here I have appreciated your support through money, thoughts and prayers. Thank you. These 30 inch width lamps provide more light across several pages of music. The organists and pianists are pleased because now they can see the music much better when it is spread out. Music Ministries Confirmation Camp 2016 Time after Pentecost Season The Sunday following Day of Pentecost, begins the church season called The Time after Pentecost. Another title for this long period in the church calendar is Ordinary Time. It is half of the church year and includes Sundays beginning with Holy Trinity and concluding with Christ the King. This year the season started on May 22 and will conclude on November 20. The focus is more on the church s growth in mission and service as it reflects on the ministry and teachings of Jesus. The main color is green which symbolizes life and growth.

Community Garden Summer Help Needed Hosanna s community garden vegetables are growing with all the rain we ve had so far this summer, and so are the weeds. Help is needed to keep those weeds under control. There will soon be harvesting to do as well. Most of the produce harvested goes to Channel One or to the families who come to Hosanna s Pantry. You re invited to bring your whole family for a few hours of work in Hosanna s community garden. It s a great family experience. You don t need gardening experience to help. There are gardening tools in our shed that anyone may use. The keys to the shed are in the office. Just contact Barb Anderson at barbpaul@charter.net or call with questions.

Nancy Wales, Alice Kub & Karl Dirksen were also in attendance. The Meeting was called to order at 7:08pm by Ray Ashworth, then Pastor Meier shared a devotion with the Council. Council members shared highs & lows. Karl Dirksen shared a breakdown of the costs for the Cross Tower. The total payout so far is $88, We are still waiting on a bill for the extra help & equipment needed to attach the angels to the tower. The Tower may come in slightly over the $90,000 budget. The costs are all covered by the capital campaign donations that have already been given. Soil from the garden area was used for backfill of the tower s foundation. It will be replaced this fall. Les moved (Ron seconded) that we accept May s meeting minutes. It passed unanimously. Terri moved (Laurie seconded) that we accept Pastor Meier s monthly report. It passed unanimously. No concerns from Business & Finance. We are currently $17,000 behind last year s income, but still have money in the bank. The mortgage prepay will be put on hold for a couple months to see where giving is this fall. The Capital Campaign outstanding pledges is around $40,000. This would be used for the Cross Tower Plaza &/or parking lot. Ron moved (Rachel seconded) that we accept the Business & Finance Report. It passed unanimously. Staff & advocate reports were highlighted. The worship team is happy to have the entire congregation together for the worship service for the summer. Healing of the Nations is the worship theme for the summer. Personnel is communicating via for the summer & is going through the personnel manual. A variety of small projects are being tackled by Properties Committee. The AC in the offices was also repaired this week. Fellowship groups are very quiet over the summer. Stephen Ministers are active. MN Foodshare March Campaign was very successful. Rochester had more than any other food shelf in the state - 249,247 lbs of food was donated. The Quilter s Team wrapped each of the high school graduates in a quilt. On June 7th, Scott, Carol, Ray, and Terri attended a dinner and meeting at Mount Olive Church to hear about how Lutheran Social Services is meeting the needs of our Rochester Community. Nancy has been helping Pastor Meiers by meeting with the 7th Grade confirmation groups at Good Earth Village while he meets with the 8th Graders. Pastor Chris Miller will be taking care of the church service for Pastor Meiers this Sunday. He will be back for a Sunday in both July & August. Les moved (Ron seconded) that we adjourn. 10 President s Message Page 10 Hello, Herald Volume 37 Issue 7 As I write this I am thinking of my step-father George Rhinehart who recently passed away. I am saddened by his loss as he was a man I looked up to and respected. He was truly one of the good old guys. He came from a generation of men who took pride in accountability and could find happiness in any job they did because they weren t just working for personal, self-fulfillment, they labored for a bigger purpose to provide financial security for their families. If something was broke he would fix it. If my mom wanted a bookshelf he would build it. He didn t exercise, he worked around the house. Don t get me wrong, he was by no means perfect, none of us are, but he was level-headed and got things done. He was a man on the go! In conversations with George he was quick to remind me and my kids that the good things in life come from honest hard work. Our family is going to miss his political opinions and his answers to how things could be fixed in this world. He was entertaining none the less, but he made you think. This past month our services focused on Personal Healing. It will take time for our family to heal with his passing just as it has with other loved ones. But there are ways we can cope. As a Stephen Minister I look back on all of my training and take comfort in what I learned. We would like to thank you for your prayers, concerns, and cards during these past couple of months. One card we received had this beautiful picture of our Memorial Garden. The colorful flowers and plants with the cross visible give us a sense of peace and hope. Below are pictures of George working in his garden last summer and a picture of the beautiful landscaping he and my mom created with love around their home. President Ray Ashworth

11 Pastor Meiers Page Herald Volume 37 Issue 7 Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, Hosanna is a member congregation at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Our very name defines our purpose and task. We are Evangelical: We have a story to tell. It is the story entrusted to all Christians. It is the story of God who created us. It is the story of God who redeemed us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And it is the story of God whose Spirit guides us through this life, and leads us to that life with God that has no ending. We are Lutheran. We are one of many historical churches that treasure our rich heritage of Word and Sacrament Ministry, liturgy, music, and nearly five hundred years of Lutheran Theology (2017 marks the 500 th year celebration of the Lutheran Reformation). We exist as a congregation to offer God s blessing to our members, the Rochester Community, and our neighbors around the globe. We are Church. We are a community of believers who are bounded together by our mutual faith in Jesus Christ. Although we are a community consisting of people with wide differences in personality, background, vocation and numerous other areas, our commonality is found in our shared faith in our Lord Jesus. We are one body in Christ. We are in America. As we celebrate our Independence as a nation this 4 th of July, we return thanks, to God for our country, The United States of America, where we can live, worship and work enjoying the freedoms our nation provides us. Hosanna Lutheran Church is in the United States of America, Minnesota, Olmsted County and Rochester. This is our context in which we originate our identity and our ministry. We are a local congregation with a worldwide ministry. We serve the Rochester Area, provide for the needs of our members, but also reach out to those in need worldwide with food, clothing, quilts, shelter and the good news of the gospel. Celebrate the privilege that is yours as a member of Hosanna, the E.L.C.A. and the body of Christ, the Church. Live, worship, serve and love as children of God. God bless and keep you. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers
