Dave will share about what it is like to have bilateral cochlear implants, the realities of hearing loss and the importance of timely rehabilitation, the impact faith in God through Jesus has for his life within his current situation, and his struggles with experiencing music (both listening to itr and sharing music through performance). The Lord has definitely taken Dave through a whirlwind of medial treaments during the last tow months, with one additional hurdle yet to face in February (open heart surgery and the recovery and rehab to follow). Please plan to join Dave on Sunday, February 3 to hear about how God, through the Holy Spirit, is using his life situation to bolster faith and transform difficult tests into viable, enduring testimony for His glory. February 10-What Does it Mean to be a Christian/ Faith and Sin This is the first of a four part series presented on video by Herbert Chilstrom, former presiding bishop of the ELCA. This session will explore four important concepts of our Christian faith: Relationship, Why this brokenness? Justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and Faith and hope. February 17 - Word, Sacraments, and Worship This second session of What does it mean to be a Christian teaches the basic theme which underlie our Lutheran understanding of the Word, the Sacraments, and Worship. Bishop Chilstrom bases his teaching of this topic on the Third Commandment, Remember the Sabbath, to keep it Holy. February 24 - Life in Family and Community Session three of What does it mean to be a Christian explores Christian life lived in community. Jesus said, where two or three are gathered in my name, I am among them. (Matthew 18: 20) Jesus is clear about faith being lived out in community.

It meets on the third Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Members take turns bringing coffee and treats. It s usually a very informal, but lively discussion and the books vary from classics to popular fiction or nonfiction. The book to be discussed in February is In the Garden of the Beasts by Erik Larsen. It describes the career of William Dodd who becomes America s first ambassador to Hitler s Nazi Germany during in the years before the start of World War II. It provides a dramatic eye witness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of Jewish persecution, press censorship and violence. It speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin and Europe were at war. The books to be discussed through the spring include: March 16 Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger Boy Scout Sunday is February 10 th Thank you to the Boy Scouts for their service to Hosanna and to our community! At the beginning of worship on February 10 th, Boy Scouts will conduct a flag ceremony and then lead the congregation in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Hosanna s 28 th Intergenerational Musical March 17 8:00 and 10:30 am at Hosanna 3:00pm at Samaritan Bethany on 8 th Hosanna s 2019 intergenerational musical, Nic at Night, will be presented on March 17 in the morning and in the afternoon. The musical is based on the three times Nicodemus, a Pharisee, is mentioned in the Bible and is divided into these acts: John 3:1-21 tells of Nicodemus approaching Jesus at night; John 7:45-52 relates the nighttime meeting of the Sanhedrin when Nicodemus defends Jesus; and John 19:38-40 reports Nicodemus selfless ministry to Jesus the night of Jesus death. This play within a play helps us examine whether our lives could be divided into those three acts: seeking Jesus, believing Jesus, and serving Jesus. The cast is open to Kindergarten students adults. Rehearsals began Monday, January 28, but there is still time join the cast and be a part of the story. The main chorus rehearsals are on Mondays at 6:30 pm with additional rehearsals scheduled as needed. Saturday morning rehearsals will be March 2, 9 and 16. Enter it on your calendar to attend and bring friends to see it. Help is also needed with the production crew. Sign up on the sheet at the Welcome Center if you are interested in assisting with the set, props, costumes and/or publicity. Contact Nancy Wales (music@hosannalutheran.org) if you have questions. The work began in Chicago's inner city, and spread and evolved with contributions from all over the country. It was originally published in 1972, a time when guitars were first being introduced into formal worship services. We will be using keyboard, guitar, bass and flute as accompaniment. In the acknowledgments Gorman wrote: When I was paralyzed because it seemed that the whole world was saying, No!, Phil (the pastor at his church) clearly and simply said, Pick up your guitar and

10 Page 10 President s Page Members and Friends of Hosanna, Herald Volume 40 Issue 2 Paul starts many of his letters with Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. What a great way to greet you! May God grant you grace and peace in Traditionally the new council president introduces himself in the February newsletter. Here it goes (I ll try to avoid this sounding like a Christmas letter). Janet and I have been at Hosanna for over 35 years. As young single adults we started sharing rides to choir and have been sharing rides ever since. We also have been working for IBM for over 35 years. Our oldest daughter Kristen is a chaplain intern at a hospital in York, PA. She was married last summer, and her husband Wicky received his first call to a church in central PA. He will be ordained in a couple weeks. Eric is a chemical engineer for Cargill in Pella, IA. Julie graduated from the U of M at Christmas and works at IBM in finance. Hosanna is also a big part of our family. Our children were all baptized and confirmed at Hosanna. As a family we enjoyed participating in the various music ministries, especially the annual Hosanna musical. I think at least one member of our family has been involved in every musical. I have been a trustee, council secretary, and worship advocate. I look forward to serving as council president in As the new council meets for the first time in February, it is important to thank those who are completing their terms. We thank them for their service: Lisa King as President, Chris Meiers as Worship advocate, Les Fullem as Support advocate, Kathy Brandt-Rucker as Discipleship advocate. Thank you! Also, thanks to our 2018 nominating committee for finding great council members for The committee includes Lisa King, Sinde Finnegan, Ruth Vining and Paul Solum. I look forward to working with the new members of the council: Taylor Sass (Discipleship), Amy Johnson (Worship), Neil Wiegand (Support), and Rachel Gray (President-elect). Thank you for providing leadership for our congregation! 1 Samuel 12:24 says But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. God has done great things for our congregation, and sent us to serve our community. Thank you for all the ministry you do. I look forward to working with you in Dave Wall Lisa passing the gavel to Dave at the Annual meeting 2019

11 Herald Volume 40 Issue 2 Pastor Meier s Page Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, Our congregation is a member of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). The first word describes who we are and what we do as a church. Our very nature is to be evangelical. The church was born and lives to reach out to the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. As soon as a congregation looks only inward, it begins to die. That is why our very name holds up the priority of evangelism. Do you know of a friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker who has no church home? Take a moment to invite them to worship. That small act is the heart of evangelism. God gives each of us a unique context in which to do outreach. Each individual member of Hosanna has a network of family, friends, neighbors, classmates and co-workers that none other duplicates. Needs exist in every community and country in the world, but those closest to us are the ones we are able to reach, serve and encourage on a personal level. A three-year in-depth study was conducted by the national church of both active and inactive members of local congregations concerning their reasons for joining or leaving their churches. Inactive members said they were too busy to be involved, or that religion wasn t important enough. Many reported they were taking a temporary break from the church but planned to return. And others felt they didn t seem to fit in. Some with special ministry needs like singles, divorced, minority groups or young adults, felt ignored. Perhaps the best news is that more than half of those in-actives questioned felt their inactivity was only temporary and stated that they intended to return to the church some time in the future. This study seems to say that we need to assure all members that they are needed for the life and mission of our congregation now. Of 48 possible reasons for joining a congregation, the top reasons given by new members responding to the survey were: for the sake of their children, because of the influence of worship, the personal characteristics of the pastor, or to search for meaning. One doesn t need to think hard and long to see some obvious implications for outreach ministry in these findings. Clearly, the study confirms our needs to give high priority to our ministry to children and parents. A second lesson from these findings is that what goes on at worship services is seen as far more than a perfunctory ritual by most people. This study demonstrates our need to care for each other as members of Hosanna and reach out to those beyond our walls. We are disciples of Christ who called to be sensitive to the needs of others within our congregation and those who have yet to hear and respond to the love of God found in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are each privileged to be an ambassador for Christ as we are called to discipleship in our Baptism. Yours in Christ Pastor Bill Meiers.
