3 Page 3 Herald Volume 39 Issue 3 Dear Members of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod, I give thanks to God and to you for the great privilege of serving as your bishop. As bishop, I have had the opportunity to experience a deeper relationship with many of our rostered leaders, lay leaders and congregations. As we have prayed and planned and worked together over the past 4 ½ years, it has been a source of great joy to see the movement and leading of the Spirit in our midst. In June 2019, the Southeastern Minnesota Synod will once again gather to elect a bishop. As we move toward that time, I want you to know that I will not be available for a 2nd term as bishop. The primary reason for that decision is my desire to retire and be more available to my family. I have experienced much joy in this call as bishop, but I also realize that it has meant much time away from my family. Some may be wondering if other members of the staff in the Office of Bishop will be open to being nominated. Rev. Susan Miller, Assistant to the Bishop for Call Process, will also be retiring and therefore not available as a nominee. Rev. Pete Reuss, Director for Evangelical Mission & Assistant to the Bishop, has also determined that he will not be available as a nominee. I invite all of you into a Season of Prayer in preparation for the process to call a new bishop. This Season of Prayer will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 14, and continue through the Day of Pentecost, May 20. Each week you will be provided with a scripture reading, meditation written by a member of the synod, question for reflection, prayer, and a spiritual practice. I pray these weekly reflections will help you experience the presence of God through a variety of biblical call stories as you reflect on the Spirit s movement in the discernment process of calling a new bishop. The Season of Prayer contributions will be available every Wednesday through RCWeekly and also online at I have been delighted to see the deep level of appreciation and respect that you have for the Office of the Bishop, and I trust that will continue to be the case as together, and guided by the Spirit, you discern who will be the next bishop of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod. Peace & Joy in Christ, Rev. Steve Delzer Bishop

6 Herald Volume 39 Issue 3 Page 6 Hosanna Lutheran Church February 13, 2018 Council Minutes Council Page gathered to grow...sent to serve. Pastor s Report: Les moved (Sinde seconded) that we accept his January report. It passed unanimously. We were reminded of the SE MN Synod Renew Conference Saturday, February 24 from 10am to 3pm at Trinity Lutheran in Owatonna. The Zumbro River Conference Assembly is immediately following the conference. The main task is to elect delegates for the ELCA National Assembly in Chicago, IL. The Synod Meeting is May 4 & 5 at the Mankato Civic Center. The cost of lodging may be covered. Hosanna is allowed three voting members, one more is needed to attend. Business & Finance: Sinde moved (Dawn seconded) that we accept the January report. It passed unanimously. Hosanna is under budget! Kelly Gangelhof has moved out of Personnel to an Outreach position. Faith Formation: The Council devotion to be bold and eager was encouraging considering upcoming events. It is necessary to use the web site to check and sign up for space due to increased activity. It can be added to a smart phone calendar. Vibrant Faith guidance is still being used and the challenges are still being worked on. Fellowship: A team lead is needed for funeral services. Hopefully more opportunities for fellowship will be created! A Stephen Ministry class is coming up soon due to interest from more than just Hosanna members. Hosanna is the only congregation with an active Stephen Ministry program! Support: The garbage disposal sounds bad and will be checked out. Please remember if you ve signed up to shovel check the weather and meet those needs. The annual visit of the Fire Marshall found five violations/concerns. Too much storage in the west side entrance, and near the emergency exit. Too much janitorial storage in the east end and in the basement. Anytime someone sleeps in church, a smoke detector is needed in the room. This can be fixed by adding a portable smoke detector. There was also a suggestion to check the emergency lighting. 7 Page 7 Herald Volume 39 Issue 3 Outreach Ministries...sent to serve. Say Hello to your new Outreach Advocates Dawn: That s right you have 2 Outreach Advocates this year. Kelly: Hi there- meet Dawn Koster one of your new co-chairs of Outreach Advocate. Dawn: And this is Kelly Gangelhoff who is the other co-chair for Outreach Advocate. Kelly: We decided to be co-chairs to try out a new concept this year. Dawn: We plan to work together (we do that really well) to be the best cochairs for Outreach. Kelly: My family includes my husband Dale (of 30 years), my daughters Amanda (29), Allison (24) and my son Andrew (19) and my granddaughters Ava (5) and Amara (2). There is constant activity in our house. I have been on the Personnel Committee for many years now and decided it was time for a change. When asked if I would like to serve with Dawn as an advocate it was a no brainer for me. We have worked together for many years in the past and it was very enjoyable. I am very excited to work with Dawn in this new role. Dawn: My family includes my husband Brent (of 28 years) and my son Brandon (23) and Danielle who just turned 19. Wow, I feel old! With both kids out of the house, I am able to do more of my own things. When I was approached for this position and the opportunity to work with Kelly, I said yes. Kelly is such an outgoing and open person that I think between the two of us, we will come with great ideas for Hosanna. Kelly: We are both currently serving on various ministry teams under the outreach area. This will help us as we go forward in our new role. Dawn: We are also blessed to have great leaders on these ministry teams, which will make our roles as advocates easier. You get two of us for the price of one! Kelly: We have big shoes to fill, but we are up to the challenge. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, ideas or concerns that you may have. us at: outreach@hosannalutheran.org or Dawn s phone number is and mine is Community Food Response North Hosanna has committed to providing volunteers to pick up, sort, and distribute food for Community Food Response North (CFR North) on the first Monday of each month. Hosanna Fellowship Opportunity At 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 25th, the Rochester Civic Theatre will be presenting the musical The Addams Family. The Addams Family, a musical comedy, debuted on Broadway in 2010 and was nominated for both Tony and Drama Desk Awards. The show is based on the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The Addams Family characters were created by Charles Addams in his single-panel gag cartoons, who depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. If you attended and enjoyed (how could you not) other RCT musicals such as The Rocky Horror Show or Sweeny Todd or even if you didn t, you will really enjoy this musical. We have numerous $25.00 each for Sunday, March 25th at 2 PM. Following the performance, we will have 5:00 PM reservations for dinner at a location to be determined. Questions can be directed to Paul Anderson at or barbpaul@charter.net.

10 Page 10 Herald Volume 39 Issue 3 President s Page Hosanna s Intergenerational Musical, The Amazing Grace Race is about to be presented! The staging is set the music and lines are memorized and the actors are prepared for READY, SET and GO... The race is on! I am always in awe about these wonderful productions: the interaction between those of all ages, the delight in the kid s faces as well as the adults, the energy and the excitement in both song and voice. It is truly intergenerational: as a matter of fact we have Dale, Amanda and Ava; three generations of Ganglehoffs performing in the musical this year! I am proud to say to say that my granddaughter, Ava, is also in the musical this year with me! There are many hours that go along with the setup, the costumes, practicing and preparation. Annually, each story presented is always powerful and meaningful. This year s story is no different; it tells us that the race in our life is full of twists and turns, valleys and/ or difficult paths. It isn t always a straight, smooth path, and sometimes we can lose sight of God. However, HE never turns away from us, ever, even if we take that detour. One of the most powerful songs in the musical, in my opinion, is Find Us Faithful. One verse says we re runners on the journey of the narrow road, and those who ve gone before us tow the way; cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary, and their lives a stirring testament to God s sustaining grace. What a message this song portrays! We now are also midway through the season of Lent, which is a time for preparation. As a Christian family of faith, we walk with Jesus on these 40 days on His way to the cross, our Salvation! At this time of year, we think about what Jesus did for us and follow His steps along His journey. We all run the race of life. Sometimes it isn t easy. Sometimes, the paths take us to places we could never anticipate or even want to visit. Remember, Jesus journey wasn t always easy either. Let s remember to reflect on the cross, pray daily, give forgiveness, love and support all.. and ask Jesus to show us how follow Him, not in His steps, but in our shoes and to ask ourselves, what would Jesus do? In closing, Hebrews 12: 1-2 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Keep walking in HIS steps.we welcome all to join in watching the presentation of The Amazing Grace Race and to walk with Jesus in the 40 days of Lent.and always.. In His steps in our shoes.. God s Blessings! Lisa All women are invited to the Zumbro River Conference WELCA 2018 Spring Event. 11 Herald Volume 39 Issue 3 Pastor Meier s Page Page 11 Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, The Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday and will continue for forty days which culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter. The word Lent originally meant Spring. It is to be understood as a time to reflect on Baptism and its significance for each of us as this sacrament connects our lives with the death and resurrection of Jesus. Lent is, therefore, a time for rebirth and renewal in preparation for the celebration of Easter. In the gospels, one finds the constant coming together of the topics of the cross and discipleship. For example: the passion accounts of Jesus as recorded in St. Mark always points us from Jesus cross to our own discipleship, that which we do in the world as faithful followers of Christ. The consideration of the suffering and death of Jesus is primarily concentrated during Holy Week which begins on Palm Sunday or Sunday of the Passion. We are all familiar with the palms we wave at the entrance to the worship service on Palm Sunday, but the dominate theme of that service is the Passion of our Lord. The reason Jesus entered Jerusalem with shouts of Hosanna was his coming crucifixion. Palm Sunday, March 25, signals our entrance into Holy Week for As we walk with Jesus from his entrance into Jerusalem to his arrest, trial, crucifixion, burial, and eventual triumph over death in his resurrection, may we gather together as the family of faith here at Hosanna at the foot of the cross to once again marvel at the gracious love of God poured out for us in the sacrifice of God s own son, Jesus Christ. Our Lenten journey to the Easter Vigil brings us to the cross and then empty tomb. Our baptism into Christ connects our lives to the forgiveness and salvation realized in Jesus sacrifice for us. Martin Luther makes this clear in his small catechism What gifts or benefits does Baptism grant? Answer: It brings about forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe it, as the Word and promise of God declare. Thanks be to God for all God s benefits given to us in Jesus and made manifest through our baptism into Christ. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers February Pastoral Acts Funeral: Al Wildfeuer 2/17/18 (Pastor Audrey Lukaska presiding)
