This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. 2 * HYMN OF PRAISE No. 466 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Prayer Request cards are collected by the Usher.) * PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) God of intervention and challenge, we are continually amazed by your readiness to defy conventions, to step out of an insular and limited context, to reveal the breadth of your love for all your people. You are not content just to pacify those who think of themselves as chosen or faithful ; to make those within the church think of themselves as special. Instead your compass of love is directed towards all. Jesus, challenge those who hear you to think differently. Broaden the horizons of our vision, even if this irks those of us who prefer cozy teaching. Lord, in your mercy forgive us and expand our sense of your goodness and love. Let us be inspired by the messages of Jesus and never tire from being surprised at how the Gospel has the power to move us closer and closer to truth. Amen. * SILENT PRAYER *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: The words of Jesus pardon are trustworthy and true: Your faith has made you well. People: May our hearts overflow with gratitude at the gift of God s mercy, Leader: may we also be merciful in our turn. All: In the name of Christ, Amen. * PRAYER RESPONSE - Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen, Amen YOUTH DRAMA OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 146 (read responsively) CHOIR ANTHEM Lead Me to That Rock Arr. by Camp Kirkland NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Luke 4:4-30 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! SERMON *HYMN OF HOPE Who Is This Man? (Insert) Rev. Greg Bolt * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. (The Apostles Creed) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Petitions Pastoral Prayer The Lord s Prayer Response (p. 16 in hymnal) WORSHIP THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS Offertory: Love Has Come --setting E. 3 Luke 4: Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. 14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favour. 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? 23 He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. 24 And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s home town. 25 But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; 26 yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. 27 There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Psalm 146 (to be read responsively) 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! 2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. 4 When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. 5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, 6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith for ever; 7 who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; 8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. 9 The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 10 The LORD will reign for ever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD! FRIENDS AND GUESTS: Welcome to First Presbyterian Church. May God s presence be with us and God s blessings be upon us as we worship together today. FAITH IN ACTION NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: Many snow-birds are Faith in Action volunteer drivers. Some drivers may be gone for 3-6 months and requests for assistance often increase during the cold weather. Our drivers often tell us that serving as a Faith in Action volunteer is extremely rewarding. Each individual driver s schedule is assessed as to how often he/she wants to drive and what day/time works for them. We need additional drivers for friendly visitors, as well. Please talk to Dolores Rootes, our church coordinator, or call the Faith in Action office at (651) if this interests you. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! If you are able to help out on Sunday mornings by either being an usher, greeter or lay leader, please let Susan Crocker (Usher coordinator), Bonnie Lohmann (Greeter coordinator), or Chris Rayner (Lay leader coordinator) know. Also, there is a sign-up sheet for hosting Fellowship located on the kiosk next to the flower calendar for anyone wishing to help out. Your help is much needed and greatly appreciated! GriefShare will begin a new session on Monday, January 9 th from 7-8:30 p.m. at First Covenant Church in Red Wing. This group is facilitated by people who have lost a loved one of their own. Call Tina at (651) or Suzy at (507) if you are interested or have any questions. THE 162 nd ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING will be held on January 29, 2017 during worship. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
