May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called "Lady Month," which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. 3 Sixth Sunday of Easter In today's Gospel from John, Jesus speaks of his disciples as his friends. God's invitation to loving friendship is present in all of our readings. God offers a relationship of mutual knowledge and trust. As with our ordinary human friendships, a space is created where we can relax, rest, and be playful with each other. We can feel safe enough to reveal our inner selves to each other, and to heal divisions between us. Friendship with God is not burdensome or dutiful, as with slaves and masters, because it leads to a shared joy. Nor is the friendship shallow or sentimental, because it involves a mutual laying down of one's self. Friendship with God eventually means extending this shared love to others, and becoming a part of the wider circle of God's friends. God longs to be friends with us, and extends an invitation. MULTIPLE CONVERSIONS The story described in our first reading is a major turning point, both in the book of Acts and in the early Christian community. In Acts 10 and 11, we hear a story of multiple conversions: of Cornelius, of Peter, and of the church. Cornelius embraced the path of Jesus and received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter, through his earlier visions and the pouring out of the Spirit on Gentiles, began to understand how God was breaking through his pre-conceived ideas. The story concludes in the next scene with the meeting of the leaders in Jerusalem. As Peter described to them what happened to him and to Cornelius, the leaders were amazed at what God was doing. God was breaking down barriers and inviting everyone to God's table. The church realized that it had to rethink how it understands God and itself as church. OUT AHEAD OF US In the book of Acts, we learn that God is the primary active agent in the world. God is indeed active within the church. But here we learn that the Holy Spirit also is out ahead of us, working in the lives and communities of people who are different from us. God is busy within and among people who don't know God, or who understand God differently, or who struggle to understand God. Like Peter and the early church, many of us somehow learned, often in childhood, whom to trust and who should be avoided. God, however, seems to be fond of crossing boundaries. The Spirit is stirring in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and public spaces. Many of us will need to learn to pay attention to this. The Spirit invites us to find God there and to join in God's work. Our parishes are invited to embrace our local communities. As we listen and learn from our neighbors and share God's love with them, we will deepen our understanding of being the church today. 6 Sixth Sunday of Easter TRUE FRIENDSHIP True friendship takes hard work. Friendship entails walking with another through life's moments of joy as well as moments of deep disappointment and failure. Friendships need constant nurturing. Friends need to be present to one another. Friends need to talk. Friends need to be honestly critical. Friends need time to connect. In today's Gospel, the Lord Jesus calls his followers "friends." If we count ourselves among the followers of the Lord, this means that in baptism we have entered a friendship with the Lord Jesus. In order to nurture our friendship with the Lord, we commit ourselves to walking with him through life's joys and disappointments. Most of us have people in our lives with whom we have lost touch. We know the experience of the diminished bond of friendship. Most of us can also admit that we really have only so much time and energy to commit to nurturing one or a few real friendships. How do we nurture our friendship with the Lord Jesus? NURTURING OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH THE LORD If we believe that Christ is truly present in his word, in the Eucharist, in those who minister to us, and in the gathered assembly of believers, we are assured of finding many opportunities to be present to the Lord. So often, we miss these opportunities and our friendship with the Lord becomes strained. Perhaps today is the day to recommit ourselves to strengthening our friendship with the Lord, who chose us in baptism to be his friend. The root of friendship, of course, is selfless love. Today we are called to bask in the love of God-to feel God's loving presence through the experience of worship and the company of those dedicated to sharing in God's love. Let us rejoice in the love shown to us by God. Copyright (c) 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
