Acts 5:38b-39b TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION O en, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may no ce three interwoven ac vi es. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflec ve than ever before, reviewing life s journey in gra tude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened un l even an ice cube brushed against the lips is sa sfying. Third, persons who are dying o en make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite chari es. Prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving: with these three pillars of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and an cipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Chris an experiences the same power and presence at the end of life s journey: Christ to the rescue and the las ng joy of heaven. James Field, Copyright J. S. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month or by appt. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office a week prior to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are heard after mass on the weekdays or on Sunday half hour before mass time. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8 th grade or above. They must have completed the 8 th grade religious education class and optimally the 7 th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. QUINCEANERAS St. Michael the Archangel Parish does not have Quinceaneras at this time. 3 Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, and then the devil tested him. Moses and the Israelites had been in the desert for forty years before being led to the land of milk and honey. There were times when they called out to God, sure that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. We sometimes spend time in the desert as well. Not a literal desert most of the time, but a desert in which it seems difficult to perceive God s presence, times when we face difficulty and are tempted to leave God s ways behind. On this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus shows us what to do in these moments: stand firm and trust in God. STAND FIRM It may be difficult for us to imagine Jesus being tempted. He was God, after all. But he was also fully human, and faced the temptations and trials of life just like the rest of us. In fact, this is one of the key aspects of our faith. Jesus came to be one with us in all things but sin. He understands our weaknesses and the difficulties that sometimes happen in life, and he is with us, strengthening us to stand firm in faith, as he did in the desert, throughout his earthly ministry, and on the cross. TRUST IN GOD When Moses and the Israelites were in the desert, they sometimes grumbled. Fearful and anxious, they questioned whether God was really with them, in spite of the many signs and wonders of God s fidelity to them. Gradually, they learned to trust that God would always lead and be with them. They grew in awareness of God s presence, and were thankful for the gifts of God in their midst. In celebrating the first harvest in the Promised Land, they gave their first fruits back to God as a sign of their gratitude. Have you ever grumbled at God in a time of anxiety or worry? At times, we may be tempted to turn away from the life to which we are called. It is in just such moments that we may learn from Jesus, who responded to temptation by turning toward God and trusting God s will completely. Look around. Be attentive to the many blessings in your life, and know that all good things come from God. Lent is a season when we turn our lives around, opening our hearts and lives to see the Lord s goodness and responding to it with our lives. Let us follow Jesus out of the desert, ready to give of our first fruits, the fruits of our lives, talents, resources, and faith.
