Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: Adoration 9am (following mass) As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase the Catholic vote is heard. It s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism. Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the Mass on the first Friday of each month or by appt. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are heard after mass on the weekdays or on Sunday half hour before mass time. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8th grade or above. They must have completed the 8th grade religious education class and optimally the 7th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. 3 STOLEN THUNDER By the time the Gospels were written, James and John, sons of Zebedee (sons of thunder ) were revered leaders of the Christian community. It is a common device of the evangelists to place the failings of the early Christians on the shoulders of their leaders to illustrate a point about discipleship, and perhaps to comfort them with the fact that Jesus chose common, flawed humans to spread the Good News. It must have seemed doubly odd that these two, already honored and revered, were chastised by Jesus when they requested positions of honor. Jesus, as it were, stole their thunder, and in the Gospel he likewise steals the thunder of the others who get indignant at James and John. Today s readings from Isaiah and Hebrews, along with Jesus as portrayed in Mark, steal the thunder of the places of honor they had attained by reminding us that it is in the humility of service that we come to know the reign of God in our midst. SERVANT CHRIST, SERVANT CHURCH In Matthew s Gospel, it is the mother of James and John who makes the request of Jesus (Mark omits this scene). It is only natural for mothers to want to see their sons get ahead in the world, just as it is for us as individuals to seek those positions of honor and power. But again it is the lesson of Jesus, along with the lessons of Isaiah and Hebrews, that reminds us that we need to examine constantly our only natural ways of living to make sure that we are living as Christ, the head of the church. When Isaiah writes of the Suffering Servant, it can be seen as a prophecy of Jesus; but it is also a prophecy of the ongoing presence of Jesus, the church. When the author of Hebrews writes of the weakness known by Christ the great High Priest, it is also about the need for weakness on the part of the Body of Christ, the church. In this way the scriptures today show all of us, the baptized, the church, how we must continue to be the Servant Christ for the life of the world. TODAY S READINGS First Reading My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). St. Juan Diego helped bring Christ s transforming love to cultures gripped by oppression and death. Like St. Juan Diego, let us embrace our daily mission to help others encounter God s transforming, life-giving love. We are called by name to be disciples of Christ, pray that he give us courage to open our hearts to those who are most vulnerable during this Respect Life Month and always. Heavenly Father, give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. We are called to be messengers of God's love, treating one another as cherished and chosen by Him. In doing so, we help build a culture that respects all human life. Every person is sent. Every Life is Worth Living Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life. Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy.
