Acts 5:38b-39b TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Saturday s feast of the Presenta on is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was o en at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of fes vity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even a er gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and crea on: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beau ful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of bap sm, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month or by appt. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office a week prior to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are heard after mass on the weekdays or on Sunday half hour before mass time. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8 th grade or above. They must have completed the 8 th grade religious education class and optimally the 7 th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. QUINCEANERAS St. Michael the Archangel Parish does not have Quinceaneras at this time. 3 Scripture has always held God s law to be the path to human happiness. In today s first reading, Ezra the priest reads the scroll of the law to the people returned from exile. They weep then are joyful. Israel s relationship with God had always been defined by how they kept and lived God s law. The author of Psalm 96 likewise praises the law of God as the source of wisdom, joy and enlightenment, purity and justice. In his advice to the bickering Corinthians, Paul points out that, just as God has made all parts of a human body essential for the health of the whole, living as Christ s body requires that each member be recognized as necessary for the good of all. Finally, in Luke s Gospel Jesus claims that the Spirit is sending him to relieve human suffering. Like Ezra, he is reading from a scroll, proclaiming God s law of mercy to those in need. A PARTY? TO CELEBRATE RULES? REALLY? Twenty-first-century American culture relies so much on brief social media texts Facebook, Twitter that we might wonder how the men, women, and those children old enough to understand (Nehemiah 8:2) could spend the entire morning listening to Ezra the priest read from the book of Jewish law. Returning home after seventy years of exile, the people had to rebuild their homeland the city of Jerusalem, the temple, social and economic structures all of it. Listening to Ezra reading the ancient law seems to have reconnected the people to traditions that gave meaning to all their struggles. They were weeping tears of joy! The psalmist is likewise moved by the beauty of God s law. It is not a bothersome restriction on human behavior, but a wise guide for people seeking wisdom and enduring happiness. At the conclusion of his reading, Ezra instructs them to be joyful, to eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks... for today is holy to our L (Nehemiah 8:10). Rejoicing is the proper response to the rediscovery of God s law. AND EV ERY ONE GETS TO ATTEND! Ezra also tells the people to allot portions to those who had nothing prepared, to make sure that everyone is included, whether or not they had anything to share. When Jesus reads a much shorter passage to a much smaller assembly in the synagogue, he announces his intention to ensure that no one is excluded. The Spirit of the Lord is leading him to heal the afflictions of those who are almost routinely exiled from mainstream society, people who are poor, people who have been in prison, people with physical or mental disabilities. Unlike Jesus, we cannot work miracles to heal them or mitigate their conditions; but like Jesus, we can work to bring these exiles to a homeland where God s law ensures that everyone can rejoice, because everyone is included. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Rejoicing in the L must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Classes are Sundays after 10am Mass and will run until 12:30pm. To register your teen for the year, please contact (480) VOLUNTEER MONTH Join us next month as we showcase St. Michael the Archangel s parish ministries. Various ministries will be featured each weekend. You will have an opportunity to learn about the ministries and talk to people who can answer your ques ons about your volunteer op ons. On February 2 nd and 3 rd we will showcase our Boy Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Red Hats and Lectors. We look forward to seeing you. Remember: Volunteers are a Gi to your parish Do You Know? The homebound ministry has individuals who enjoy doing this. Maybe, know someone who would like to become a part of this ministry. This is a rewarding ministry. Safe Environment The next safe environment training will be held in February. All volunteers are required to take S.E.T before you can volunteer for a ministry. Time for renewal?
