Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith's intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father's wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Are you new to St. Michael the Archangel Church? We welcome you and we ask that you please take a few moments to register. 6 August L6,20LL American flag in the sanctuary By Father Rocky Hoffman x We have had the American Flag at the side of the sanctuary for years and years and now our new pastor has decided he doesn't want it there, onty for national holidays. He really did not give us a very good reason for the change other than saying the flag is not liturgically correct. Is this something new? Neither the Code of Canon Law nor the General Instruction of the Roman Missal nor any other document of universal jurisdiction mentions the display of a national flag in a Catholic church. The display of the American flag is not prohibited, but the U.s. Bishop's committee on the Liturgy (nonhierarchical) has discouraged the display of the flag in the sanctuary of the church. Ultimately, it would be up to the local bishop to decide, and usually he would leave that up to the pastor who should have the best sense of the opinion of the parishioners. Over the past 15 years during service projects in Mexico I have had the good fortune of visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. That shrine has a very large Mexican flag in the sanctuary, as well as national flags from all of the nations of the Americas. It reminds me of the Olympics or the United Nations, and given the extraordinary international importance of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the flags seem to fit. Normally, when the American flag is displayed in the sanctuary, it is placed on the right side of the Church (the epistle side) and the Vatican flag or papal flag balances it off on the left side of the Church (the Gospel side), since the flag of the Holy See takes precedence in the Catholic Church over our national flag. Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, JCD (Fr. Rocky) is Executive Director of Retevant Radio. Ordained as a priest for Opus Dei in 1992 by Blessed lohn paul II, he holds a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical LJniversity of the Hoty Cross, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and a BA in History from Northwestern University. His Question and Answer column appears in several Catholic newspapers and magazines across the

7 Whv is Marv on the right and Jesus on the left in Ghurch? ln Catholic churches, from the perspective of "God" (if we take God to be facing the people and the people facing toward the tabemacle where God is present in the Eucharistic elements), statues of Mary are always to the right of the tabernacle and statues of Jesus to the left of the tabernacle. What, if any, is the reason for this? Wouldn't it make more sense to have Jesus to the right of the tabernacle seeing as the Creed says "and pesusl sits at the right hand of the Father from where He will come in 9lory..."? Best Answer: I think you are confusing a statue of St. Joseph with a statue of Jesus. Jesus is the guy on the crucifix, which is in the middle. Mary is on his right, and Joseph on his left. This is the traditional set-up: The stand on the right side of the church as you face the Altar (the "Episile side") from where the Epistles are read (and which can be used by lay-people). Not all churches have both a lectern and a pulpit (see above); some just have one single speaker,s podium called an ambo. Note that the Epistle side of the church is also informally referred to as the "St. Joseph side" of the church because it is there a statue of him is often placed. You can remember which side of the Church is which by taking the vantage point of Christ on the Crucifix: His right is the Gospel/Mary side of the Church; His left is the Epistle/Joseph side of the Church. Mary and the Gospel are greater than Joseph and the Epistle so are at Jesus'right. This will be so unless there is a statue of, say, our Lord, in which case it will be placed to the right of Jesus' vantage point from the Crucifix while Mary is to the left. Another Answer: According to my ex-wife women are always right.
