Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: Adoration 9am (following mass) Vigil 4pm Sunday: One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from popery to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a chapel. Catholic Emancipation was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the Mass on the first Friday of each month or by appt. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are heard after mass on the weekdays or on Sunday half hour before mass time. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8th grade or above. They must have completed the 8th grade religious education class and optimally the 7th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. QUINCEANERAS St. Michael the Archangel Parish does not have Quinceaneras at this time. Baptism Class There will be no baptism class in October. The next class for parents and God parents will be held November 10th, please call the parish office for more information or to register. 3 A dog is a man s best friend? Yes, well, maybe not. While we get quite attached to our pets and other animal friends, it is other persons who are our real friends. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. The best marriages, according to studies, are ones in which the husband and wife view each other as equals and share equally in the running of the home and the family. Tasks and decisions are shared, and there is agreement on the raising of children and they always have each other s back when the little ones like to push their buttons. If Daddy says no ask Mommy. Oh no! You don t get away with that trick, little one! Couples who have been married many years, have seen their children grow up and have seen their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, are often seen happily conversing and holding hands in their nursing homes or other residences. It s that lifelong respect for the other that keeps a marriage happy, despite the occasional disagreement. Respect is key. If this respect is missing, especially from the beginning, perhaps a true marriage did not exist. This is a mystery we deal with in sincere prayer. All have one origin We hear in the Letter to the Hebrews that Christ is made one with us in his suffering He for a little while was made lower than the angels, that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them brothers [and sisters]. We are all made in the image of God, and therefore are one in Christ. We sometimes forget that Christ is our brother as well as our Lord. The love he has for us is faithful and never ending. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. For God made them male and female, equal in love and respect for one another. Let the children come to me Jesus love extends not only to adults. It extends not only to those in loving and respectful marriages, but extends to all people, especially children big and little. The disciples tried to prevent parents from bringing their children to Jesus for a blessing. Jesus rebuked the disciples and said, Let the children come to me... for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. His teachings always emphasized humility and trust, and he held up these children as the best examples. Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Children are by nature curious and humble; they know that they are small and depend on their parents for everything. Likewise, we must be humble and recognize that we are small before God and depend on God for everything in our lives that is good. To have this attitude is to look for the kingdom of God and to be ready to enter it. And, like the children, we will be touched and blessed by Jesus and welcomed into his arms. We have vocations to the single life; we have vocation of widowhood, we have vocation of marriage, we have vocation of parenthood, we have vocation of the priesthood and religious, all these vocations working in the Body of Christ. Our vocation is our way to salvation. A vocation is the way we are going to follow Christ and to know who Christ is. Our vocation is our cross. Fr. Branson There has been over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. However, we have great trust in God s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The Church has consistently taught that every human life is precious and worthy of protection. In April of 2018 Pope Francis wrote Our defense of the innocent unborn needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at the stake is the dignity of a human life which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development. The essence of our identity is that we are created in God's image and likeness and loved by Him. Nothing can diminish the priceless worth of any human life. Every person is cherished. Every Life is Worth Living Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life. Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy. 6 Safe Environment Safe Environment class is required by the Diocese of Tucson. All volunteers are required to attend a class before they begin to volunteer. The class lasts about 30 minutes. The next class is after the 10:00 Mass, Sunday, October 14. All new volunteers are required to register online at the diocese website. Directions are given at the class. This is considered the low clearance level. This class is to be renewed every three years. Volunteers who work with children, vulnerable adults, money, or the public need to have high clearance level. The steps for high clearance are: 1. Attend the safe environment class. 2. Register on the diocese website. 3. If you have a DPS fingerprint card, a copy of the front and back of the card needs to be given to the parish. 4. If you do not have a DPS card, you will need to have your fingerprints taken. This can be done at the rectory or at the sheriff s office. We are trying to arrange a time to have the prints taken after the weekend Masses on one weekend. 5.
