Typically, "Great Lent" has a bit of a prelude. On "Meaare Sunday" the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the enre period of Great Lent. A week later, "Cheesefare Sunday" has dairy on the menu for the last me unl Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially called "Sunday of Forgiveness." the church gathers for "Forgiveness Vespers." The faithful idenfy with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God's forgiveness. The desire to set aside all bierness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliaon in the family and with one's neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transion into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season. How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradion. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some tradions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasng is not permied on the Sabbath or the Lord's Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat migated, and wine and oil are allowed. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are offered one-half hour before all Masses, or anytime upon request. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8 th grade or above. They must have completed the 8 th grade religious education class and optimally the 7 th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. They have been working very hard, doing a great job completing their homework assignments, attending the Sacrament classes, and even kneeling during the Communion Rite. Plus, they are not as nervous bringing up the Offertory gifts as when they first started. Please help your child or children work on their First Holy Communion banners, please be sure they are dry before turning them in. 6 Easy and No Cost Ways You Can Help Our Parish Building Projects St. Michael the Archangel Parish, San Tan Valley, Arizona 1 Support or volunteer at the Parish Rummage Sale on March 12th. It will be held on the church property, 7 a.m. to 1:00. Contact: Sue B. at Sign up for the FRY S Community Rewards Program and make St. Michael the Archangel Parish the reward recipient. (Last year we received more than $2000 with an average of 77 families participating per month.) 3 Share our parish s Go fund me site on your Facebook page. Ask your neighbors, friends and family to be church builders and make a small or large donation to build the first Catholic Church in San Tan Valley. 4 U.S. Winter Visitors: take the Angelic Book Fund Raising Project home with you for a project that will generate profits for both your home parish and St. Michael s. Profit is $5 per book. Call the Parish Office for information. (We have the rights for the U.S. distribution ) Or: Join the committee to spread the book sales to other parishes. Every book sold brings our parish the distributor s share. 5 Bring another family to Mass in our new building to grow our parish. Right now we a very tight on seating, but the new building will have room and chairs!
